Rendering 4k 100% hdd usage, low cpu utilization

michas wrote on 11/29/2018, 10:47 AM

Hello,

Can't figure it out why Vegas takes hours(5 or more) to render 4 minute 4k video... I'm using Vegas Pro 15 on PC (win 8.1, intel xeon 4 cores 8 threads, 16gb ram, gpu with cuda, 2xhdd 7200rpm). Project media are on HDD2, vegas installed on HDD1. When it starts rendering it shows remaining time ~1.5h(cpu utilization up to 100%), then after 1 or 2 minutes, remaining time starts to grow and HDD1(!?) usage reach constant 100% while cpu utilization max. ~20%. Ram usage is 100%(16gb) too, although in Vegas preferences it is set at max. 12gb. Strange thing is that Vegas use 100% of HDD1 and maybe up to 10% of HDD2 where the project media files are.

Tried enable/disable gpu acceleration.

Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Where is your render-to location and we also need this under B

If your thoughput via write-to hard drive is at 100%, that sounds like your bottleneck. The CPU can only work on what it is able to offload.

If the drive you are rendering to is a mechanical drive with little space or heavily fragmented, it can be the cause of a such problem too.

I too had an issue with disk usage at 100%. It is my render drive (an SSD) and is attached via USB 3. It resulted in my Razer Blade Synapse software switching the power management of my rig to balanced from high performance. I uninstalled the Synapse software and my power settings haven't changed since. Balanced power setting causes some system resources to act up for some reason. It may not be your issue, but it was mine.

@j-v tried both locations - HDD1 and HDD2. Changed Vegas temp folder location too. Still no effect at all :)

@zdogg it is the bottleneck indeed becaouse if i render short fragment (7 sec) it's going smoothly (high cpu and ram usage) up to 90%, then PC almost stop responding for a minute or two and you can hear drive working hard, but why is it? It's sata 3 drive, ~250gb free disc space, estimated file size after render is about 600mb, the 7 second fragment i mentioned above is 22mb... And all of the media files are on the other HDD (so is the Vegas temporary folder)

@OldSmoke the drive has ~25% free space and it's optimized once a week by windows default settings

@j.razz thanks for reply but i don't think it could be caused by bad power management in my case :)

"Can't figure it out why Vegas takes hours(5 or more) to render 4 minute 4k video"

You've told us nothing about:

  1. Your source media
  2. Your render template
  3. Your rendered video type
  4. The core clock speed of your Xeon processor
  5. What aspect of your hard drive is running 100%, SATA channel speed, etc.
  6. Why you think this is an I/O problem and not a CPU problem

Here's what my system looks like when I render 100 Mbps XAVC UHD source to the Mainconcept AVC/AAC Internet 4K (2160p) template.

What is you VP15 build?

This might be an issue if you have not enough room on your system drive: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/need-help-finding-a-way-to-change-a-preference--111547/

The good thing -- it should be fixed in the latest VP15 build 416.

You can try to use task manager to find out where VP is writing data.

100% ram usage probably means swapping is active. Is swap on HDD1? Task manager may be able to tell you something about swapping.
