[Request] Auto Ripple icon near to the cursor

Sirio wrote on 1/6/2017, 4:52 AM

Hello

Many people get problems using the wonderful function called Auto-ripple, because you never know if it is active or not and many times you have to make a lot of useless undo! 😬
Solution:
It could be more helpful if the small icon of the Auto-Ripple will appear near to the cursor when is active. Here an illustration:

What do you think about?

How about making the cursor change into just that little icon on the right when it's in the edge-dragging zone?

Sirio wrote on 1/6/2017, 7:32 AM

Yes, good idea, then until you are not clicking on a event, the cursor stay normal an clean, but when you fly over or click on an event, appear near to the cursor the small icon of Auto-ripple to remember you that is active.

Uhmmm... Well, cursor is a thingy that comes from OS, with all it's pleasures & wonders.
Should Vegas drill that deep?

(🙂 I think I would vote for "don't mess with O.S.!"
Purely for stability reasons, of course.)

An idea of a marking next to the cursor looks promising.

That auto ripple thing has plagued me the most on wasting time for years undoing stuff because I forgot it was on.

You would think the fix would be very simple and easy to correct. But what do I know.

How about just having Auto Ripple defaulted to off and all tracks out of the box. Ctrl+L is your friend, only use your friend when you need something.

Sirio wrote on 1/6/2017, 8:38 AM

Nick, something like this?

Jam_One wrote on 1/6/2017, 9:17 AM

👆 This looks great!

Nick, something like this?

Good, but I was imagining totally dropping the arrow and turning it into a ripple icon when it's in the zone where you can drag an edge.

I'm sure I've seen context-sensitive cursors in other software. Not sure which though.

Sirio wrote on 1/6/2017, 9:37 AM

Yes, many software can do this, by eg: Inkscape. Changing the tool, the cursor changes too.
Vegas it-self can do that by selecting the tools "Envelope, Selection and Zoom Edit Tool"

I very much like Sirio's suggestion.

Just as an alternative, I was already thinking that changing the position of the ripple icon on the timeline toolbar and changing the timeline toolbar color to red when ripple is active might also do the trick:

I use ripple a lot, and with its current position on the tollbar, it is all too easy to inadvertently click on the adjacent icons.  Isolating the ripple icon would largely overcome this I think.

Come to think of it, this (or something like it) could be combined with Sirio's suggestion to make the ripple process more apparent and effective than it currently is.

Hello

If you want move the ripple icon on the timeline toolbar more on the right an separate it from the others, you can already do that by yourself in the menu: Options > Customize Timeline Toolbar... And there, you bring down the Auto Ripple icon and separate it with a lot of "Separators" lines.

Dexcon wrote on 1/7/2017, 5:56 AM

Thank you, Sirio.  That worked very nicely.

EDIT:  Wouldn't it be better if the ripple icon was isolated from the other icons by default without having to rearrange the toolbar in order to avoid an otherwise avoidable problem?

Well, after some more thoughts and after looking into Corel Draw I do agree with that idea - to change cursor to a "tool".
Where should I sign the Petition? 😄😄😄

...changing the timeline toolbar color to red when ripple is active might also do the trick:

It's a good idea but I think it's too overbearing for that whole bar to be pink if you tend to leave ripple selected a lot. But it would be great to have a feature to turn some important buttons like this into a stand-out colour when selected.

Nice tip! Just put mine on the end with a separator (of course one could insert a load more separators):

Proposition:

Hey, programmers from VEGAS, what do you think about?

vittorio-c wrote on 1/10/2017, 5:09 PM

Yes Sirio Auto-ripple need an upgrade, I got many problems for that function

Sirio wrote on 1/19/2017, 9:31 AM

Hi guys, I updated the situations when the cursor needs the auto ripple complement.

Sirio wrote on 8/9/2018, 1:52 AM

I hope that in the new 16 edition of Vegas they solve this problem. Is so boring, I am even upset that a so frustrating problem is still not be solved.
Please do something.

sched wrote on 8/9/2018, 5:38 AM

Yes please. It's so frustrating. Everytime that I meet this problem, I scream bad words. :/

Sirio wrote on 3/27/2019, 7:50 AM

Still not updates about this problem. I don't understand why Vegas programmers don't care about that. Probably they never edit videos in their life???

Do you think it is professional and reasonable and mature to resort to hurling insults when you don't get your way?

Is it perhaps possible that others simply don't agree with you?

gary-rebholz wrote on 3/27/2019, 10:26 AM

@Sirio,

I don't understand why Vegas programmers don't care about that.

It's not a matter of whether we (the VEGAS Creative Software team) care or don't care. Nor is it a matter of our level of experience as editors ourselves. We are very aware of this issue, and are paying attention to your suggestions. What it is a matter of is priorities.

Certainly this seems like such an easy thing to address that I understand why users get frustrated when we don't address it. It is my job to weigh everything we need to accomplish and prioritize the work. Trust me, I wish I could address every issue instantly, but that's not possible.

This "easy-to-fix" issue would likely take longer than you think it would, and every day a developer works on this, he or she is not working on something else that someone else finds to be the most important thing to them. That's where my juggling act comes in. Please don't blame the developers. Blame me if you're unhappy about this or anything else. The developers do great work. If there is a mistake in the prioritization of that work, that is my mistake and my responsibility.

I hear what you are all saying, and I understand the issue. I would like to solve it as soon as we can. Unfortunately, I don't know when that will be. I hope you understand..

Wait...

So you guys AREN'T doing anything but sitting around the office waiting for something to do???

Mind B-L-O-W-N (cue dynamite SFX)!!!

*sarcasm*

Note to self (everyone else please look away -- the note that follows is a reminder for mine eyes only): Figure out a clever, kick-booty signature that suggests I'm completely aware of how to properly and exhaustively party on and that I, in fact, engage in said act on a frequent and spontaneous basis. All joking aside, listing my computer's properties is a futile endeavor. I edit multimedia in a local television station newsroom that has Vegas Pro installed on several machines with widely varied specs. We began editing non-linearly with Pinnacle Studio Version 8. That didn't last long before we upgraded to Vegas Video Version 4, then to Vegas Pro 10.

There is absolutely none insult in my post. I think you have visions or you prefer read what you think and not what is written.
