[Request] Auto Ripple icon near to the cursor

Thank you Gary-rebholz, I know that making a software like this is more complicate than a Boing 747. And I know that with all the news formats and tons of requests there is a lot of to do. I post my request because in the work-flow it is a problem that appear tens and tens time per day and when it appears, is always frustrating. It is more important than changing some icons or add stabiliser, when the old one was working yet well. 😏 You know what I mean.
By the way, I am faithful to Vegas since the version 8.

Kinvermark wrote on 3/27/2019, 12:07 PM

...Vegas programmers don't care about that. Probably they never edit videos in their life???

@Sirio

Nope. You wrote it. And now you go further by suggesting I have "visions." I will let you off the hook as a cultural misunderstanding, but please be aware that this does not pass as polite conversation.

Hi all,
I just bought the 20 version of Vegas Pro because all the interesting enhancements, but unfortunately there is still not some visual help close to the cursor to show me when the Auto-ripple is active or not.
I am sorry to insist on this point, but I consider it important and ergonomic.

... but I consider it important ...

I couldn't agree more. When working on a very long project, my heart sinks in frustration ("Where's the nearest light pole to bash my head against?") when I do something like delete an event without realising that Auto Ripple is activated thus causing all sorts of unnecessary and unwanted problems on the timeline. Undo can sometimes take forever to complete and often ends up with a white screen (aka crash) a few edits after Undo works. The alternative is to immediately close Vegas Pro without saving and on re-opening redo any edits made prior to the Auto Ripple disaster - unless those prior edits have luckily been saved by an 'autosave' backup.

Ha!
I can't remember the number of times I wanted to start a thread called "what is your most dreaded and catastrophy prone function in Vegas?"
The cursing! The horror! The hair pulling! The banging fists on the desk ( or worse...the keyboard)! The "nooooooos" audible up to my neighbour's house when accidentally leaving auto ripple on during a delete or move or whatnot or when some of its not so logical behaviours messed up the hyper complex and carefully crafted super synched multi track timeline ...

😁
Well, I guess all I want to say is yes, as useful and brilliant as it is, there needs to be a better solution for the handling of the ripple functions, and also some overhauls of its behaviour.
Might I suggest something in the lines of flashing skulls in every corner of the screen?

This has been an very very old request...and in fact it is one of the oldest feature requests in our database right now. Gary and I are talking this over and will consider a couple of different options to try to improve this part of the user experience.

👍👍 or change its color... so you know the auto-ripple is still on.

Nope. In the unlikely case that we were to do another VP19 update, it would contain only critical bug fixes.

For what it's worth this is my solution. I find that in addition to Auto-Ripple I use 'Ignore Event Grouping' extensively and these two cause me to frequently have to undo my errors.
Keyboard shortcut for Ignore grouping is Ctrl-shift-U and Auto-Ripple is Ctrl-L and I dont find these convenient. Ten years or more ago I was using Movie Studio which doesnt have the option to redefine the shortcut keys. So I wrote a program to intercept OS keyboard codes on their way to any window with 'Movie Studio' in the title (Vegas now) and redefine just the numeric keypad keys to some of my most used functions. I use a second USB numeric pad with labels stuck on the keys. A small always-on-top window shows the status of these functions, and also the status of the Selection Tool mode, (though these do change the cursor).

I still use it with VP20. So I would say that what is needed is much more visible status indicators. The tiny toolbar buttons with their even smaller icons really dont cut it. As you can see I also have isolated these buttons with lots of seperators!
How about a floating resizable on-top status indicator panel with these and other functions?

That is a very good suggestion - maybe it could be an undocked Vegas window (menu View/Window) which can be placed and sized where the editor wants it, and clearly highlighted when Ripple is activated such as filled with bright red or a user-selected colour. Even better, that window only ever appears when Ripple is activated when any of the Ripple 'on' options have been activated. I don't think that I would want a Ripple warning window appearing all the time - when Ripple is off - because that would just be more visual pollution on the screen. Only as an obvious alert when Ripple is on.

How such a window should look is going to need some flexibilty. A user-selectable colour would be essential because it will depend on your way of working and what you need to warned about. I see Ripple ON as a good thing, hence my indicator is red for ripple off. I dont see it as something which needs a warning as such, I just want a very clear indication of status

Yes! And while they're at it, they can make a pop up warning for me for when I'm in Pan/Crop; "You're not at the beginning of the clip, did you really want to insert a key frame?" 😏

Good news:
There is a good step ahead on the update 326 of VEGAS Pro 20.
Called "Indicator of active Auto Ripple Edit mode". Now when the Auto Ripple mode is activated, the scrub vertical line blinks in red and cyan instead of white and black and the border of the event selected becomes red.
