"Swap Video Files" option when rendering

Jessariah67 wrote on 8/5/2020, 9:00 AM

Does this need to be checked if we are using Vegas-created proxies (that auto play on Draft/Preview)? I just started using the proxies feature built-in to Vegas, and was under the impression that it automatically uses the original files when rendering. Is the "swap" option in the render window drop-down referring to something else?

Thanks for any help.

… and you are right.

The swap process is completely automatic. Also, proxies are only used when the preview quality is set to "preview" or "draft". "good" and "best" will show your original media.

Thanks, guys. That's what I thought - on both counts. Just kinda threw me when I saw that "unchecked" option in the render window dropdown. Maybe it is associated with a script extension - kinda like SEMW has the check box to override the muted FX bus associated with their Original/PC/TV preview feature.

The swap function in the Render dialog is intended to be used in conjunction with the Swap Video Files option in the Project Media pane.
In the traditional proxy workflow, this sort of swapping is done automatically.

VEGAS has 2 different proxy workflows: automatic (sfvp0 files) and manual (user replaces media files using Swap options as Derek pointed out)

Hi! Today I saw excatly the same. And I am curious. I read your answers but still can't get what are you talking about. Can you explain why is this function exists available to check?

Swap video files exists so you can make your own proxy files if you want, then use "swap video files" to swap them in and out of your project. Doing this method requires you to not only swap out your files, but to swap them back with your original media before you render, or your render will be the same lower quality as your manually-created proxy files are.

If you use VEGAS' built in proxy creation tool "create video proxy", VEGAS automatically swaps out the proxies (which are only available when you have "Preview (full)" or lower preview quality set in the preview monitor) whenever you go to render with the original media files, you do not have to swap them out yourself.

Hi Frosty.

I replaced files with my own proxy many times. Long ago. I did this even in the early versions of the program, which did not have the automatic proxy creation function.

Only I still don't understand. How does the program know what files I want to replace them with?

A very long time ago I replaced them manually before the final rendering. Each one individually. For example, I clicked 60 times on each event to be replaced.

What's the difference now?

Vegas proxies are based on the original media and that media is used for the render.

@Uytkownik-Vegasa The swap function points to a folder where all your manually-made proxies are located. Those files all have to be named identically to the original files. Once you point the swap to the new folder, all the media gets swapped in one swoop.

@Howard-Vigorita - I understand what you wrote. But that is an instruction about "how to swap files" while working on project. But What about that field to ckeck in render menu?

But when you swapped your files via "swap" option while montaging, they are swapped.

Maybe that options is Re-swiping them (to the original), render from original files?
