V16 hangs when building peaks

peterh337 wrote on 12/28/2018, 1:31 PM

It does it every time on this particular file.

It is a 4K 60fps file, from the new DJI Osmo Pocket stabilised camera.

So I tried it with V14 (having deleted the .sfk files) and that hangs at the same point (16% in) on the same file.

Both progs have to be killed with Task Manager.

The file plays fine with VLC, which shows this media info:

Does anyone have any ideas on how to salvage this situation?

  • Try VideoReDo Quick Stream Fix.
  • Re-encode the problem file in Handbrake or FFMPEG.
  • Demux the video from the audio

If only that file from the camera fails in the same place every time, and those methods don't fix it, it may be a goner. Do you actually need the audio?

Better to give the MediaInfo of that file than what VLC says about it, or share it here on a cloud service.

Where do I find the media info?

Yes I could try to pass it through handbrake...

Also I am not sure how to strip the audio off, since Vegas hangs at that point and is not usable. I guess there are loads of tools for this sort of thing...

VLC plays the audio just fine.

The file is 4GB so I can't easily share it. My dropbox account is not big enough.

What I am happy to do is put that mp4 on a DVD and airmail it to somebody who wants to fix the bug in Vegas :)

I will pass it through handbrake overnight and will report tomorrow.

You don't have to give that whole file, but say 10 or 15 seconds of that mp4.
To split that part of your original file you can use MP4 joiner/splitter, a small free app.

I put it through handbrake using the best settings I could find which would do the least to the file but it made it about 1/5 of the original size and it now doesn't play in VLC (the image has gone nearly dark).

So I am trying something else in handbrake... I have set the x264 preset to "placebo" and it is now saying it will take 3hrs to do this file.

The hanging of Vegas happens at the 16% point so a lot further than 10-15 seconds.

OK, that you did not tell before.
When this is one of other files that don't have that problem you can try to cut off the first 20% with maybe a problem, and try again for the remaining part.

Hi Peter,

Have you tried loading this source media into Vegas with 'video only'? Right click and hold on clip, drag to a track, release, select 'Video Only', then 'Add Video Across Time'. If that works, you could then strip the audio off and mux it out a a wav file using various converters.

Here are some other options that you might be able to use: mega.nz, wetransfer.com, mediafire.com, Google Drive, One Drive.

If you can share the original file, we can link the developers to it, as well as look at solutions. The original file would be much more useful than a trimmed/rewrapped file.

Great tip about the dropping onto the track without the sound track getting analysed!

Anyway, the second go with handbrake did work. Still produced a 1/4 size file (which is not what I really want; why shoot in 4K to start with?) but it plays with VLC this time, and doesn't cause Vegas to hang.. However I used the no sound track trick instead to get that mp4 into Vegas.

I have uploaded it to mega.nz

https://mega.nz/#!hK4SCITT!80mLGN1Z90hYapHesad8Xth3aFWkxUrk-UBnJPmofQI

The free account is likely to get pulled if more than a few people download it, so I will remove it fairly soon.

j-v wrote on 12/29/2018, 3:33 AM

I downloaded your file and saw the same problem with me, freezing at 16%

There is somewhere around the 56th second a problem with the audio, because when I cut with MP4splitter 10 seconds out between 50 sec and 1 minute the 2 remaining files play nice in VPro 16. When you can narrow down the place of the problem to maybe less than a second you can use the rest normal in Vegas Pro.

If it plays okay in VLC you could try exporting the audio to a file then use that on the timeline with the video, and not use the clip audio. This saves re-rendering in Handbrake.

peterh337 wrote on 12/29/2018, 3:45 AM

Sure; multiple ways around this. In this case the sound track is rubbish anyway, but I posted this to highlight what is possibly a Vegas bug. Or, alternatively, an issue with the DJI camera, and this will become more important in the future as they sell more of them. It is a really good stabilised camera which will probably sell pretty well.

NickHope wrote on 12/29/2018, 10:36 AM

I'm also hearing audio distortion (crackling/drop-outs) starting at about 55s in VLC and MPC-HC. But they do continue playing through it. So I think it's fundamentally a camera problem but ideally Vegas could be more tolerant of this type of error.

I tried to press "Cancel" at the bottom left of the screen to cancel the peaks building but I can't press it quickly enough.

j-v wrote on 12/29/2018, 11:23 AM

I opened that file in Magix Soundforge Audio Studio 12,6.
No problem to play and edit the audio.
I only did a "normalize" for the audio and than saved that mp4 again.
Afterwards it loaded and played without any problem in Vegas Pro 16.
Look

Yes; clearly, putting the file through any video or audio editor removes the bit of data which crashes Vegas.

Please let me know when you have forwarded the file to Vegas programmers, so I can delete it.

@peterh337, does this happened on every Osmo Pocket clips of yours, or just this one?

If just this one, looks like this one is 'badly-recorded-file'.

I have seen it only on this one.

The thing which is of more concern is that Vegas just basically crashes when it gets to that point, and obviously it isn't supposed to do that. It should pop up a box saying "unrecognised audio" with an option to skip next x seconds or whatever.

Having a situation where the program has hung and you cannot save your work so far is not good. You could lose a lot of work.

set wrote on 12/31/2018, 10:31 AM

The developers have successfully downloaded the sample file, and will try fix the issue, and prevent Vegas Pro from this crash, so you can safely delete the file on Mega.nz. Thanks!
