V21 constant and increasing crashes with XAVCS 4k

Mindmatter wrote on 11/5/2023, 9:36 AM

Hi all

I'm working on a 2 hour long interview with 2 cams shot in 422 10 bit 4k XAVCS for file size, from a Sony FX3 and a Sony A7mk4.

Each track has color fast 2 and Vegas color curves. The 2 audio tracks have Izotope declip and voice denoise, but both are off during the edit.The preview speed is abysmal, I need to work in "draft auto" for it not to stutter or completely stand still at times. V21 would sometimes all of a sudden drop to 3 fps and then slowly catch up to 25fps again, for no apparant reason, just during playback of an uncut long event.

V21 used to crash occasionally in this project but today, while working on the second 60 minutes, it started to crash increasingly often, and now it crashes after 1 minute of working. It's basically become unusable.

If anyone has a workaround or solution for me, I'd be more than grateful.

Thanks!

It's its hevc 4:2:2, like some fx3 test footage I have, and you have no recent model Intel igpu, make sure legacy-hevc is unchecked. And maybe try setting decoding gpu in i/o to off since Nvidia can't decode that anyway. Should stop the crashes but might not make editing any smoother... if that's the only remaining issue, make proxies.

Thanks for chiming in, but their XAVCs is not HECV, only Sony's XAVC HS is. Their XAVCS is nomal H264.

You probably already checked but MediaInfo would shed more light on what's going on with that clip.

I did a couple of total PC restarts, and that seems to help for some time. Looks like something in that project with that codec is accumulating over time and then bugs Vegas out. I can't see anything unusual in the media info.

You could try adding

<general Format="XAVC" />

to C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 21.0\so4_blacklist_vp15.xml. Details at the bottom of the first post at https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/blacklist-for-so4-includes-fix-for-gopro-dji-xiaomi-yi-avc-lag--111716/.

@Mindmatter How about posting a short sample of the clip on a cloud drive instead? Shooting a few seconds with the same camera with the same settings is enough. Utilities like ffmpeg and others can snip off a few seconds to use as a sample if the footage is from a camera you don't have. A clip sample will reveal structural details with tools you may not have.

If it really is something in the project, include the project itself together with short samples of all the different varieties of media used. It there are 100 clips from the same camera, 1 clip-sample is enough. The only thing not easily simulated are 3rd party plugins... but if you disable or remove them from your project and the problem goes away, you then have your answer.

@Howard-Vigorita here's a 50fps version , don't have 24fps for FX3 https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/3ngawlspagj4roruczx9o/C0107.MP4?rlkey=mhfdipnicvhqe63tv18cwm0qk&dl=0

Can you share the MediaInfo?

I just download the clip from Todd-AO and here is the MediaInfo:

It's double-rate Avc in an mp4. But it's 4:2:2, 10-bit, with pcm audio which are technically not legal for avc in an mp4. Those are usually put into an mxf container. I think Vegas would handle it like an mxf ... I see mxf handling is listed as getting improved in the update next week so maybe this content will benefit from that. Otherwise you might be better off transcoding to 4:2:0 8-bit and maybe throwing it into a mov container to preserve the pcm audio.

I also checked the gop structure. Max is set to 48 which is more than I prefer but should not be a problem.

Been playing with Todd-AO's clip and not seeing any problems in either vp20 or vp21. Exploded it with a concatenator up to 1 hr 39 min and it's still good. My laptop has difficulty holding the 50 fps but it's pretty close. If I drop the project rate down to 25 it's rock steady. Don't see any decoding on the igpu but transcoding to 4:2:0 changed that... couldn't do it with ffmpeg which disallows pcm in an mp4 but it took it into a mov. But was able to get it into an mp4 by changing the audio to aac.
