.VEG file blackened

michel-plante wrote on 3/20/2022, 6:55 AM

Hi,

I'm having many problems with my recent purchase of Vegas Pro 19. When reading the issues reported on the Forum here, I don't find many unhappy users of Vegas Pro 19. I'm thinking of going back to my faithful & reliable VP16. What brings me here today? I had to make a few corrections/modifications on an actual finished mp4 project, So I installed it on a time line and saved it as a normal .veg file and started to wortk on it adding only images.  I saved it on my working D:/ drive and also on my two external F:/ & G:/ drives. I never save on one drive only now, Experience and nasty errors will teach you that.

I then go back to my .veg file and I start a render process to find out that nothing is appearing in my preview window...hum! Weird. I sart clicking here and there on my timeline to see that everything is black. I cannot see any pieces of that hour fifteen minute .veg file except what I had just added manually? I don't get it. Did I lose this project? By chance, I recover it by going to the backup I made of that .veg file on one of my external drives. I can see that complete  file without any problems...why? What happened to the original file? Why is it all blackened? Can I recuperate that file and if so, how?

I've been working with Vegas since version 6, never experienced an issue like that?

Help would be more than welcome...thanks.

For your info. I'M using VP 19 build 532, purchased a little more than a month ago.

Windows 10 64 Bit

AMD Ryzen 5 1600

So to understand you, you opened a project made in Vegas Pro 16 in Vegas 19?

"actual finished mp4 project, So I installed it on a time line and saved it as a normal .veg file" is hard to understand.

If the VP 16 project still opens in 16, you could try cutting and pasting the timeline to 19 and then paste in the images as well from your corrupted 19 project?

If this is just one of many issues with 19, give resetting a try and clear out any settings held over from previous versions that may cause issues: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Also go to help/driver update and update any graphics drivers (unclear what GPU you have).

Saving .veg files to multiple drives or copy/pasting them to another drive is a really good thing to do.

There have been quite a lot of changes with how Vegas Pro treats some media between VP16 and VP19, so it would be really good if you could provide the information requested in https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/ including a detailed MediaInfo report as per point C.1. Also, what are the settings in Options/Preferences/File I/O (tab) and Deprecated Features (tab)?

This is my first time on this Forum. I'm not to familiar with the terms used to answer a comment or reply made by another user on my issue. I do hope RogerS that you will be able to read this answer to your recent comment.

For starters I wrote that I'm having many issues with my recent purchase of Vegas Pro 19 that is the reason why I'm thinking of going back to my faithful & reliable VP16. I'm not saying that I'm using VP 16 nor that I loaded a project made with VP 16. Later on you write: and saved it as a normal .veg file" is hard to understand. The default extension for a project file in Vegas Pro is ''.veg'' if I'm not mistaken?

Nothing is or was made using VP 16 but only and exclusively with VG 19. My graphics drivers are ok and I'm using a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3g. graphics card.

Now RogerS I probably at this instant found a part of this problem. I explain. I have on my task bar two dormant files of my project, For the sake of understanding, I'll call it ''Mike123.veg'' file that was saved on my D:/ drive as written on my original message on this Forum about an hour ago. So that specific file is the one that is balckened or if you prefer, the one that is the issue for which I'm writing here today.

I have also another dormant file on my taskbar that is IDENTICAL to the one saved on my D:/ drive, it was saved on my F:/ drive as was a completly OK file until a few moments ago why, I'll explain again? While writing this response to you, I had to refer to my F:/ .veg file, the one that is ok. So I clicked on the Vegas icon on my task bar and naturally VP 19 opened with the file on the timeline and a dialog box appeared, and I checked on something pertaining to the location of the pictures/images, I think, and BANG the project, the whole timeline in fact, was blackened?

Now I have another identical file stored on my G:/ drive. I'll resave it a couple of times with different names and test that dialog box to see what happens.

I hope Roger that you better understand this issue. Luckilly, I have those backups or else I would have to RESTASRT a major Project that I took a long time to complete.

Thanks

Michel

Hi RogerS,

This is simply to complement my previous message, I made a screen shot of the dialogue box which has nothing to do with images as I wrote previously, It appeared so fast, I checked ''ignore this and all subsequent errors'' and my timeline blackened. I never had messages like this in my previous versions of Vegas. Si I click on it fast without paying attention to its content not actually undersanding what in fact is this error message?

Also, I attached one mp4 file 1-...this file shows the blackened timeline with the manually added images .I wanted to add two files but it looks like I cannot? At least you can see what I'm talking about.

Dexcon, you are asking a lot of info. I presume this is for the actual issue and future ones? I'll have to print your request and take the time to answer it.

Thank you

@michel-plante

  • With all the copying of project and media files around, be diligent about locating the files in the different locations so Vegas 19 knows where that are.

  • Convert your .mp3 files to .wav and replace them in the project folder.
michel-plante wrote on 3/20/2022, 10:23 AM

Hi John,

Is this a new approach? ALL my sound/music files are of the .mp3 format. I have another follow up to the file that presents an issue, Volume 2 if you prefer and all those files are .mp3 that represent at this point no problems?

Does VP19 prefer the use of another sound format?

Thanks

Michel

Hi John,

To complement my previous answer John, that same dialogue box is asking me to specify a replacement file for many of my .veg files saved on my PC. I will usually get that box when I load a .veg file but never while working on a specific project. To your knowledge is this something new with VG19?

Thanks

Michel

john_dennis wrote on 3/20/2022, 11:34 AM

@michel-plante

"Is this a new approach?"

There have been bug reports in Vegas versions since 16 RE: .mp3. I made the recommendation as a diagnostic technique to eliminate the annoyance of the message that your screenshot describes about .mp3.

The format is commonly used and Vegas will likely continue to support it.

"ALL my sound/music files are of the .mp3 format."

Some podcasts of spoken word that I listen to are .mp3 at the discretion of the provider. None of the music that I listen to are .mp3 in spite of my degraded hearing. That's a technical choice that I made in the 1990s.

" ...that same dialogue box is asking me to specify a replacement file for many of my .veg files saved on my PC."

That dialog box is asking you to specify the location for your media files. Not veg files.

michel-plante wrote on 3/20/2022, 1:21 PM

Yes John, you're right on that, i meant of the content of my old .veg files. Being french speaking, you might find errors like that once in a while.

" ...that same dialogue box is asking me to specify a replacement file for many of my .veg files saved on my PC."

@michel-plante Did you then tell Vegas where to find the media files that it needed to load the project?

RogerS wrote on 3/20/2022, 10:20 PM

To reply to the earlier message- yes, it appears the blackout is due to Vegas not being able to find the media anymore due to the project changing locations The box you checked to ignore errors means Vegas stopped looking. Now you need to do with Eric and John said and help Vegas find the missing media. That should solve your issue.

Yes, I get the impression it's maybe as simple as that.

michel-plante wrote on 3/21/2022, 7:32 AM

Hi,

Thanks for your input and help in trying to resolve my issue.

I started to use Sony Vegas Movie Studio6 in 2005 and changed from SMS wen purchasing Vegas Pro16 about three years ago. I was more than happy with this change and I had a made a good deal when purchasing it. I never really had any glitches or bugs with the app. I bought VP19 a few weeks ago and was very motivated with this recent version of Vegas hoping to get even better bells and whistles.

I’m less than happy and I’ll come back on the issues I’m having with VG19 in an future post. I’m frustrated with this latest version of Vegas that I might go back to version 16.

Now back no my present issue. When I started to use Vegas in those days, if I recall, I would get as soon as I would open a saved program, a box that was asking me where to find missing media.(Screen shot…number 1) I would think ''why is it asking me for that?'' I didn’t move or displace my images or clips? So I would give it the path to prevent that message from showing again. With time, I would check the last item of the box ‘’ignore all missing files…’’ and I never had any issues because I had checked that item.

Now with VP19,  I’m getting an extra box when opening a dormant file or project if you prefer. Like I mentioned previously when I open a dormant file or project, I’m getting that error box (screen shot included, number 2) I click on the last item of the box and it becomes blackened but not all the items of the project. Some items were added manually and are kept as is. I explain: as I mentioned in a previous message yesterday, on this Forum, I said that I installed an .mp4 project on the timeline to finish it with added images. So that project was then saved as a .veg file and that was the file that was being blackened.

That same box is asking me to also consider medias from previous projects. What? I’ll have to correct that also in case I might open an old project and get it blackened again? It’s not that simple.

But that’s not enough. I found out yesterday after creating a loop on my project that the timeline became black. I rendered it to find out on the preview pane that I could see the first 7 seconds on the project being rendered and after the project became black for the rest of the render process. Hum! So I rendered the same project without the loop. It was ok for the first 18 minutes and became black for the rest of the 77 minute project.

Now please read this it’s more than unusual, I wanted to make a screen shot of what I wrote at the end of the previous paragraph. I imported that .mpg project  on the timeline and BANG it became all black!!! Impossible to make a screen shot…MAN!

Never had a crazy issue like this in the past. I’m completely out of means to resolve this.

Thank you

Michel

Okay, I'll assume that for any files that are missing you have already told Vegas where to find them.
For files that you found but refuse to play in Vegas, try the .wav conversion suggestion from John for a few of them and see if it helps.

For why things could become a black screen (assuming no files are missing), it's possible the 3GB video card is running out of memory as Vegas 18+ requires 4GB? As a test try turning it off in preferences/video and see if it helps.

michel-plante wrote on 3/21/2022, 8:16 AM

Hi Roger,

Yes I'll try the .wav format. But the problem is not exclusively related to trhe sound files.

Now for the GPU acceleration I have never used my graphics card in the treatment of media on my projects or the rendering process. I found during the years that the GPU acceleration was a conflict creator (crash problems, frozen screen, etc) more than a plus, I don't find that Vegas fixed that issue during the years and for that reason that option is always OFF.

Thanks fopr that input Roger

Michel

RogerS wrote on 3/21/2022, 8:25 AM

In Vegas 19 the GPU is in a few places. Preferences/video and preferences/ file io.

Vegas actually has addressed many of the issues with GPUs introduced with the new decoder in Vegas 15, but if the card is unsupported you may run into problems.

Also, you didn't mention if you had reset Vegas. At this point I think I would reset Vegas and test your project again. If it doesn't work turn off the GPU in both Preferences/video and preferences/ file io and try again. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Also, it's a little hard to follow your description. Project = .veg file. MPG (mp4, etc.) = rendered video. File could be either the project or media. Dormant=? previous project?

michel-plante wrote on 3/21/2022, 9:09 AM

Hi Roger,

My VG19 was resetted many times since I bought it with no valuable results. As I mention the GPU is not an issue because it is always OFF.

There is no mix up with the names or extensions or if you prefer for my projects. I much prefer making projects with the mp4 extension for quality reasons. Also 80% of my projects are made for my family i.e. my kids and their families; they prefer to have them on a DVD, hense the .mpg format. So when a project is finished they receive the same project on the .mp4 format and on a DVD (.mpg). They chose on what media to watch them.

Now what is dormant? I think I mentioned that I was french speaking. I don't now how to translate or to name the fact that a file and/or project is situated on the Task Bar. That happens after clicking on the short line in the upper right corner of any app. just left of the little square and X.

Voilà.

Michel
