VEGAS 18.0 - CONSTANT CRASHING - ONGOING PROBLEM ACCROSS ALL VERSIONS

Brendon wrote on 9/30/2020, 2:12 PM

Ever since Vegas 12 and upgrading to first Vegas 15...then 17...and now 18...I have had the same problem...crashing as I simply playback standard non high definition video within Vegas - there are also other crashing problems - freezing during rendering...and on and on. I am pissed and I have had enough.

It worsens the bigger the project gets. I have a 90 minute project and it is continuous.

I7 7700 laptop.

32GB ram

1TB M.2 SSD

1TB Samsung SSHD

Nvidia GE Force 1060

I have changed out memory. I have changed out the SSD.

I have upgraded drivers - Vegas versions - Windows updates.

I had the same problem on my old Metabox I7 2015 quad core intel.

I am waiting to receive my RP AMD 4800H laptop - 32GB ram etc...

Question is...how much more of this horse puckey do I have to put up with Magix? You're not doing it on purpose...how much more money do I spend before your software works longer than a month before the next problem? Am I being demanding? Unrealistic?

I LITERALLY save after EVERY tiny change. I am in a constant state of anxiety - Magic - how long?

As it locks up I kill it via Taskmanager and there is no report sent.

I'm running VP 17-452 and it almost never crashes on me since disabling so4compoundplug.dll.

Also...

A driver cleaning http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

If you're using an Nvidia GPU make sure you're using the studio driver, not the game driver.  I've also found that the 451.48 driver is much more stable with VP than previous versions

Trim your project looking for fx combinations that cause problems.  For example, Picture in Picture and Layer Dimensionality together are lethal on my machine

Disable so4compoundplug.dll if videos are AVC https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/avc-xavc-s-issues-in-vp15-16-try-disabling-so4compoundplug-dll--108345/

Make sure your cache folder is clean by deleting everything in  C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\<version #> (delete everything with VP closed and use task manager to make sure it's really gone from memory). The initial startup will be kind of long after this cleaning but once it's up, restart VP again. Use task manager to make sure VP is completely gone from memory before starting it back up.

Many thanks for the prompt response.

My needs are simple - HD1080p - occasional 60fps - YT downloads. Occasional effect...green screen. Green Screens off YT were particularly bad, but it is ALL to do with the length of the project. The crashing is in direct proportion to the size of the project.

I will try it all and get back to you.

Again, many thanks for the response.

I tried the tips first...I have Vegas 18 and when I press Shift at the options stage...nothing happens? :-) Same old options menu.

I have upgraded drivers - Vegas versions - Windows updates.

Which Windows version?
Which driver for GPU Nvidia 1060 following Help of VPro 18?
Which driver for GPU Intel 6300 following Help of VPro 18?
Which most type of sourcefiles (MediaInfo )
Which most used projectsettings?
Further my advice to you for VPro18:
1. Install latest build nr.334
2. After that installation do a full reset exactly following this advice: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/
3, Do not change settings for Preferences/Internal, Preferences/Video and Preferences/File I/O.
Than try to go to normally work on a new project

In VPro 18 that goes another way: Push Shift at choosing Options and it appears as latest option.
But don't use it in the latest build of Pro 18 because thats not needed anymore.

Many thanks. I cleared cache. Got into the internal preferences and wow...big change...preview running much smoother. Again, many thanks to you both for the prompt reply. It made my day. Now I am happy and will not hurl my laptop across the room :-)

OK...spoke to soon. Dragged video and audio into time line. Dragged the footage to make it shorter and instant crash...I will carry out some more things and then make a full report of all details. Vegas will not make a report either when crashing. It always used to.

j-v wrote on 9/30/2020, 3:33 PM

I told you already in the latest build of VPro 18 not to change settings after the install what you did and for sure not at Internal.

But probably you will not use or follow questions or good advice, so go on your own way, I'm out at this questions of you

Brendon, something you always have installed on your system (driver, antivirus, a particular software, system config. etc) is probably whats conflicting with Vegas and always causing a crash. Wish i could be a bit more specific as i don't have your system in front of me.....

I dont know. I just know when Sony had VP, I never had a problem. Then I went to Vegas 15 under Magix and it has been hell on earth ever since with no reprieve. If the hardware upgrade does not work I am going to have to dump vegas for good as I am sick of it. It ALWAYS centers around the length of the project. Its hits 1 hour plus and the crashing begins. The longer it gets - the worse it gets - Older laptop and this 2 year old laptop. Changed all the internals I can. I have friends with Premiere and they simply do not have these problems.

If I get the same problem then it is a Magix problem.

Many thanks.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 9/30/2020, 4:20 PM

Well, not sure what else i could suggest to you. I have been thru all versions of Vegas, from Vegas 4 under Sony's umbrella right up to Vegas Pro 18 from Magix's, and never any major issues or crashing problems. Surprisingly Vegas is a lot better now under Magix, but that's another story!

I understand your frustration, but please refrain from calling fellow users derogatory names. Why not install a fresh copy of Vegas Pro 18 alone (nothing else) on this new laptop you will soon be getting. And see what happens... Best of luck!

My laptop is almost identical to yours and I also had a bad experience with 15. 18 is stable though, so don't give up

Please post Mediainfo for your video files.

If I get the same problem then it is a Magix problem.

There are also many users here who have little or no problems with crashes or freezes (including me since Vegas Pro 11 under Sony to Vegas Pro 18 under Magix)

As was often found in other threads, this is mostly related to personal settings on the PC (and these are to be looked for, and there is great - and voluntary work done here in the forum) and not with the video editing software itself.
The Vegas team tests the software on various computers before delivery and there are also beta testers - but I think it's impossible to try out all the thousands of configurations.
Except - we switch to "standard PC".
