Vegas 5 : Tell us what you need

Comments

Alright - I'm echoing much of what's here...but as a daily Vegas user I thought I should weigh in:

Buss to buss for mixing
ability to group and hide tracks
Punch I/O on the fly
Optional playback meters on each track
Customizable keyboard shortcuts
Mute channel mutes fx sends to buss
Control surface support
grouping fade envelopes
better method for cleaning old takes off the hard drive

By the way, thanks for asking us.

I like what Rob's having also.
As days go on, I keep remembering things I've asked for in the past. I'm actually surprised I haven't seen this one in this post yet...or maybe I just missed it, it is a bit lengthy now.

Addendum2:
12. Multiple Wave editor capability.

I think this is a good feature, especially for those of you who preferred "Direct mode" editing within Sound Forge. This way you could have the best of both worlds if you're a Sound Forge v5.0 and v7.0 owner. I would actually like to have an unlimited amount of editors you could choose from. I would then have SFv5.0, v7.0, CoolEdit Pro, and Wavelab. Doubt I would ever use them all, but there's always ONE tool in each app that the other doesn't have.

I agree. If there's one thing that's perfect about Vegas, it's the interface.

"Tell us what you need" -Please don't change the interface!

More track colors to choose from. I know it sound silly, but it would be a handy addition, maybe even a color palette, the range at the moment is annoying, the colors get too similar, i would like to differentiate my tracks easier.

- Vegas and Acid cross support. I don't know exactly how this would work, but somehow intergrating the looping tools of Acid into Vegas would be great. Or else just enabling Acid projects to be opened in Vegas, and vice-versa.

- VSTi and DXi and VST FX support

- Ability to choose between two or three sound editors like in Acid

- Group tracks into folders, more options for arranging tracks, like in Macromedia Flash.

- When I "remove from project and delete files" from media pool, also delete associated sfk file.

- Midi support, but not exactly like acid, I find the piano roll too clunky. Something more akin to Fruity loops, or Cubase would be ideal.

- Playlist from which I can swith between alternate arrangents of my project easily

- Ability to group all media files used in the project into a specified folder.

- A very handy feature would be when I move the event snap offset, the even would then loop using that position of the flag. Also the event snap offset should be positionable not only at the beggining of the event, but also the end.

- Bus to Bus Routing

- I agree with whoever else said this, the apply non real-time FX feature is too weird at the moment. A more usefull way of implementing this would be to be able to render the real time FX on a track, to which ever events are selected on that track.
stakeoutstudios wrote on 10/10/2003, 7:26 AM
the event effects method whould be the same as should be the same as when you apply effects to a video event, non-destructive.

Then an additional freeze control could fix the FX to free resources.

I often need to apply FX to only a tiny section.

I might as well put my .02 in...

a "hide all envelopes" quick key, which, when re-pressed, would restore the last view.

I'll fight to the death for improvements in the chainer and preset system. Here's what I would like:

1) I would like to be able to have a directory tree in the Plugin Packages that I can customize. i.e. a folder of preset packages per client. This should, of course, have drag-n-drop capability

2) MOST IMPORTANT: I would like the chainer in all your programs to remember the chain you've loaded unconditionally!
This means: I load a chain, I change a plugin's settings or shuffle plugins around or delete or add, it should KEEP the name of the chain in the header of the Chainer.
Just put a * next to it to show it's been modified. I want to know I was using a chain and what its name is/was.
Then I want a simple option to either: save current changes to the chain or save as something else.

3) Same as # 2 but with indiviudal plugins' presets. So often when I working and I make adjustments to a plugin's parameters, I'll see that the preset's name has changed to "untitled".
I NEVER want to see that unless I either didn't load a preset or didn't save one.
Otherwise, it should always show the name of the preset being used and an indication of whether it's been modified or not.
Basically, you would call a file "untitled" if it was changed, so I expect a preset's name to behave the same way. Same with chains.

4) if I try to load a chain or preset when I've got one loaded that's modified, it should ask if I want to save changes.

I'd like lockable markers and regions.

I'd like lockable track heights, so that when I adjust overall track heights with ctrl-shift-arrow, it does not affect the heights of those that are locked.

add event or sequence of events as a media pool object or "scene".

Save and Copy to assignable file formats

allow for recognition of new file extension of all files when opening a project and pointing to a a new file type with the same name as the file it's looking for.
i.e. "Found the file 'game.pca' in the folder xxx. Would you like Vegas to point all files of type .wav to this new file type?"

Save and copy/trim media should save the media files in their proper folders according to media bin name.
That would be very helpful if I wanted to save the project and just grab the SFX, for instance. Or maybe there should be an Export Bin as Media files feature.

Bus to Bus routing

keyframe style plugin automation

a way to insert envelope points for plugin automation envelopes from the UI when selecting the "default" preset -
i.e. even when there's no change to make so that it's easier to set up a section of automation with no morphing - hard edge changes from one preset to another and then back

VU meters

Take count #'s in the event

Fix soloing so that solo=solo, even when pre-fader fx exist on other tracks

pitch envelopes

auto input

control surface

change in grouping functionality - select a group and try to move it to another track should move all events in the group.
I hate having to select all events in the group first OR Internal preference ‘Event Group Selection = True’ behaviour to be a ‘public’ option.

Ability to drag and drop FX chains from one track/bus to another. I.e. Grab a Track FX button, and drop it onto another track FX button to copy FX chains from one track to the other.

focus to event selected in Event List Detail

ability to drop markers on the fly in the video capture tool and a better system for marking dropped frames.

the ability to see marker and region names in the events on the timeline

here's my list of wants in a somewhat order of preference:

- complete routing system - and that means being able to route not only between busses but also inputs and outputs, so that you could route, for instance:
from one track to a bus then to another track or
from input to a bus then to a track

- mono busses (with pan controls!)

- automatic plugin delay compensation in complete signal path (like in Samplitude 7, Nuendo 2 and Sonar 3)

- "master bypass" parameter in the parameter list of all automatable plugins

- optional meters for audio tracks and busses with option for different modes (peak, RMS, pre-fader, post-fader and post inserts)

- ability to mute single events (like in Pro Tools)

- big "console-lookalike" mix window with ability to hide/show tracks, busses, sends, inserts or just anything you want / ability to view it in "full screen"

- ability to consolidate various events in one (this is called "consolidate event" in Pro Tools)

- ability to group tracks and busses (not events)

- ability to name each group (a way to view the groups, like a group window with a list of the groups would be essential)

- ability to suspend (bypass) grouping both individually or globally (a bypass button for each group and one master bypass button that would affect all groups)

- ability to link track grouping to event grouping - in Pro Tools (and Logic, I guess) when you create a track group you are asked if you want it to affect the "mixing", the "editing" or both - but I feel that having an on/off button for this "linking" next to each group would be a better approach)

- ability to choose what properties you want to be active for each particular group like:
mixing: routing, inserts, sends, solo, mute, pan, level, track height and so on..
editing: fades, volume envelopes, splits, offline processing and so on..

- ability to show/hide tracks and busses

- ability to activate/deactivate tracks and busses (like in Pro Tools)

- ability to import tracks (like in Pro Tools) with properties to choose from (audio files, inserts,..)

- ability to import more than one track at once

- ability to drag and drop FX chains from one track/bus to another

- solo clear button (will turn all soloed tracks off, like in Pro Tools)

- mute clear button

- punch-in/out on the fly (like Pro Tools' quickpunch)

- real input monitoring reactive to punching in

- ability to use sine, triangle, square and random presets for drawing automation envelopes that would snap to grid spacing value

- also to have a pencil tool that you could draw automation envelopes freely

- ability to thin the number of automation points in an automation envelope, with different degrees of thinning to choose from

- ability to record all kinds of automation in real time via mouse with different recording modes (read, write, latch, touch,..)

- Mono toggle on stereo tracks and master

- Dotted note values for the Grid

- automation of bus sends and fx sends mutes

- ability to view more than one plugin at a time

- event time stamping relative to start time

- user-definable keyboard shortcuts

- time-stretching tool (like in Pro Tools, Nuendo,..)

- offline (non-realtime) processing for individual events like reverse, volume, invert (flip), dc offset and so on (like Pro Tools AudioSuite plugins)

- volume and pan controls on the "audio bus tracks" view (arrange view)

- ability to resize and reorder buses and FX on the little mixer window

- tempo maps with ability for different tempos and different time signatures with a metronome that will follow it

- different note values (including dotted and triplets) for the metronome, instead of having it play only stardard quarter notes

- automation (like a metronome map) for these optional metronome note values

- VST Plugin support, or a proper integrated shell/adapter for it

- sidechains support for plugins

- CPU and HD usage meters

- sync points for events (like in Pro Tools)

- option to set sync points for all cloned events

- MIDI

- VST and DX isntruments

- Rewire support

- ACID style loop tracks (I know how completely different is the way Acid works with all the looping/lenght calculations and such but it would be so cool if you ever manage to make it work within Vegas... or.. at least maybe like an Acid plugin (like Sonar's Cyclone) or as Acid being slaved/rewired to Vegas)

- realtime FX for single event (like in Samplitude)

- multiple timelines showing various formats at once

- better plugin/preset/fx chain management

- tab to transients function (like in Pro Tools)

- memorizable zoom settings

- POW-r dithering (like in Logic and Samplitude)

- an integrated production calculator would be nice (with tap tempo)

- dual processor optimization

- "pre/post insert" option for track sends (not just pre/post fader)

- equivalent of Digidesign's SoundReplacer/Wavemachine Labs' Drumagog but better.. these are still not accurate nor versatile/dynamic enough

- equivalent of Synchro Arts' VocALign

ah!! ..and now things that I can live without:

- assignable FX (what is the deal with these? does it make any sense?)

- video!!!!

thanks a lot for caring!

1. Ability to do different edits (especially insert edit) from trimmer (i.e. do away with overlapping video on a single track, as it is redundant to placing video on a new track above the current one). Post-edit ripple works, but it's cumbersome. It would be nice to be able to do this via dragging to the timeline (perhaps by holding down a key) and via a keyboard shortcut (for example one could insert the event on the active track at the playhead's position).

2. Nestable timelines/sequences within a single project file - Probably already requested ad nauseum. Hopefully y'all see the usefulness of this feature.

3. Subclips - Would be great to see regions as subclips in the media bin.

4. More intuitive velocity controls (with audio!) - It would be so much simpler to be able to change the velocity of the event and see the event's size/duration change based on it's new speed, as opposed to more or less of the selected media being shown based on the event's velocity. Why? it doesn't make sense that one needs to re-trim an event after changing its velocity as the event was most likely already trimmed before being placed on the timeline (i.e. the video in the clip is pretty much what the editor wants to show regardless of its velocity). Most definitely it was trimmed before adding the velocity envelope.

5. Actual Slip,Slide,Ripple, and Roll edit tools - not necessary as keyboard allows these tools, but sometimes it would just be simpler to select the specific edit tool you want to use and change events without continually holding down a key.

6. All modes of Scrubbing with Audio - JKL scrubbing is all good, but what about frame by frame movements? When you get right down to it, one frame makes a difference, so hearing audio feedback while using the arrow keys would be very helpful. Also audio feedback when dragging the playhead around the timeline would be incredibly useful.

7. Scrub via dragging playhead WITHOUT creating a selection - perhaps this can be done by dragging the playhead with your mouse being in a certain area of the timeline (perhaps above the time indicators).

8. Customizable keyboard shortcuts

9. Keyboard shortcut to view entire timeline - good for keyboard users. As the only way to currently do this is zoom out incrementally (via mouse or keyboard) or double click the horizontal scroll bar for the timeline.

10. Option to allow arrow keys to move frame-by-frame regardless of zoom level - when I'm using the arrow keys, it's because I want to see the smallest bit of change in the video. For video, that's frames. I don't want to have to be at a specific zoom level to do view my video frame-by-frame. ( I know Alt+left/right arrow does this, so give us customizable keyboard shortcuts and I'll change it myself)

Thanks for listening!

More than fitting a particular style of working, what I really need, as a producer, is to get as good as it gets in terms of Sound Quality.

So, as I'm currently working only in 24 bit, 88.2 KHz resolution for that reason, It would be VERY NICE if Vegas guys could get some sort of plug-in from Apogee (the UV22 HR dither), like the guys of cubase did.
cuartodeluna wrote on 10/16/2003, 3:44 PM
In a professional production environment, what you need is not only have a nice way of recording, editing or mixing down. You need that your software helps you keep things as organized as possible.

For example, if you´re working within a team (or even by yourself), is a nice and simple feature to have a little button in each track to make some comments (text comments), so every one in the team knows basic things like what were you planning on doing in the final mix with that specific track, or, for example, who was the musician that recorded that track (even including phone number :) ), when it was recorded, how much studio time was used, which engineer worked on it, etc, which may help a lot in the administration of the project and the whole facility. Of course, if would be very helpful an option for global comments too, like schedule (when is the project supposed to be delivered), producer, artist, overall cost and price, client, and keep track of the time used in that particular project (studio time) and all the related costs. Of course, you can do all this in other applications, but all this happens within the studio, and most people don´t want to walk from there to an office just to take note of all this, or write everything down and then loose the paper.

The time count, of course, could be automatic (as an option).

This is an habit that lead to success to programmers worldwide: Document your projects!

You can go even further! You could have a basic scheduling option, so the program even reminds you when are you supposed to record guitars, vocals, drums, etc, and when are you supposed to deliver your project!

All we know that most users of DAW's are musicians which usually have their heads in the outer space. This would help them a lot not to loose jobs, or clients. Don´t you think?

Whithin the same thinking line, it would be VERY NICE if you could assign a folder for the recorded audio, not just in a per-project basis, but in a per-track basis, so you can have a more organized folder structure. For example, within the project folder, you could have an audio files folder, and inside it, a bass folder, a lead vocal folder, a nylon guitars folder, etc.

This last thing could lead to an even BETTER thing: what if some of those folders are not in the hard discs within the same computer but in computers AROUND THE NETWORK?

If you're working in a team, in a professional facility with more than one studio, this would mean that you could record different tracks of the same project in different studios ... even at the same time! (of course, if the program can update the project automatically when something changed and somebody pressed "save")

Just an idea.

Hope you think about it.

;)

One of the most important things when you mixdown a project is the reference.

The best thing you can do if you want to be really shure that your mix is going to work anywhere is to have more than one reference, which means more than one set of speakers, which means more than one master.

It would be very nice if you could have more than one main output (mirrorred and simultaneous), so you can solo, or mute, any combination of them automatically, for that purpose.

You could say, of course, that this is currently possible just by changing the output interface setting in the master, but what if you want to listen to more than one pair at the same time?

I think Vegas users could benefit greatly with enhanced project management features.

This not only includes afforementioned INTERNAL features (multiple timelines, etc.), but also EXTERNAL features.

When creating new project, a folder (perhaps in a user-designated 'projects' directory) for the project should be created. Within that folder, there could be capture, render, audio, etc. folders. This allows users to keep different files specific to a project separate from other projects. I already do this, but it's cumbersome to have to do this for every project and would be a beneficial addition to the Vegas workflow. (Any FCP users (and possibly other NLEs) will know that I'm taking a page out of FCP's workflow. I don't think that's so bad if it improves workflow efficiency!)

Also, another internal enhancement would be to allow users to take media files offline (i.e. delete them from the disk) from within the project (perhaps the media bin) without their corresponding events on the timeline disappearing (but rather just denote that the media file for the event is currently offline). One could always directly delete the file from within Windows, but I firmly believe that it is much more efficient (not to mention safer) to deal with operations specific to a project WITHIN that project.

Much better titling, especially the user interface (Title Dekko is much closer to what is needed). Include 3D effects for titles

Project "auditing" tool that will catch inadvertent "nudges" of controls like opacity and levels that can cause needless re-rendering of cuts-only clips.

Input AC3 to audio track.

Direct re-import and edit of VOBs from DVDs that I previously authored and burned.

Search for all instances of particular fX.

Paste Event Attributes should replace existing attributes instead of add to existing attributes.

Noise reduction filters for analog (VHS tape) sources, both chroma and temporal and spatial. These exist for VirtualDub, but cannot be used in Vegas with Satish's PluginPac because they operate over more than one frame.

Integration with motion stabilization software such as 2d3's Steadymove or Dynapel's Steadyhand (steadymove looks like it may be the better of the two, although I have only used Steadyhand). Premiere has this feature.

Advanced slow motion features. The motion estimation algorithms used for MPEG encoding can be used to predictively create intermediate frames. You should be able to create fantastic slow motion using these algorithms. Note that posts in your forums about slow motion are among the most frequent.

Smarter use of pre-rendered video. If I pre-render, when I do the final render, it appears as though none of the pre-renders are used.

Camera pre-roll when doing Print directly to tape (from within Vegas). Without this feature, I cannot do "frame accurate" (almost) insert to my tape, whereas if I render and then print to tape from the capture utility, it uses the delay information to queue the start of the sequence at the correct moment.

It has been said that good audio is 60% of good video.
I'd like to see some mastering tools - something along the lines of a multiband compressor that would "automatically" punch up and provide levels close to a finshed master, or along the lines of some of the hi-end tools that you would find in a mastering studio.

A text track would be extremely useful. Where a person could have the lyrics written out underneath the vocal waveform, or add rem type messages directly underneath a bunch of guitar takes etc.

With the advent of non-PC based DVD recorders, I would like to see Vegas 5 support editing MPEG2+AC3 directly. These recorders make it easy to copy old video (home movies, for example) directly to DVD+-R, but they put the audio in AC3. It would be great to be able to take these DVDs and easily edit them without having to convert to other fomats. Vegas 4 can do all that except the AC3 part.

I believe that as stand alone DVD recorders become more common, it will become something more people will have, and then want to edit those DVDs. We aren't all making copy of commercial DVD movies - there are legitimate reasons to have this capability.
