Vegas and iPhone video performance - strange

terje-bergesen wrote on 2/19/2018, 3:43 PM

So, my computer is
Hexacore lots of HZ, 32G of memory, graphics card is a nVidia 1060.

Vegas Video Preview is Preview Quarter (tried Auto etc)
Timeline is 59.94fps 1080p (also tried 60fps)

Footage is
iPhone 6, AVC, 1080p 60fps

Drop footage on Vegas time line, start editing. Using J-K-L keys. Start playing. Hit L key to speed up. Footage stutters, shows every 10-30th frame or so, mostly like a still picture slide show with a new image every half second. Abysmal.

Drop footage on Premiere Pro CC timeline, playback is smooth, hit L key once, twice, three times, footage is smooth. No problems.

Move footage to Mid 2015 Macbook Pro, Quad Core 16G of memory. Same as with Premiere. Footage plays smooth no issues navigating etc.

So, for iPhone video - Vegas is a no-go. Good thing most of my footage is not iPhone footage. Let's try something else.

Take UHD footage from my Sony A7RII and drop it on a new Vegas timeline. Playback is smooth, L-key once, twice, three times, no problems. Everything still smooth. So, Vegas editing of 4K video is not an issue (as of yet anyway) but 1080p 60fps from an iPhone 6 is a no-go? Isn't that a tad counter-intuitive? Obviously, this can be fixed by transcoding the iPhone footage to something more editable, but that's a royal pain in the rear end too.

Anyone have some tips for easy way to transcode? Also, any ideas on how to make the editing of iPhone footage less like pulling teeth without pain management?

Don't use iPhone and problem solved. It's an overpriced toy anyway.

For me, Vegas 15 works fine. Pre-Vegas 15 stinks. I'm running a Radeon card if that makes a difference.

I sometimes use iPhone and Android video because I get the video from others who happen to be standing where I’m not. I really don't care how much they pay for their toys.

I managed to squeeze this out in Vegas Pro 13-453. iPhone video is on the right.

We don't even know what version of Vegas you are running.

I transcoded a massive amount of iPhone 6 footage to Cineform using Vegasaur in batch mode in Vegas 13. It took a while but you just set it going and leave it to chomp away each night. Then editing the Cineform clips was easy. I have a very limited pc.
