VEGAS Pro 18 - HitFilm Pro integration

NickHope wrote on 8/4/2020, 2:17 AM

Is there intended to be any HitFilm Pro integration in VP18? I have HitFilm Pro 14.3 installed. There are 3 integrations mentioned in the VP18 Help:

  • Adding a HitFilm project to the timeline
    • Works in VP17
    • Not working in VP18
  • "Add HitFilm Effect"
    • Does not appear for me in any version of VEGAS Pro. Perhaps it only worked with earlier versions of HitFilm Pro. There's still a known issue listed for it that I would like to remove if it's no longer relevant.
  • "Edit in HitFilm"
    • Works in VP17.
    • Not available in VP18

Nothing is mentioned in the VP release notes about these features being removed. So they're either missing or the help needs to be updated.

Same here - I have no HitFilm integration with VP18 whereas there is in VP17. And opening an existing project veg file in VP18, the missing media dialogue box came up re an .hfp file. Manually linking it didn't get rid of the missing media box on subsequent openings of the project.

When VP15 was released, much the same thing occurred. The answer I got from FXHome Support at the time was:

HitFilm Pro supports integration with Vegas 15. As soon as Magix update Vegas 15 to support it as well, the integration will work. It just requires a small update on Magix' end, which we expect will be coming soon.

The next VP15 update resolved the issue.

Also, HitFilm 15 is due out very probably this week, so if the integration lies with HitFilm rather than Vegas Pro, then HF15 might be the resolution. But somehow I think that it's a Vegas pro issue.

Both adding a HitFilm Pro project file into the VP18 timeline and sending a clip from the VP18 timeline to HitFilm Pro via the "Edit in HitFilm" command works fine here.

I'll check later for further infos.

@Marco. What version of HitFilm do you have?

I re-installed HF 14.3 via the Repair option and then rebooted the computer. Unfortunately, it still doesn't appear in VP18.

That's one of the points to consider: Be sure to have HitFilm Pro installed or re-installed after the VP18 installation. Maybe a repair is not enough.

Then, in the Vegas Pro 18 program folder, check the file "HitFilm.fio2007-config". Open this file in an editor. The code of mine says:

[FileIO Plug-Ins]
HitFilmFileIO=C:\Program Files\FXHOME\HitFilm Pro\HitFilmFileIOPlugin.dll
[HitFilmFileIO]
Reader={64B02917-4AB0-44A0-AADD-F99AB16A62C4}
{64B02917-4AB0-44A0-AADD-F99AB16A62C4}=1

My HitFilm Pro version is 14.3.9931.38452.

Thank you @Marco. Copying C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 17.0\HitFilm.fio2007-config to C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 18.0\ did the trick, without reinstalling HitFilm Pro. The contents of my HitFilm.fio2007-config are the same as yours.

So what about this "Add HitFilm Effect" issue? Anyone got any insights on that?

Marco. wrote on 8/4/2020, 5:33 AM

I don't know what "Add HitFilm Effect" means. Is this a script feature?

NickHope wrote on 8/4/2020, 5:40 AM

@Marco. It's referred to in this issue, which I'd like to remove from the Known Issues list if it's no longer relevant: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/add-hitfilm-effect-crashes-vp15-when-applying-to-empty-event--109640/

Dexcon wrote on 8/4/2020, 5:43 AM

@Marco.  ... Thanks for the suggestion. A complete uninstall and re-install didn't fix it, but coincidentally I did the same copy/paste of the config file from 17 to 18 as NickHope just commented on - and it nows works.

@NickHope  ... I just checked VP16, and instead of "Edit in HitFilm" when R clicking the video event, it appeared as "Add HitFilm Effect". Clicking on the latter went to HF in exactly the same way as occurs with "Edit in HitFilm" in VP18. Oddly, when closing HitFilm and R clicking the same video event in VP16, instead of appearing as "Add ..." the HF link had changed to "Edit ...".

I suspect that "Edit in HitFilm" is just the new name for "Add HitFilm Effect".

Ah, now I got it. Yes, it's what Dexcon says: "Add HitFilm Effect" is same as "Edit in HitFilm", just a different naming.

NickHope wrote on 8/4/2020, 6:56 AM

Thank you. This change must have happened in VP17 Update 1. From the release notes: "Menu options for opening a file in FXhome HitFilm have been consolidated for more understandable presentation".

So the wording in "...choose Add HitFilm Effect from the shortcut menu." in the VP17 and 18 help is out of date. @VEGASDerek

I've followed up the "HitFilm-on-empty-event" issue on the thread for that.

HitFilm Pro 15 has just been released.

First impression - Edit in HitFilm still works in VP18 (using the HitFilm.fio2007-config already copied from VP17 the other day) and HF15 seems to open much, much quicker than occurred with HF14 when using the Edit in HitFilm option.

I reported to support about the issue I am having. If I send file to vegas fx and edit. Then render out and close out vegas fx and go back to vegas pro 18? I have to wait a few minutes then I try to play the new updated file and it stutters and losses frame rates. BUT. If I go and grab the rendered file from Vegas fx on the drive? It plays fantastic. Strange.

Marco. wrote on 8/6/2020, 5:38 PM

Within the usual workflow Vegas Pro doesn't use files rendered by Vegas Effects but it directly uses the Vegas Effects project file. No need to render, just save the project.

I'm late to the party, having just made use of the Black Friday offer for 18 Pro Suite. Anyway, I opened my Hitfilm 15 and a message announced an update to Hitfilm 15.2 with support for Vegas Pro 18 integration. So maybe performing that upgrade will help those who still have issues.

I personally don't really see the need for Hitfilm Pro, as i already have ignite Pro working within VegasPro beautifully, and already using After Effects...... If however you don't use After Effects in your workflow, then, Hitfilm Pro is your next best bet.
