Vegas Pro 20,0 (build 403) crashes/closes after I click "Render as"

exyxnx wrote on 5/6/2023, 1:58 PM

Hi,

This issue started today, when I tried to render a finished video. When I click Render As, the software loads a couple of seconds, and then just exits/crashes.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software multiple times (I also had the startup error, which was solved by going offline, and this error is no more). I have updated all my relevant drivers. I have turned off GPU accelerator. I have a monthly subscription.

My files are not big at all, the project barely has any effects, it's a quite simple thing and I have no clue why it crashes. I have a deadline closing in on me and I am getting desperate to render this video. Anyone have any tips?

Did you already tried to reset the program exactly following this? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Thank you for the quick reply! I have now done it, in fact I did it a couple times with a computer restart in the middle to be sure, did not help. :( Do you have any other recommendations for me?

EDIT: I am pretty new to Vegas, and even newer to debugging it, so I'm grateful for any tips! (if anyone knows of a way to get the video out of the software by some other means that "Render As", I'm also all ears!)

One thing I just remembered: the first time I tried to render today, the settings window popped up, and the software only crashed after I tried to create my own custom parameters for the mp4 video. I named the custom "size" 75% (because I reduced the amount of pixels in the width by 75%). Could that be the problem? The naming of the custom setup including a "%" sign? (But j-v's solution, and all the un- and reinstallations I have done today would have solved that, wouldn't have they?)

Can you provide a screenshot of the rendertemplate you choose to do the render, like such one?

I cannot get this window to pop up. The software exits before it appears.

The % thing I described above was the only time I got to this window. I chose custom template, did a change in the width, and named it "75%". It then crashed, and since then, when I click Render As, Vegas crashes before this window pops up.

The only thing left for me is thinking you did not this at point 5 during the factory reset: Place a checkmark next to "Delete all cached application data" and then click "Yes".

I did, more, than 3 times :( still, I am grateful for your tips and guidance!

One thing is that I clicked on a shortcut, not the .exe file itself. Could that have hindered the clearing of the cache?

And this is the last thing I see. I click Render As, 3 seconds go by, and the software exits.

My deadline to submit this is today, I am really desperate :(

Ok I have this happening over here also. This is what works for me

I don't know if it will work for you. But give it a go

First , see the your preview is set to "good half" , not best !!!

Save your edit unter another name you haven't used before

Close Vegas

Open Vegas again hold "control shift" reset the program

Open the new file you saved

Try to run the render now

When I do this the render works again.

Thank you very much for the tips and the help! Wiew, unfortunately your method didn't work for me, but I managed to solve it in the end.

Here is what I did: I uninstalled everything Sony Vegas related, then I cleaned my computer of any and all Vegas related files and folders using this guide. I also cleared out my trashcan and went through the folders one by one in the C: drive and deleted anything VEGAS. (even after the thorough cleaning from the guide, there were still 2 or 3 folders I found...)

Then I restarted my computer, downloaded the installer again, installed the software, activated the license (had to look the key up in my email inbox), started the program with CTRL+SHIFT, opened the newest project file (from Wiew's suggestion), and then rendering worked.

I believe there must have remained some corrupted file somewhere, even after deleting the cached data and uninstalling the software. After this very thorough cleanup of everything I could think of, rendering works again.

Thank you once more for everyone for the help! I was losing my mind here. Kudos!

Apologies, I linked the wrong guide in my comment. This is the guide that I did step by step.

I uninstalled everything Sony Vegas related,

@exyxnx  ... just for future reference, Sony Vegas refers to versions 13 and earlier after which Sony sold Vegas Pro to MAGIX (circa 2016). You say that you are new to Vegas Pro so it would seem unlikely that you'd have Sony Vegas Pro versions from 7+ years ago - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/sony-vegas-vs-vegas--119881/

Nonetheless, I'm glad that the problem has been solved. You've done well in finding the solution.

@exyxnx suggest you leave special characters like % and ! out of names that might end up in a file or folder name. Although newer win api's might support them, some of the code in Vegas goes a long way back and might not.

FWIW, I get this same behavior from time to time.. happening to me right now as a matter of fact.

When this happens, after I hit render-as, after a few seconds Vegas closes (before I can choose format.. the dialog with formats does not appear). If I go back in and try it again, no crash. Sadly, it's repeating the crash now .. was working earlier today. I'm moving to another computer for the night.. need to get this render done! (it's crashed now twice after 3+ hrs at 99% and 100%.. grrr)

@exyxnx I may be barking up the wrong tree but if it was your "strange" render template that was causing the crash there may have been an easy solution. With Vegas closed delete the template. I believe they are stored in C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\VEGAS\Render Templates.
