Really hate to be that killjoy guy...but this is exactly what I was talking about. The same artifacts, messy contours and pixellations as in other AI promised tools that kept me from using them. In super fast moving edits like they are all the rage these days, this sorta works. But on a closer look, it seems more like a badly keyed out green screen with lots of pre blur and softening applied to hide the edge problems. They'll get there eventually, as AI tools get better and better, but IMHO they're not there yet.
Which is why I said that smart mask is going to be your better option for replacing chroma key, and it would still require some manual tweaking... But would still be a hell of a lot faster than doing it manually.
Nothing is ever going to completely remove the need for green screen, there's just no way to get a clean key out without being able to separate the background 100% pixel perfect in all lighting and background conditions. No amount of AI is ever going to overcome that.
However, if all you're trying to do is color grade a person separate from the background, or do some compositing that doesn't require 100% accuracy, this works beautifully.

But after I saw this here, I don't care about anything anymore. I just want this! It took away all thoughts of migrating to other editing software. If one day I was a sad person I don't remember. 😁😁
All right folks, the chains have come off, we can talk about Vegas 21 publicly now.
I have tried the z-depth plugin, and it works great. Especially for color grading. I wouldn't expect it to be a replacement for green screen, there is still some flickering around the edges that is to be expected from this type of a plugin, even resolve has that, but if you're just trying to isolate a person or group of people from the background, you can apply a feather to the edges that hide the flickering, and do a color grade on just that person or people very easily. The effect works quite well actually. Surprisingly well.
Mocha Vegas is something that I have been looking forward to for a very long time. Finally Vegas has a motion tracking solution that is top of the line, industry standard, and it is built right into Vegas. If I remember correctly Vegas edit does not come with it, but the other tiers of Vegas Pro do.
Adjustment events also work fantastic, and they enable you to create awesome new custom transitions. When you combine it with the offset and tile plug in and motion blur, forgive me if I forgot the name of that, you can do those really cool trendy zoom effect transitions that look just as good as anything you would get out of after effects or premiere or anything like that.
And most importantly, there have been numerous stability upgrades. I'm able to edit through entire projects now without a single crash. That doesn't mean nobody is ever going to see a crash, all software crashes at some point, but you will notice that those crashes come much fewer and farther between. That said, if any of you do experience one, we want to know about it. The Vegas team has been working extremely hard on squashing every one of those bugs and getting the code base strengthened so that they can begin to implement some of the performance improvements that are planned later.
Those of you in the audio world should have some things to get excited about as well when it comes to stability. While I don't use Vegas as a DAW myself, there are people on the beta team who do, and I have not been hearing them complain. Take that for what you will, please give it a try when it launches tomorrow and let us know what you think.
There's still more features that I have not mentioned here, check out the PDF posted above to learn about all of them. And also please remember, these are only the features that are in the initial release build of Vegas 21, more features are going to be released with each update.
So after reading the PDF, now Mocha Vegas will come as a new feature. I suspect that it is more or less the well-known Mocha Hitfilm in Vegas-adapted form and some updating, so not quite the full Mocha version. From my point of view this would be a big step forward, especially since Mocha Hitfilm only worked in the old Hitfilm Express version, but not in the full Hitfilm versions. In addition to the other notable innovations for me an important reason to update.
Yes, it is a limited form of mocha, akin to mocha hit film or mocha after effects... But there are no limitations to its use like the ones you mentioned with hit film. It can still do some fantastic stuff. Definitely a reason to upgrade.
Looks like a very useful upgrade. I personally like focus on bug fixing, and the specific selection of the new features this time. New features are always welcome, but were not always to my personal preference/priority in the past.
I have a feeling I will have use for the event adjustment, and certainly the improved text to speech (I hope "Flemish" Dutch variant is still supported), mocha, and not in the least the depth map. I dabbled a bit with depth map in Resolve, and found it a pity it was not in prior Vegas. I wonder if it could help with creating parallax motion on stills.
I only hope they fixed the annoying audio bug (screech/loud noise or plop) at end of clip or cut which occurs almost guaranteed in every project. It is annoying as you have to listen to the audio and go thru the whole project and where it occurs, you have to drop a few frames to get rid of it (shorten the audio a tiny bit).
Hey, thanks fr0sty for your report. I have some questions.
i'm still runing on a i7-7700 / 1050ti , for healt reason, i can't upgrade yet my computer. despite i have a 10600K behind me, a 12700 one, and a RTX A2000, i unfortunatly can't use them (they all make coilwhine and i'm hearing oversensitive to this). didn't tried yet the 10600K and the motherboard.
so my question is that i hope that even if it's running slow, that i'll be able to use and try this new Depth feature.
other thing is that i didn't understood if the mocha plugin included in vegas 21 will work on his own, or if we must own the Mocha software from boris FX ?
since the stop of developping Ignite Pro by hitfilm (even my licence, and the download of original installer are not present on my account and on hitfilm page :( ) so i'm trying to find a replacement which would not be too much expensive. Redgiant / MAxon are way too much expensive unfortunatly, and BorisFx and Newblue FX as well. I don't want subscription service, but as well due to internet issue, most of the time of the day i'm offline, which forbidd me a lot of things. any possible suggestion ?
I regret that the speech to text feature from vegas can't be available offline, and not included in the Pro version. i'm hearing impaired, and it would have been a real time saver, so i use Whisper instead + vegasur for srt import.
you talk about using Vegas pro as a daw. unless i missed it, there is one fonction that make me a hell of workflow as i'm a musician. i'm working on cubase and sibelius, and there is one thing not present in Vegas. (i'm on vegas 19 Pro). it's the possibility to import a tempo map or a midifile with tempo map / change in it. because of this. it make all sync work a hell. I noticed as well (still on Vegas pro 19) that there is a difference which is worst with time while the video is playing, between timecode generated by Cubase and the one done in Vegas Pro ! I generate video with timecode in cubase, import it in Cubase and, both timecode after a while start to be out of sync of few frames. more the video plays and the sync became even worst. don't know who is at fault. Vegas or Cubase.
don't know if this is fixed or if the tempo map part will be finally available ! because of this, i must do all my sheetmusic sync (i display them on screen in sync with my performance fillmed on video) using keyframe instead of having the sync being automatic. it's ok with static tempo for some tunes, but not on tunes with lot of tempo change. and doing this with hearing issues can be a real challenge !
Hey, thanks fr0sty for your report. do we know yet, when the release will be out ? i have some questions.
@Marty74, it's out NOW - download it and give it a try! You do not need to own anything from Boris to use the new Mocha plugin.
just bought for the first time the post licence (Edu) by curiosity. (was a pro user before 2021, then, noticed i was allowed to Edu lol. so many money lost during all these years lol). Icons changed again lol (Vs 19). will take some months to be used to them lol..
I don't succed to run vegas image and effect, error message asking activation, certainly must wait the Edu approve emaill with official serial number to activate it, and no trial, will play with Pro 21 meanwhile ;).
VP 21 works reasonably well on my Intel i7700HQ/ GTX 1050 GPU though AI-enabled features are fairly slow so I make ram previews (shift + b) to see what it looks like playing back.
