Vegas Pro 21 build 187 - Vegas UI Hangs randomly

dennismf wrote on 11/12/2023, 3:12 AM

I installed build 187 two days ago. I had been using build 108 (well I believe it was 108) and it had been working well on my Intel NUC X15 notebook (Intel 12th gen i7 with 64Gb ram). I was using the Intel ARC A730M for GPU acceleration in my Vegas video settings.

With build 187 Vegas became quite unstable. The Vegas UI would freeze at seemingly random points requiring me to use Task Manager to kill it.

I experimented with the GPU acceleration settings and I have found that the only setting that allows me to work without UI freezing is to turn off all GPU acceleration. I find it freezes using both the ARC GPU and the Intel Iris Xe GPU.

Note that I have not been using any new or special effects when these issues occur. Today I created a simple project with just one event and the UI froze while I was manipulating the event on the timeline.

Turning off the GPU is not really a solution as the rendering process is very slow without using the GPU.

I am hoping that I can find build 108 so that I can return my Vegas install to a usable state.

Any assistance will be gratefully received.

@dennismf Curious if you are selecting the A730M in Video Prefs and the IrisXe in I/O? Do they both show up as selections in both Video Prefs and I/O? If you see both, have you tried reversing them?

Another place to mess with that might influence Vegas are the Windows settings in System/Display/Graphics if you add vp21 there as an app... your 2 graphics devices should show up there too, one as the Performance gpu (A730M?) and the other as the power saving gpu. The Windows setting seems to control where Vegas puts the Optimal tag in Video Prefs. Selecting the gpu with the Optimal tag in Video Prefs might improve the situation if it moves about after Windows config changes.

I had explicitly selected the ARC GPU in Vegas Pro. That setting did not change when I installed build 187.

I did some more testing with build 187. I found that the UI freeze occurred when I had GPU acceleration enabled. However when GPU acceleration was off, I managed to do some basic event edits but the render process was initially extremely slow and would freeze part way through; also requiring a Task Manager kill.

Thanks Dexcon for the pointer to old versions. I have now installed build 108 and Vegas is behaving correctly again with the ARC GPU enabled.

In the Windows Display Graphics settings, the High Performance ARC GPU is selected. I did not select this myself as I was not aware of this setting until I read the post above. Windows also has Auto HDR selected.

I am using Vegas to edit UHD HLG events using ACES. My notebook has an HD main screen and an attached UHD HDR secondary screen. My project settings are UHD HDR via ACES.

Thanks for the assistance.
