LOL they added pro to the name. Guess we wont be seeing those threads anymore.

If DVDA 4.5 doesnt have next gen authoring, consider it dead.

So whats the dates of IBC?
MarkHolmes wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:01 PM
Lord, how about a little enthusiasm? I personally can't wait to see all they've done... and where do I buy?
farss wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:09 PM
Enthusiasm, for what?
They show up at IBC, a PAL centric event with a product that's always had bugs that affected PAL users, well at least I'll only have to pay for a 0.5 upgrade to DVDA in the hope that they might have finally fixed it.

I agree with Mark. It seems like this forum has turned into a bunch of ungrateful whiners. "If Sony doesn't do (insert feature request here), I'm going to hold my breath until I turn blue."

Vegas 8 is going to be better than Vegas 7, just like 7 was better than 6. Despite its very few limitations, Vegas works better for me than the other two NLEs that I own: Premiere and Avid Media Composer. If Vegas isn't "cutting" it for you, you can simply buy something else and go whine on their forums. (If they allow you to do so.)

John, thank you.
Spot pointed something out recently that we all forget. The team that designs this software is made up of real, hardworking, dedicated people whose sole aim is to improve what is already a phenomenal piece of software. There is a reason we all use it it. Give the guys and girls in Madison a cheer once in awhile...
Coursedesign wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:30 PM
Well, in all likelihood they have had to dump the Video for Windows code to become Vista-compatible, so that alone could lead to major improvements.

Madison was really held back for a long time by this VfW anachronism that was a great choice years back.

It's a big effort to replace it, so naturally they wanted to wait until they also had to rewrite for another reason, and that arrived with Vista and 64-bit both.

It's called "Vegas 8" to signify that it is no longer 8-bit :O).
p@mast3rs wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:36 PM
Reading back over the pr blurb, it looks like the exact same blurb they used for Vegas 7. I for one hope I am wrong in my skepticism but I really dont see any new features other than the stuff that has been requested in the forum.

Maybe we will finally get native multicam, better titling support, and something like Smoothcam/Deshaker.

Guess we will see soon enough.
Laurence wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:38 PM
The main things I want out of Vegas 8 are for the two black frame thing to be cleared up and for it to stop constantly crashing on native m2t clips. A new titler and some GPU acceleration would be nice as well. Does that make me a whiner?
p@mast3rs wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:44 PM
Laurence, those should be point fixes, not new features. Those are bugs that no doubt we will be forced to upgrade to have fixed. Starting to feel like Adobe support.
GlennChan wrote on 8/12/2007, 1:50 PM
p@mast3rs... I can see why you would roll your eyes at tacking on "Pro" to the end of the name (much like Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro). But there's a good reason for it, since it differentiates Vegas Pro from Vegas Movie Studio.

Well, if we got that I'd be evangelizing it worldwide.

They couldn't put a feature like high-bit support in the pre-announcement, because everybody else already has it.
p@mast3rs wrote on 8/12/2007, 2:13 PM
Glenn, the reason why I rolled my eyes at was because we have had so many threads here about the Vegas name and how many people said to add Pro to it so that it can compete with Final Cut and Premiere and even Avid Xpress.

Guess they finally got their wish and now we all can be "pros"
TheHappyFriar wrote on 8/12/2007, 2:58 PM
hmm.... DVDA 4.5... could it be assumed there's no major changes, just an update for modern burners because it's a new release? I'd also assume since it's a .5 it would only work with DVD'a & no HD DVD or BD discs (assuming, imho that would be a big enough reason to add "1" to the number).

Also they said "Sony AVCHD format". Does this mean they don't plan on supporting other company's AVCHD format's? I don't own or use HD but I would prefer if Vegas was non-camera fixed in HD codec's. That's why I got it in the first place & don't plan on buying a Sony camera if it's a lot more $$ then a competitors camera when I do go HD. And yes, I assume the current version of Vegas I own would be the last one when I purchase it, that's why I don't upgrade every time a new one comes out. I wait to see how it works.
rextilleon wrote on 8/12/2007, 5:58 PM
Get over it. Vegas has essentially lost the race---there only concern now it to support their cheaper HDV cameras and fit their market nitch. Having said that, for most of us, Vegas is excellent in editing DV and varieties of HDV. I'm not buying another editor, no reason too. I have to much money invested in Vegas.

By the way, I have the utmost respect for the programmers out there in Wisconsin. I have nothing but disdain for the Sony executives who have the uncanny ability to mess up most every thing they touch.

Or maybe it's a move to remove confusion between Vegas Movie Studio and the professional version of Vegas. Moreover, Vegas was originally called "Vegas Pro" and the word "Pro" was dropped when the audio-only product was dropped.
Or, perhaps they wanted to allow some time to separate the old Vegas Pro from the new Vegas Pro?
Or...does it really matter?
p@mast3rs wrote on 8/12/2007, 7:37 PM
Again, I have no problem with the name addition. I was merely referring to all those little requests in the thousands of threads saying how changing the name to pro would garner more acceptance.

IMO, adding Vegas' name to Movie Studio was stupid but then again, thats why I dont run their marketing department. But as your normal consumers will still have problems as Vegas Movie Studio would lead them to believe that VMS is the better package as it has MOVIE and STUDIO in its name. In essence, they have a complete studio whereas Vegas is just for pros..not studios. Semantics suck sometimes.
rmack350 wrote on 8/12/2007, 9:13 PM
I sure can't remember anyone simply asking for the word "Pro" in the name, let alone lots of requests. But maybe I didn't read those posts.

Your VMS argument is well taken, the name Studio suggests a suite to me.

I like the name change. Their closest comepetitors are Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro. I like the name change to Sony Creative Software too. It would great to see a big push too.

It also seems that Sony is still thinking longterm about Vegas Pro. Their was a worry that Sony would stop development and not support Vegas longterm. Well I think the name changes are an indication they still do have a longterm vision for Vegas Pro. I also think an idea behind the name change is entice folks who started hearing about Vegas around Vegas 6 to look at it again. That Vegas is ready for the big time. Hopefully the features back that up.

Vegas is Dead! Long live Vegas Pro!

I'm am by no means a "blind loyalist." Like I've said before, I have the choice of launching Vegas, Premiere or Avid Media Composer when I start a project. 95% of the time, I launch Vegas because it allows me to get the job done quicker and easier. I use it because it simply works better.

I don't know, I am pretty excited about version 8. You know the press release will not include any detail that is going to get this audience excited. Let's face it, most of what we are asking for is nerd fodder for a press release. Even if it is a release for a broadcasters event, how many are going to understand 10bit per colour channel as opposed to 8bit? I have been thrilled with Vegas 7. It has so much more for me than Vegas 5 did. I have been over the moon about Sound Forge 9. I did have one crash with the initial release version, but no issues since. (Now on version 9.0b.) Thousands of files have been processed through both Sound Forge 9 and Vegas 7 and have shipped out to the world at large. The most minor thing that would be useful for my work flow: I wish there were the option to run batches in both the old school script format and the Apple Compressor like format offered in Sound Forge 9. It would make some of my batches for web and CD-ROM delivery about 90 seconds more convenient. My second, and probably more important desire is that the price for the upgrade be as good as the Sound Forge $99 upgrade. (I don't think I have even felt better about $100 spent on software.)

I don't recall anyone asking for the word "Pro" either, but FWIW, just to be clear; It was called Vegas Pro in the first few years of the product. This isn't anything really new.
But for those of us that have to constantly refer to the product line one way or another in daily conversation, the name change is most welcome.
apit34356 wrote on 8/12/2007, 11:34 PM
"Pro" additional is a good marketing move, helps the XDCAM and similar midrange camera products crowd more and that's where the money is. If I remember the marketing data correctly, Sony's movie studio is very strong on the consumer market side. This helps separate the the two products line a little. Lets hope Sony will continue adding new XDCAM features, new formats push and better library management for Vegas.

Of course in line with the addition of the word "Pro" comes a substantial cost increase. My money is on around $5,100 for a new licence and $5,000 to upgrade from Vegas 7.0 to Vegas Pro 8.0.
An upgrade from Vegas 7.0 to Vegas 8.0 will cost the usual $150.

Main difference between Vegas 8.0 and Vegas Pro 8.0 will be the gunmetal color scheme and the word "Pro" added to the title bar. The "Pro" version will ship with a 987 page hard cover glossy full color manual.
