VEGAS to Davinci Resolve Studio

alifftudm95 wrote on 1/6/2021, 6:23 AM

Just got myself Davinci Resolve Studio today. Will be doing coloring in that program, but I still do my edit & cuts in VEGAS.

The only issue I had now is I cant import VEGAS xml timeline into DR. It will prompt me with a missing clip and it wont be able to recreate the timeline/cut from VEGAS.

But it will able to import the media into DR media pool from the VEGAS XML.

The only workaround for now is to export VEGAS XML, import into Premiere Pro, re-export XML from PR and import into DR.

DR read PR xml just fine. I really hope this can fixed soon.

It doesnt work any kind of media, MOV, MP4, XAVC-S, just same. It will show as missing media.

Just out of interest - because I don't use Resolve.
Hasn't that already been discussed here?

Have you lodged this as a problem with DaVinci Resolve? It could be a problem with Resolve more than a problem with Vegas Pro (i.e. an inability to properly import XML exported from VP).

Fairly new to DR & blackmagic stuff, gonna lodge a report to them soon. But seems like vegas & fcpx shared similar problem whereby DR wont import the TL properly

this tutorial basically teach user to fix the clip timecode, but its not practical & time consuming

At the risk of repeating myself.....

Vegas xml export to Resolve does work, you just need a media type where Vegas can read the timecode. The issue will be peculiar to something in the way you are working so I don't think you will get much joy by asking on the BM forum, but you can always try. :)

(BTW make sure all the framerate settings match or obviously timecode will be wrong and impossible to interpret by Resolve. Also, it can't be a complex timeline - XML won't support that - just simple edits.)

If you still can't make it work, but want to CC in Resolve and edit in Vegas, then I recommend just grading clips in resolve and the render (individual CC'd clips) to a format like Grass valley or cineform and then bring those into Vegas for editing/finishing.

I'm not sure how you set up timecode in VEGAS/Resolves, possible to share a step/guide that might work for me?

Hi Dato,

It is quite simple - really nothing to "set up" for timecode - either the footage has source timecode readable by Vegas or it doesn't.

For example, GH5 UHD footage at 23.976 fps has timecode readable by Vegas. It looks like this (either in original mp4 or in converted grass valley HQX file format:

So, just add your clips to the Vegas timeline and check that you can see timecode like shown above. MAKE SURE PROJECT AND CLIPS ARE SAME FRAME RATE. (e.g. 23.976 ). Then you can export a FCP7/Davinci xml and import the "edit" (keep it simple - cross dissolves and clip motion are OK) as an xml timeline into Resolve. The timecode should show up correctly:

... and your timeline with clips/edits should show up automatically:

Try a simple three clip timeline and report back. Good luck!

You don't need to save any Avid AAF files. "Export AAF, XML..." is a menu title in Resolve, from which you would export an FCP 7 XML file if you want to try to bring a project from Resolve to VEGAS. But if you want to bring colour corrections back to VEGAS from Resolve then you need to render intermediate files such as Grass Valley HQX, because colour correction FX etc. are not transferable.

Post the media properties showing timecode like I did in the PNG above. I bet it doesn't show valid timecode.
