Vegas v21 won't create a proxy file.

Folli wrote on 11/25/2023, 9:29 AM

Hello. I'm in the process of editing a 30min+ 4k gameplay video. I recently ran into an issue where I couldn't create a proxy file of a video clip. I fixed it then by deleting some stuff from the PC to create more SSD space. (before that, only around 20GB was available) Now I ran into the same issue again and I have a lot of space on all of my discs. I need to be able to create these proxy files since it's so much easier and faster to edit that way.. but Vegas goes into infinite loading when I try to make proxy file and crashes pretty easily while it's in that loading phase. Any help?

In addition to that, the video that I'm trying to create a proxy file of, can't be cut or edited in any way in general. Vegas instantly goes into some loading and then crashes... It seems to me like I've reached some kind of a limit/treshhold. I have no idea how to fix this. Probably not so relevant but I have Dynamic RAM Preview max: set to 75%, which is as far as it goes (24526MB of 32702MB)

That is very important because it is not used for making proxies. Set it back to the default value.
BTW., which version and buildnr. of Vegas Pro are you using?

Vegas Pro version 21.0 build 187
RAM has been set back to the default 5% value.
I've been using the program for over 3 years. I always had very frequent crashes... So I looked everywhere for some kind of soulution or an improvement. That RAM option popped up a lot so I increased it.

j-v wrote on 11/25/2023, 10:13 AM

OK, but is it now again possible to make and use proxies?

No, "Building video proxy" stays at 0% and the program crashes if I try to do anything.

@Folli You might benefit from a Vegas reset. First save your Vegas preferences and then hold down ctrl-shift while Vegas starts till you get the reset screen. If you took Windows close to it's storage limits, your drives are likely fragmented. Emptying trash and running disk optimization on all of them might help.

@Folli
With me it creates proxies when needed.

Tried it, still the same results. I have no idea what to do.

@Folli
Because proxies are build on the same location as the mediafile: How much empty space is on your C:\ drive? and what processor are you using? Do you have another GPU(iGPU) than the Nvidia?

Looks like a pretty small clip... if you put it on a cloud drive for download, folks here could try it.

Folli wrote on 11/25/2023, 12:33 PM

@j-v
220GB of empty space is on C drive. I'm using i-7 8700 and no, just one GPU, RTX 2070.
Anyways, I got it fixed. I recorded the same clip, converted it from MKV to MP4 and then added it in the project. This is just a normal process that my clips need to go through, but for some reason it worked this time... but it didn't from the first try. I just did this same thing the second time and there we go. No idea what fixed it but hopefully I won't run into this anytime soon.

@Folli One of the cited vp21 build 187 improvements is mkv handling... maybe you don't have to do the converting anymore.

RogerS wrote on 11/25/2023, 8:38 PM

If you need help with OBS or Handbrake settings that work well in VEGAS feel free to ask.

Folli wrote on 11/29/2023, 10:02 AM

@RogerS Here are the Handbrake settings that I've adjusted for my 4K video, this is the first time I'm trying out 4K. I was using 1080p for a while and It was time to upgrade. Let me know if there's something I could try changing or if you need some more screenshots.

Folli wrote on 11/29/2023, 10:06 AM

@Howard-Vigorita I did not know that! It would be great if I could skip the whole Handbrake part, but it seems like Vegas doesn't handle it so well for me. While loading the frame, the screen turns grey, then black when it's loaded... I know that there was an option to turn "Experimental MKV handling" ON or something similar, but I cant seem to find it anymore so that might be why, or it simply doesn't do well with my specific kind of MKV files. Either way it's not a dealbreaker but thanks for letting me know!

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 11/29/2023, 10:25 AM

@Folli I think they got rid of the deprecated mkv option and activated it by default in the new build. If your mkv clip isn't working and you make a sample available on a cloud drive, maybe the developers will see it and fix the problem.

RogerS wrote on 11/30/2023, 6:20 AM

I'd start with the production standard preset, go with a CQ of 15 or higher (not 0!) and in the custom box below change keyint to your framerate. Constant framerate AVC works well in VEGAS.
