If it's being decoded by so4compoundplug then you could try disabling that.

In particular, try disabling GPU acceleration of video processing in your video preferences, if you have that enabled. That might make it play less smoothly, but it might stop it crashing.

Nick, GPU to disable is no option for fast work. It's just one way to complete projects that do not work otherwise.
The problem is related to the size of the real-time preview window. With a small window, there are no more crashes in the crash projects. With too big windows crash!
All in all, however, 10 of 8 projects work without any problems. Then again are clips where Vegas has problems.
All other is ok. - (FAQ) Troubleshooting Crashing and Stability - I have noticed everything.
Knowing which codec Vegas is using to play files is critical in diagnosing these sort of problems. That "plugin" info is at the bottom of the Vegas file properties referred to in the second part of that same link that I posted for MediaInfo (the page is currently giving a 404 error).
I am just curious if the crash happens with the preview window aspect ratio not being a common aspect ratio. Try and keep the preview window at a commonly used 16:9 ratio like 1024x576, 1440x810, 1280x720 or 1920x1080, anything without fractions.
It took a while until I had another crash project. Today I had one again. - I have followed your advice. The video is not scaled to preview size. But: setting: "good" and "half"
