Video Preview on External Monitor stuck on single frame for playback

kyle-pitts wrote on 7/22/2023, 11:51 AM

Hey, Vegas pro-brain trust. Long time user of this program, way back to Vegas Movie Studio 11. I picked up Vegas Pro 20 some time ago. I initially ran into a few issues, figured them out and it's been great. I was forced to reinstall a couple of months ago and now my Video Preview on External Monitor now sticks on a static frame while previewing. I can render and it comes out fine but even on 32" screens its difficult to use the tiny preview window when I should be able to use a full-screen option.

  • I have tried switching my primary and secondary for preview and it's the same.
  • I also tried disabling HDR
  • I have spent the last 3 hours reading various articles here but I can't find any options to get me unstuck from a single frame
    • If I drag the cursor to scroll through my video manually that seems to work but not while "playing" the preview.
    • When I play the preview the cursor moves & the audio sounds fine as it goes through the video, just the preview is stuck on a single frame when using the external monitor for either primary or secondary screen.
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Nvidia 3060 TI
  • 64 GB Ram
  • Dedicated SSD for Rendering
    • The recorded files are on the same SSD
  • Antivirus is set to exclude the entire SSD and Vegas Pro

Drivers are up to date, I've even done a full uninstall and re-install of my nvidia drivers (I saw several posts about people having issues here)

@kyle-pitts - Ouch! - I'm listening. I'm also hoping that somebody will jump in.

@kyle-pitts
Set in Options/Preferences/Video the amount of Dynamic RAM Preview max. to the default value (5%) or 0.

@j-v  currently set to 16gb / 25% are you saying I should lower it to 5% or 0 ?

kyle-pitts wrote on 7/22/2023, 6:51 PM

@Former user  when I first go V20 I had to change it to be QSV or Intel, if I adjust it to anything else I get just a black screen

Former user wrote on 7/22/2023, 8:42 PM

@kyle-pitts Oh, that's not good 😮😢 don't know what to say, you've said your drivers are up to date, 🤷‍♂️

Grazie wrote on 7/22/2023, 9:22 PM

@kyle-pitts - You’ve confirmed that the External monitor is working and connected. Something is choking VP20 from doing the preview flow processing. Tracking down just where this could be is tough. In the meantime I’d suggest these two adjustments:

Do as @j-v suggests. The other is to set the Event Thumbnails lower from ALL. You need to reduce the work the your PC is having to do process the External preview flow.

Grazie wrote on 7/22/2023, 9:37 PM

@kyle-pitts - I just read your other Post regarding processing:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-20-stuttering-preview-and-slow-rendering--139714/#ca872792

Is there anything there that could impinge on your issue here? Formats and Templates? Need to track down just what and where VP is having its maths-processing choking. Having an i9 CPU is plenty power. This is a tough one.

@Grazie Have you any thoughts on that, If he can't use an RTX3060 there's something maybe deeper wrong isn't there?

I think start here. For preferences/ video, the NVIDIA GPU should be the default and kept there. It should not lock up. To confirm, there is a cable from this GPU to your monitor (not from the motherboard iGPU to the monitor)?

The GPU generally functions? You can pass a benchmark like 3DMark (free) with a reasonable score?

Can you try one of the known good VEGAS benchmark projects in my signature? Do they have preview issues?

What does "I also tried disabling HDR" mean? In Windows?

@RogerS - Yes, I've been told before. So, it would have needed an additional Graphics card to setup the PC in the first place - yes?

Grazie wrote on 7/23/2023, 2:20 AM

@kyle-pitts - Thanks to @RogerS, I've now done some homework and noticed that your CPU with that "K" reference is "Unlocked for overclock but with integrated graphics card". Have you been experimenting with overclocking?

I don't see those under my auto option

@RogerS the monitor woks fine. It's a dual monitor setup I use it 8-12 hours a day just about every day for everything, so I know it's working w/o any issue.

@Grazie  not sure, what screenshot show's that. I haven't done anything with overclocking at all on this PC. But if you point it out maybe something got changed by an update or something ??

@Jack S I've done a full re-install of the program but not the PC. Way too much on this machine (including work) that use every day to do just a full blown windows reinstall.

GPU yeah, functions fine. I even play a game called star citizen that's pretty CPU/GPU intensive and it plays fine.

I'll check the benchmark tool, I didn't know vegas had one.

... and your system image backup solution is?

  1. Aomei Backupper Standard
  2. Macrium Reflect
  3. System Image Backup in Windows 10 or Windows 11

It's likely you have "Way too much on this machine" for boot disk failure, too. Pick one, any one.

ah well most of the stuff is new. New SSD's all around, new Video card, the mobo is probably a year old along with RAM. I just do a lot on it. So having to re-install the OS and like 20 other programs would just be a pain. I don't think it is operating system related. It feels specific to Vegas but more specific to the Video Preview function.

Good to hear the GPU generally works fine and the NVIDIA GPU is plugged into monitors directly- had to ask to try to rule out factors.

I agree with resetting VEGAS, worth a try and all you lose is customized settings (projects, plugins, etc. remain the same).

Not sure why we're talking about CPUs or overclocking, etc. as this is clearly a GPU/VEGAS problem. Yes K series can be overclocked, as can the X-series Grazie uses. The K processor I'm typing on is overclocked.
