Video stabiliser glitches

gabgilson wrote on 9/20/2018, 9:07 AM

I'm using vegas pro 16 with latest build (261). Something very wrong with the video stabiliser. My normal work flow is to create a subclip of the section needing stabilising. Then I apply stabiliser. When I render, I get jumps in the result as if the stabiliser is turning on and off so the zoom level jumps during playback. But it's intermittent. Am I doing something wrong? When it works, it looks fab, but I'm having to ditch the results and go back to using prodad, big waste of time! GPU is GTX 1050. Files are all on external usb drive.

Did you try to limit in 'Preferens/Video' the 'Maximum render threads' to 1 ? (not any number above)

This helped at least on my system.

See also this thread.

Hi. Thanks for reply! Tried setting to 1 thread just now, no improvement sadly. Also tried turning off GPU in the video tab, but that didn't help.

Do you use the old or the new stabilizer?
If it is the new one can you show us your settings?

Hi. The new stabiliser. Settings are just the default. I make a subclip so it only works on the bit of the clip I need, and then click analyse. It defaults to Accurate and Translation settings.

I also get a funny smear at the top of the screen on pans. All the glitches vanish if I use prodad stand alone software.

Try "accurate" and "similarity" and do you see your problems in preview or after rendering?

My results show using the Mercalli plugin that it does just as good or better than the Vegas Video Stabilizer and at about half the speed with less area being cropped. I think the Vegas Video Stabilizer is better than the previous Sony, but not yet up to par with the ProDad Mercalli 4 plugin or standalone.

Hi, I finally found a solution. If I reduce the smoothing magnitude first to something low like 0.2 and then put it back up to what I need - 2.5 etc, then it stops the glitching. Must be something to do with the reset bug that others have been seeing. Really, really glad to find a fix. For many of my shots the vegas plugin is good enough, just need for mercalli for walking or more.
