Just updated to latest version. Just put an avi file into the timeline. Both Video & Audio are there in the timeline, but no video in the preview window, just Black. Had no issue with previous version.

I'm using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4K card to convert from VCR to digital. Then to Blackmagic Media Express.
Then it goes to a HD for VP23.
Media Express settings:
project Video Format: 525i59.94 NTSC
Capture File Format: AVI 8-bit YUV
AVI 10 bit YUV (This is the one I used)
AVI 10 bit RGB
AVI Motion JPEG
QT uncompressed 8-bit YUV
" " 10-bit YUV
" " 10-bit RGB
QT DVCPRO 50
DPX 10-bit RGB
I couldn't copy & Paste that info so I typed what it shows.
@ChasMc The info from Vegas properties isn't really that helpful. Suggest you download free MediaInfo which gives the important format and codec id used by the video stream... and lets you copy and paste it. Configure MediaInfo's View option to Text so it looks something like this:

Btw, that's MediaInfo for MagicYUV which also uses avi as a container.
I tried getting Mediainfo but found it through an "app store" but didn't want to pay to get in.
I've gone through all of the capture formats this time and tried them in VP23. None of the AVI- YUV versions work, but the AVI-10 bit RBG version worked.

The codec maker, AJA, site lists their AJA Video Systems Xena codec in their legacy section. Kind of odd that Black Magic would use that in a new 4k capture card. Maybe it's a fallback codec used only for legacy firewire capture from older vcr hardware.
Btw, if I understand correctly, you were able to use an older version of Vegas to capture via your old firewire card until you moved to win11? Older versions of win11 didn't provide the firewire/1394a driver by default and required it be downloaded from the Microsoft store... but I don't see it there anymore so newer win11 Update may now make it available again as it did with win10. You might try putting that old card back in and following the steps outlined here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/1470327/how-to-install-firewire-in-windows-11
If that doesn't work due to the age of the card or version of win11 you have, there is a legacy driver available from current 1394a manufacturers like LinksTek and Vantec on their web sites. They recommend it only be used as a last resort. If you can get win11 to see a 1394a card with a TI chipset, then the older version of Vegas that included the firewire capture feature (no longer in vp23) should work with win11 as it did before. I went through all that myself, transferring dv tapes from an older camcorder using a really old StarTech card, and am able to edit the clips captured with the older Vegas software in vp23.
I'm experiencing the same issue. The AVI file displays fine (both timeline and preview) in Vegas Pro 20 and the preview window in Pro 23 is black. The timeline shows fine. Just upgraded from Win10 pro to Win11 Pro....but the problem was happening before the upgrade...no change. Also, tried the "opencl memory" update...no change. Here's a copy of the mediainfo:

The video was captured using Black Magic Media Express on a Windows PC.
Roger and John, I did go back & reinstalled both VP20 & VP22. Took that same video and tried it in both of them. Had no problem with either of them. So, the problem has to be in VP23.
Thanks for the careful testing confirming the issue started with 23. If there's a sample files VEGAS beta testers could access, that would be helpful. Just upload it to a service like Google Drive, etc. If you'd like to do it privately that's fine- you could message me.
Double checked the AVI file in both Vegas Pro 20 and 23, both on the same PC. Vegas Pro 20 the video shows fine both on the timeline and the preview window. Vegas Pro 23 the video shows fine on the timeline, but a black preview window. Other files do display fine in Vegas Pro 23. Here's a 30 second sample clip:
Not sure if this is related. I also have another file that does not even load in v23 and have no problem in v20. Here's the mediainfo:
