VP23, help me understand why I need to repeatedly render

anthony-chiappette wrote on 1/27/2026, 4:20 PM

I've brought this up before, but it's still driving me nuts.

Sometimes I can complete editing and rendering a project without issue, but mostly, I have to try rendering my projects 3, 4, 5, 6 times before it will fully complete. Can anyone offer any logical explanation as to why this is happening?

I am certain it's not down to the native file types or assets I am using or the render settings. I say this because it was a problem with any of these, then the rendering would fail every time, at the same place.

Sometimes I can render all the way through on the first shot. But mostly I have to render as much as 5 or 6 times before it completes successfully. And it fails at different points every time I attempt to render. Sometimes I get the error reporting popup, sometimes I do not, and it just freezes during the rendering process and I have to kill Vegas in Task Manager.

I have submitted the error reports with advanced info at least 50 times already. Now I no longer bother as it seems useless. There is no logical reason for this to happen other than lousy programming. As I stated, if it were a render setting issue or asset issue, it would happen every time, not fail 3 times then complete on the 4th attempt.

I have been using the same type assets for several years over several versions of Vegas, and version 23 is the only version that crashes like this. It might be down to the RTX 5060 card, I don't know, but it doesn't happen in V22.

I am using MP4 files 60p 1920 x 1080 @ 50Mbps XAVC-S, and use the same parameters in the render settings (AVC H-264), using NVENC. Only assets are the native files, animated text events, PIP in some form, PNG picture files (taken as snapshots from the timeline), built in transitions and usually a 2nd audio track recorded at 24 bit 48Khz on my TEAC digital recorder.

Windows 11 (latest build), currently using Vegas Pro 22 latest build, and limited VP23 use to gauge performance and ease of use differences. @anthony-chiappette Hi, you've mentioned that it doesn't matter what file types & that it crashes at different points in the timeline.. OK,,, I read in your Signature SSD's, multiple SSD's, so rendering to slow HDD is not a problem, but are your project files on multiple drives..? What is your PC doing, Is the RAM filling up, what does Taskmanager say whilst rendering?

Just wait for the next vp23 update and see if that fixes the issue. It can't be too long now, I hope!

Hi. The camera files all reside on one drive, the project files along with the supplemental PNG captures are on a different drive, the additional audio is on a 3rd separate drive, and the rendered output is written to a completely different drive so it wouldn't be a matter of input/output reading/writing to the same drive at the same time.

I didn't say the file types don't matter, I stated that I always use the same file types / formats so that should not be a contributing factor since at some point the render is successful.

I generally leave the computer alone when I start the render, only to come back to a pop-up error reporting dialog or a frozen screen. On my next render I will sit with the computer and task manager opened.

Thank you.

I have a suspicion that 24 will be released before an update to 23 is released. 😟
