  Thanks, works! But there is a new problem -- Parent Track Motion starts with 1080x1080 image parameters and only such a square can be animated (child tracks contain 1920x1080 video). If I manually change it to 1920x1080, the image obviously expands.

  @totol Instead of using the Border effect, you could use a color gradient on the top track for the border. You can use track motion to move and resize the border to fit the cropped image or video. In Color Gradients, there is one called Blue Movie

  When opening pan/crop in a new event, I cannot recall that pan/crop has ever 'remembered' the zoom or any other pan/crop setting used in the previous event - it always reverts to the default setting - so not a bug, just normal and expected
