8.1 doesn't have the new trimmer features that are included in 8.0c...I don't really need them but I though it was kind of odd.

Yeah, I was just going to mention the lack of the new trimmer functions in v8.1, but you beat me to it.

During Beta, I found several freebie VST's that Vegas didn't like. Answer is to copy, rename VST folder to a location that won't be scanned, copy VST's over one at a time to find the culprit. It might be that there is a better way, but that worked for me.

For all who said that x64 Vegas Pro was for Vista only - I can verify that it installed with no issues on both my laptop and desktop running x64 XP Pro. It also boots extremely fast and edits HDV content from my HC7's no problem.

Thanks for that video post, Spot! Excellent info! :)

"Is it just me or are the Vegas file icons kind of crappy looking?"

Perhaps it's better that he doesn't, lol; considering all the complaint threads that've been flying around the board, recently.

Vegas 8.1 finally rendered a project in 32-bit color mode to the Standard Blu-ray 1920x1080 60i template without crashing on Frame 1! Second half of the timeline had red thumnails, but it did it!So far so good.

A second project I opened (8b), it asked me to replace all the project media, one item at a time. A bit annoying, but it opened - seems like the dialog is different compared to 8b, i.e. no auto search and replace.

"Cut my render time in half (John Cline's render test). 1 minute 3 seconds on 8.0c. 31 seconds on 8.1."

What format are you rendering to, and what project settings? I'm afraid I can't see so big improvement with my system (QX6700, 8 GB RAM) - still around 105 seconds.

He's probably rendering "good" instead of "best"..... I made the same mistake.

It seems to be faster but not by a whole lot. With both at "best" I get about 8 seconds faster. But then on the other hand as I said in another post, I would be surprised if 8.1 was faster at rendering since I don't think that's the main intent of 64 bits.... the machine SHOULD run smoother on the time line..... not necessarily faster.

Hi,

Can we then assume that SCS did NOT (yet!) utilize the new SSE4 instructions in these new 64 bit processors??

What a pity - if that is true? But also a possibility for later improvement - the question remains - how mch later ;) ?

And about playback speed, is there any improvement with fx, pip, track motion etc… ?

Yeah, right! I've already been doing this for every upgrade of Cubase that I've had over the last 11 years! I can't operate without some of my favorite free VST plugins, but, yes, sometimes they have their problems.

I spelled it out in the render test thread, but what I did was both.

Each showed an improvement. Here is what I wrote in that thread:
Now
-1 minute 2 seconds with 8.1 pro default (4 threads)
-1 minute 1 second with 8.1 pro with internal prefs set to 8 threads.
-When I changed the settings to good from best it dropped to 31 seconds.

Previous
-2:13 with all 8 threads enabled on 8.0a (Best)
-2:04 with only 4 threads enabled on 8.0a (Best)

Comparison
- it took 1 minute 3 seconds in 8.0c (good) and 31 seconds in 8.1 (good)

8 cores (2.50ghz each) and 8gigs of ram.

I can't think of anything better to complain about. Pretty much everything else seems nearly perfect. I thought Vista 256x256 icons were part of being Vista compatible and getting that little logo. Maybe it's not.

Question: Will veg files made in 8.1 be compatable with 8.0c?

I assume they will but haven't tried.

As long as the 32 bit codec and plug-ins that are used in 8.0c are recognized by 8.1, so far my experience is that many of the veg files that I have tested seem to work. Sometimes it's hard to tell unless you meddle around with them for awhile with the new software, though.
MUTTLEY wrote on 9/12/2008, 10:26 AM

Cool, thanks for the reply. Yea, working on a project and (once I can get my plugins working) will be doing them in 8.01 and my client isn't 64bit so he'll be on 8.0c.

okay, took the plunge since i don't have any outstanding projects...

so far so good. did read about path browse problem with blue-ray burn - since i haven't as yet bothered with br i'm not panic'd, but would like to know if this is a bug just in case...

with m15 i find it's found in sd mode, but not in hdv unless i run a hdv tape?

You probably have M15 in Auto. Switch it via menu to DV for DV and HDV for HDV. This throws all NLEs off the scent.

If you have one instance of 64 open and one instance of 32 you cannot drag and drop like you could with previous versions of vegas. However, you can have the same exact project open in both, working in both.

For example, I needed a cinescore generated piece. I opened up 32 bit and the project that was open in 64 and generated the music. I saved it and then brought 64 back up and did a file/open and it is there. Not as convenient as drag and drop though.

Vegas is like a smokin' hot woman that's cheated on me but I keep taking her back. Just yesterday I was editing a 720P project and had repeated crashes while rendering and while previewing. In my frustration I was about to swear Vegas off forever when 8.0c came out this morning. So I installed it and have now rendered the same project several times with no problems. I haven't tested it out completely to see if all my crash problems are going away but this is at least encouraging.

The crashing problem is widespread enough that if it isn't fixed in this revision I won't be coming back anymore. I refuse all the arguments that it is a machine configuration problem - I have Vegas at home and at work on 5 different machines and they were all rock-solid until 8.0a came out and then there were problems everywhere. Making excuses that my machine isn't configured correctly is something Avid would have said 5 years ago.

Keeping my fingers crossed... (because I do love her after all).

I really love the new Trimmer features (overwrite, fit to fill, etc…)

Another good thing:
Menu Option > Preferences > Video Tab > Thumbnails to show in video Events
You can choose : None, Head, Head/Tail(love it), Head/Center/Tail, All.

It would be cool SCS list ALL change in 8.0c

A little over a month ago I went from V5 to V8.
I like some of the "new" editing features in V8 but I used to have 3 or 4 instances of V5 open and not have a problem with the external preview.
Now when I switch from one instance to another it sometimes either stays on the previous preview or I get a blue screen (however if I turn my deck off and back on that usually sets it to the current instance).
My question is, from everything I've read so far about this update (V8 C not V8.1 because I am still XP Pro 32 bit working with SD only) it will not help my issue...would you agree ?
Thanks,
Randy
