Audio portion truncated Vegas 18 and 19

William-Niemi wrote on 4/1/2022, 5:31 AM

I have a project where the audio portion of the video clips suddenly stops after about one second into the clip. This is new behavior that just started.

I have this screenshot of the project from a month or so ago. Notice that there is audio throughout the clips. I took this screenshot to document an audio problem from the security camera.

This project was completed and exported and I have the original export. It was behaving as expected. But I opened up the project the other day and I discovered that all the clips had audio altered/missing. The audio portion after about 1 second just flatlines. There should be audio in the places I've circled in red.

I have the original clips and they play audio as expected in VLC. There is audio present through the entire clip while playing in VLC.

I thought it might be a Vegas 19 setting since I just updated the software Monday, so I created a new project in Vegas 18 and imported the clips. It's doing the same thing to imported clips in Vegas 18.

Thanks in advance.

That is very odd indeed. It's great that you've tested it in Vegas Pro 18 only to unfortunately find the same issue. Could you please refer to https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/ and provide the information requested therein particularly under sections B & C. Most helpful would be point C.1 and upload a detailed MediaInfo report (a free app linked to in C.1) so the forum will have detailed knowledge about your media.

Also, do you have any 3rd party video or audio codec packs installed other than the codecs installed by Vegas Pro? If yes, which ones?

And just as an outside chance, is your computer's audio driver up-to-date?

Aside from what @Dexcon requested to help you, do you have any audio automation enabled? I once had a similar occurrence, where I had inadvertently muted some events in the automation settings.
A hidden volume envelope could cause a similar behavior.

William-Niemi wrote on 4/2/2022, 4:34 AM

rraud... there is no automation. Also, I started a new project and imported the clips and they appear on the timeline as pictured above. Yet they play with audio in VLC.

And... I previously built a project from these same clips that worked as expected. It's perplexing, but I think it has to be a project setting, maybe a sfk file problem (spitballin' here), or somehow there's a problem with the clips. Don't see how, though, the project has been sitting there on my computer for several weeks.

Thanks for your responses. I've been busy, but I'll get to the studio and provide the information Dexcon requested later today.

maybe a <.sfk> file problem

I do not think so, but you can try rebuilding the waveforms.. As I recall; "Rebuild audio peaks" in the 'View' menu.

@William-Niemi

I had a Canon G15 camera that truncated the audio by four frames at the beginning and end of the recordings. Please share a short clip on a cloud drive.

Looks like the Canon G9 did it at the end of a clip. Possibly the same duration.

I've had the problem with the missing sound too, but @William-Niemi says in his opening statement:

I have the original clips and they play audio as expected in VLC. There is audio present through the entire clip while playing in VLC.

We need Mediainfo for the source and rendered file and/or a short sample of the source.

This is security camera video? What kind of camera?

Security cameras record at varying frame rates.

Wow, I put in all the info that Dexcon asked for, and the post disappeared with a broken link error when I clicked the Comment button.

I'll try again.... 👶 Hope this posts!

======= THE SYMPTOMS ======

I have a project comprised of several video clips from the above camera. This project was completed back in January, and it has been sitting idle since a couple of days ago.
It looked like this:

You can see that there's audio throughout the video clip except for the circled parts which are caused by how the camera handles motion alarms. Anyway, the video and audio worked fine and I exported a video from this project that works great.

This is a screenshot of the project in Vegas 19:

Notice what the audio track looks like...

>>>>> So I tried opening a new project in 18 and imported the same clips.... same problem. I circled the missing audio in the SS of Vegas 18 below.

is this related to my audio problem?

john_dennis wrote on 4/2/2022, 8:30 PM

Here is a solution to get your work out the door.

  • Run you source through Handbrake, VideoReDo, FFMPEG and reencode the audio to something video editors are more used to using. 8 kHz/96 kb/s is for answering machines.
  • If you can export at 48kHz / 192 kb/s from your security software that might solve the problem.

Not all versions of Vegas Pro on my machine experienced the issue. After changing the audio in VideoReDo, Vegas 13-19 worked without issue.

Vegas 13

Vegas 14

Vegas 15

Vegas 17

Vegas 18

Vegas 19

Converting to Pro Res Proxy in Shutter Encoder worked, too.

I don't care if the Vegas Pro development team never does anything to ingest security cam video.

Former user wrote on 4/2/2022, 8:38 PM

This is what I get with default settings,

Top is dragging on to timeline, audio at the end is removed

Bottom is dragging into media bin, then dragging on to timeline

William-Niemi wrote on 4/2/2022, 9:05 PM

Thank you for the responses! I'll start out with Handbrake.
Are there any suggestions for output settings? I'll have to install it first.

john_dennis, your suggestion will indeed get me up and running. !!!!

I installed Handbrake & the .NET files required, and ran a file through with the present for Vimeo YouTube HQ 1080p60.

Screenshot below. Thanks so very much, this will get me by for now and I hope I never have to make videos out of this camera again!

It might have been but anyway you have it solved now

Former user wrote on 4/2/2022, 9:59 PM

@EricLNZ Yes, Simply using default settings was the solution, as you already mentioned, Legacy AVC was the problem

john_dennis wrote on 4/2/2022, 10:08 PM

“footage is coverted to iPad video using CamHipro app version 4.0.27”

Have you looked at other export options from this software. Uncompressed .AVI with lpcm audio might be a better option, if exists. The iPad option was probably for sending to someone’s mobile phone over a network, rather than editing and re-encoding for youtube.

William-Niemi wrote on 4/2/2022, 10:19 PM

It might be possible to control the export parameters from a desktop app but from the iPad, the only thing you can do is download from the SD card in the camera via Wi-Fi and then the conversion puts it in Photos. There aren't any parameters to change.

I will try switching off Legacy AVC to see if that fixes it outright... it would be best tor my time crunch.

EricLNZ wrote on 4/3/2022, 6:53 PM

@john_dennis So the encoder used does make a difference to the audio.

john_dennis wrote on 4/3/2022, 9:09 PM

@EricLNZ

For this media the answer appears to be "yes".

"Enable Legacy AVC Decoding Unchecked"

AFAIK, VP-16 does not have the "Depreciated features", which has the above setting. I think the 'Depreciated features' were added in VP-17 or 18.
