AVI Support for VEGAS PRO 20 (Big Files) (Windows)

forgetfulman wrote on 8/3/2024, 8:16 PM

I'm trying to import .avi files that were generated from OBS studios.

I used OBS to record and used the "Lossless Quality" setting.

The properties of the files are:

.avi

Total Bit Rate 301393kbps

60 FPS

Audio bit rate: 1536kbps

channels: 2 Stereo

Sample Rate: 48 KHz

Size: 19GB for 9min3sec

I keep getting a codec error, and I tried installing K-Lite Mega pack but no dice. I get the "error occurred while opening a codec"

The installed location for VEGAS is on another hard drive, as the hard drive with my OS is nearly full.

I could use handbrake but I want to retain the full quality as much as possible.

@forgetfulman Hi, I'm pretty sure you're going to get told that downloading that codec pack is a bad idea & not necessary.

More info about your recording would be helpful, there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, drag the edges of the window that pops up so it shows all the information & screen capture that page, post that image on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment 👍

Or Copy & paste the information in a new comment like this -

Hi,

There are ways of recording visually lossless quality in OBS other than 300 Mbs AVI.

You do not need to record mathematically lossless quality; it is a common hobbyist mistake, lying more in the realm of OCD than anything practical.

You didn't say which flavor of AVI you recorded in OBS; however, your correct course would have been to determine the encoder, and download that specific VFW codec you need from its source.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

K-Lite is a huge can of worms crawling in your registry. I sympathize with your good intentions; however, you are entirely on your own getting rid of it. Since it replaces Windows System Codecs that Vegas needs for its normal operation, you may need to restore a known good system backup image, or perform a clean Windows OS installation, and then reinstall Vegas.

There is a chance you can transcode the files you already recorded to something compatible with Vegas in Shutter Encoder.

Best of luck, and welcome to the discussions.

I didn't see any issues with K-Lite nor read anything about K-Lite containing malware or anything or really affecting other file formats like mkvs and mp4s on VEGAS but, I did uninstall it. I also have FRAPs installed.

Did not know that OBS Lossless recorded things in AVI since I usually used the advanced options. I probably accidentally switched it without noticing.

You may need to download the UT codec.

@forgetfulman You should be able to use ShutterEncoder to transcode your UT Video clip to a near lossless format like hevc which Vegas reads. I can't seem to duplicate the OBS capture you did with the latest version of OBS but was able to transcode a lossless hevc clip I already have to Utvideo avi with Voukoder. And then converted that utvideo avi clip with ShutterEncoder to h.265 with cq=1. Which Vegas reads fine.

I tried getting OBS to capture with Nvidia using the same settings directly on my laptop but it didn't work very well.

As a practical matter, OBS can save the same format directly with gpu hardware... I tested Nvidia hevc, cqp=1 saved with OBS v3.2.2 and quality was similar to the utvideo avi clip. But the hevc mp4 was much smaller. Nvidia 10-bit hevc mp4 was 137 mbps compared to Utvideo avi at 483 mbps.

I tested with these OBS settings on my laptop:

Oh it was set to "Simple", not Advanced. And the setting on the recording to be "Lossless".

but thanks for the setting, I'll try that out. My setting was NVENC H264 with VBR and output as MKV.

A note of caution; UT codec sometimes causes Windows to hang or slow down, or not go away when you try to delete it. I don't use it.
