Can you arrange 2, 3 or 4 vertically shot phone videos side by side?

Yes, of course, it's extremely possible.

Multiple ways of doing this: like above's comment, track motion pan/crop is one way.

Another is Event Pan/Crop which is, I believe, the most common way - just right click first on that 'f-box' in event pan/crop window, to match the output aspect ratio.

Here's what i did for my 2017 travel short clip.

Ah ok, so you mean, like they 'interacting' and 'connecting' between one another like in the same place in one time?

Using the Track Motion suggestion, place each video event on separate tracks, one above the other. By default in Vegas Pro, the Track Motion icon is hidden. To get it to show, left click the hamburger menu in the far left of the track header, hit Edit Visible Button Set and then check the Track Motion check box. The Track Motion icon will then appear in the track heaader next to the other icons such as M, S and FX. Click on the Track Motion icon and then pan the box in the Track Motion workspace to the desired position. Do this for each track fine-tuning the positions as needed.

I've not seen a video tutorial that covers this (not that I've seen all VP video tutorials by any means).

Thank you so much. I knew it was probably possible, I had just never needed to do this particular kind of editing before. I will try this out and see how far I can get. Thanks again to all of you! And if you think of anything else that may help, please let me know.

I guess the timing is extremely important as you will capturing each member remotely, one by one. You will need a same base for 'sync'-requirement of each member. So, perhaps a 'template video' with clap first in the beginning editing purpose, and then a 'clue' of what each band member gonna do in specified time. I never did this too, but it's one thing to consider.

I recently did a mock-up with 28 vertical video cells in another thread using the picture-in-picture FX for the 1st time and found it way easier to work with than either track motion or event pan/crop. And I think it might better distribute the processing load too as it's a gpu-assisted fx.
