Cant VP21 read a 4.4.4 recorded video from OBS Studio?

Shogun__Gaming wrote on 4/15/2024, 4:48 AM

Like my title says, im trying all sorts of test, but i cant seem to get a video recorded in obs studio using 4.4.4 into vp21? is there some setting i missed or is it just not supported? i tried googling it, but cant find a good answer.
And its for any speicial reason, only because im testing all kinds of render test, to see what works and what dosent :)

Could you share MediaInfo for it? (Wondering if the set of options you created is legal/normal for the format or container. There isn't a lot of 444 video out there).

That said I don't think there is a setting you could change so the answer is probably that it isn't supported.

i will post the MediaInfo when i get home from work.

What also would be good, is for you to upload a 2 second bit of that file for us to test at the same time.

VEGASSteve wrote on 4/15/2024, 9:51 AM

The 4:4:4 footage support is implemented mostly "theoretically" on some generated samples. There is not much real life data available. It may be possible, that some code paths do not fully work with this. If you could provide some sample file, it should be easily to check/fix.

mark-y wrote on 4/15/2024, 11:32 AM

Unless your video signal, graphics accelerator, monitor screen and refresh rate all support 4:4:4 unsampled, there is no point in recording at that depth.

Think in terms of how you will deliver the video and save yourself the overhead. 4:2:2 is the top shelf for delivery and viewing, and reaches only a minority of the viewing audience.

@RogerS here is a test recording i made a few days ago, VP21 will not accept it in any way

HEVC 8 bit 4:4:4? Seems like a bit of a red herring.

On initial search, I am unable to find any registered profile that accommodates 4:4:4 in anything less than 10 bit depth.

Although some players may play it, Vegas pretty much sticks to mainstream acquisition formats and the MPEG-LA registry.

VFR = Variable Frame Rate. Vegas works best with CFR.

Over the years, hobbyists have created many variants of open source codecs and parameters that will not open in Vegas, or are not viable in the real world. The combinations can be infinite in number. I used to get a lot of these when I was working.

Yes, that is a registered profile, not terribly common, but recognized.

There is a lot to learn about the Open Source encoders, vs. Licensed. Vegas sticks pretty much to the latter, owing to its many commercial licenses with various vendors, as they are regulated by MPEG-LA.

On the other hand open source encoding applications like OBS and VLC / ffmpeg don't have to play by any particular set of rules; they kind of make them up as they go with ubiquitous GNU / GPL "licenses."

Here's another take on decoding the format you mentioned in the Adobe forum:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/hevc-8-bit-4-4-4-footage-is-very-hard-to-playback-in-premiere-pro-sometimes/idi-p/14229324

These "swiss knife" applications are the hobbyist's playground, with dozens of unlicensed and poorly documented codecs where tinkerers can conjure almost any conceivable combinations, and the possibilities are infinite.

Kind of like Legos for video hobbyists.

When I was working more, I used to see lots of these. I affectionately call them Frankenfiles, and no one on the internet can be convinced their flavor isn't "best," whatever that is.

Maybe this subject could be a starting point for one of your tutorials ;?)

@Shogun__Gaming, try rerecord these TombRaider benchmark test with the usual basic 420 quality, and then apply the same FX, compare for the differences. Is it noticeable from your eyes ?

Unless your video signal, graphics accelerator, monitor screen and refresh rate all support 4:4:4 unsampled, there is no point in recording at that depth.

Think in terms of how you will deliver the video and save yourself the overhead. 4:2:2 is the top shelf for delivery and viewing, and yet reaches only a minority of your viewing audience.

@john_dennis wait...its showing the media info as 420??

@set i have a bunch of rendering test in my playlist https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL58fobg4WtH0LFv9owmP1cmY8wfeOfbIQ&si=uDee2VBsZFFVFJJO

@mark-y i know 444 is "special" but this is purely for science and testing :) i wanna see how things work etc :)

Shogun__Gaming wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:09 PM

did an upscaled to 4k just because, with no fx added :)

Shogun__Gaming wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:10 PM

@set but i actually do see a big difference when i watch them on my oled lg smart tv, the 420 ones i have looks washed out compared to the 444

john_dennis wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:38 PM

Youtube re-encodes everything you upload to suit their fancy for their favorite delivery format. Thus, 4.2.0.

@john_dennis hmm...can you explain why its looks better watching it on my oled smart tv compared to the 420 rendered vids? i linked the playlist in another post

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:53 PM

I'm guessing that if you're using your tv as a monitor that you didn't let the tv know you'd be sending it 444 data instead of normal hdmi which is typically 420 or 422. If your tv and video drivers do not accommodate settings like that, recalibrating can do the job. Lots of videos online about how do that with or without a colorimeter. The problem with running with a mismatch, even if you like it, is that renders will look totally different to everyone else.

Might not even look the same to you if you put the 444 clip on a usb drive and have the tv play it directly.

RogerS wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:54 PM

444 and 420 shouldn't visually look much different. Maybe fewer artifacts around the edges so easier to get a key (purer colors where colors meet). Or if you do big color corrections perhaps fewer artifacts.

Washed out suggests another issue like full range vs limited range, etc. Or the TV interprets the 444 file differently (perhaps wrongly even if it looks good).

I'd do renders of a test pattern (colorbars) so you can really see what it's doing. Black, white, grayscale, primary colors.

@Howard-Vigorita im not using my oled as a monitor, i just rewatched my vids via the youtube app build in my tv

Shogun__Gaming wrote on 4/16/2024, 11:20 PM

@RogerS if you get the time, go look at my playlist https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL58fobg4WtH0LFv9owmP1cmY8wfeOfbIQ&si=7P1Uj0xuDv4i-9DO and compared my 444 full range to my 420 full range, i see a noticable different, but where the "fault" is, im not sure.
Can you make a simple explaination on how to use the test pattern, where to get it, how to render etc?
