Confirmation of video placed on video track

Vegas Pro 23.0 (Build 302)

Am I missing something obvious here? In the project media tab, there is no indication on the icon that the file was placed on the timeline. Back in the Explorer tab the event does show a red dot for those files place on the timeline. I went through preferences to see if I could find a solution for that, but I did not see one.

Anybody know how to get the 'red dot' (or any visible indication) in the Project Media tab that the file was placed on the timeline?

Thanks, Barry

A red dot is not really needed in the Project Media window because that window is only populated by media that has been placed on the timeline. You can test this for yourself by opening a new project and the Project Media window will be blank, then add some media to the timeline and that media will then automatically appear in the Project Media window.

The only issue is that media removed from the timeline is not automatically removed from Project Media, but that is easily remedied by going the Tools menu and clicking on 'Clear Project Media' and that updates Project Media to show only what is on the timeline at that time. Another way of updating Project Media is, in the Project Media window, click on the square icon at the top LH corner of the window - doing so likewise updates the window:

Dexcon,

Thanks for the reply. Even though what you say is true.... try:

1) Go to explorer and locate files to be used for your project. Do not drop any of them on the timeline. 2) Select all and any part of the files that you wish to use in your project. 3) Right click on one of the selected files and choose 'Add to project media'... (This is what I do as I prefer to have my source material for editing together in the project media tab as opposed to having to go back and forth between different explorer locations). 4) You will see all the files moved from the explorer in the project media... with no markings of any kind because no file was placed on the timeline yet. 5) Move one or more of these files to the timeline and no marking will appear on said clip(s). Not good if one has many clips in a project. The only way to know is to go back and forth to the explorer windows to see the red dot. This is not ideal if the source files come from many different locations.

So the statement "A red dot is not really needed in the Project Media window because that window is only populated by media that has been placed on the timeline" is not true in the above scenario.

Thanks again,

Barry

that window is only populated by media that has been placed on the timeline.

That's contrary to my experience with VMS andVP21. Maybe it has changed with VP23?

My media goes into my Media Pane Custom Bins before I place it on my timeline. If I don't place an event on the timeline it stays in the bin. In practice such events get moved by me to my "Not Used" bin. You never know when you might need something so I don't delete it from my project. The "All Media" bin shows everything whether it's on the timeline or not.

@Dexcon You've got me wondering if VP23 is different. I've still a few days left on my trial so I'll check later.

I see Barry has just replied confirming. The background behind why we aren't currently able to have this often asked for "dot" feature was discussed recently and I've located the thread where I posted:

"Having it appear in the Project Media has been asked a few times. The situation as I understand it is that whilst it would appear easy to do it isn't. The area of VP's several millions of lines of code involved is very old and fiddling with it could have unintended consequences. So we will have to wait until there's a rewrite of the code area"

@EricLNZ  ... I think that the difference is that I don't manually load any media into the Project Media window - I let that window be solely a record of what is on the timeline mostly sourced from the Explorer window. I tried bins years ago but it didn't work comfortably enough for me; rather, I use the project folder on the HDD or SSD with different sub-folders for the capture devices used as well as sub-sub-folders for shooting dates. The result is that everything is fairly much ordered in the Explorer window and therefore easily accessible in both Vegas Pro and Windows' Explorer window.

BTW, I don't think that the Project Media window in VP23 is any different to previous VP versions - not that I've noticed anyway.

I now see what the concern is that has been raised by the OP.

@bjtap1 In the Vegas explorer you can make favorites of often used media folders. So no need to switch back and forth between a lot of folders. Just between the folders you use in your project. It's not a good idea to drop everything in the project media tab that you might use in your project without arranging. In the project media tab you could create bins to arrange your media which you have to switch between. Also you can create smart bins as I showed recently to see which media is on the timeline and which not.

3Point:

Your suggestion certainly eases the problem of going 'all over the place' to get files. I guess the best solution is to gather the material and put them in a single folder in the first place.

I found your suggestion cannot be done retroactively. After moving the folder into favorites and loading the project, the red dots did not appear for the files that were on the timeline.

Lesson learned and thank you and the others who responded.

Strange, the red dots appear also on used media in the folders I marked as favorite.

3POINT:

Again I thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, when I reload the project the red dots do not appear in the favorites folder. When I select an event on the timeline and choose 'select in Project Media List' it is found back in the project media tab. I have found no way to copy the files from project media to explorer favorite nor have I found a way to synch.

Fortunately, it's a small project and I can 'suffer' through this and fortunately you have showed me the 'cure' for the original problem.

@bjtap1 see also my screencapture in this thread https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/the-vegas-pro-ui-needs-to-be-fixed--150516/?page=3 it shows what you could do with smart bins in the project media tab. The smart bins can be created manually.

@bjtap1 Not sure what a red dot might signify... maybe that media has changed? But in Project Media details-view there's a column for Use Count that indicates how many times each listed media appears on the timeline. If I delete media from the timeline, the count becomes 0. Vegas has always also listed clipboard snapshots saved to a file in Project Media with a count of 0. Don't know the point of that. I find it very annoying when I rename or delete the snapshots in Windows because Vegas will then complain about missing media... I have to then use the Clean Project Media option in the Tools menu to remove all Project media entries where the use count is 0.

Howard-Vigorita

Thanks for your information. I just switched to details view and indeed the count is there. That seems to make up for the red dots that, I think, should be there in thumbnail view. The red dot (which shows in the explorer) indicates that the file was placed on the timeline. Of course, the problem with detail view is you cannot see the icon of what the video clip looks like... so I guess switching views once in a while will be necessary.

Again.... thanks.
