Well, I use Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum (Bld. 143) on one computer (the one I am currently typing this on - not listed for signature pc), as well as Vegas Pro 17 (Bld. 452) on signature pc, both running Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit (1909 18363.900). I also use footage from either my Sony FDR AX-33 or AX-53 on both computers, where the settings are (both cameras) 3840 x 2160 29.970p @ 100Mbps to the .mp4 container.

Using MediaInfo, the files show as XAVC, but when brought into either Vegas Pro or Movie Studio, shows as XAVC-S in "Info Bar".

Both camera files Import and Edit within either program.

Of course, as some on this Forum would say: "YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary".

I will test the trial again. I even had a problem getting it to start. Kept crashing. Will look into this.

@david-ruby

I use XAVC-S from a Sony RX10-IV on Vegas 17-452 all day, every day and half of every night.

I also shoot 1920x1080-119.880p for slow motion on occasion.

The in-camera Proxies work well in Vegas 17-452 with the added option to Swap Video Files...

... but it's on me to change the names from the ones the camera assigns. I don't usually need proxy files to do what I do even with UHD source, though.

I don't get much help from the RX480 for timeline playback though my CPU handles full frame rate.

Ignore Disk 0 (a very old WD Black 750) and Disk 4 (an 8TB WD Ultrastar Data Center drive) as I am doing a disk copy while playing the project timeline. The video action is on Disk 1 (Intel 750 NVMe drive)

It is not just AMD GPU, all consumer GPU's are limited to 8bit colour decode for h264. It must be a legal restriction as AMD can happily decode 10bit colour VP9 and H265, while Nvidia GPU's do 12bit

On my i7-8700k with an AMD RX570 there is quite some load on the GPUs with XAVC-S UHDp30 (from a Sony RX10M2) preview

@david-ruby

I'm working since 2015 with Vegas (now with Vp17 B452) using XAVC-S footage out of my Sony RX10M2 and had no real problems with that material. Even not with projects over more than one hour. However, I alway keep the So4 reader disabled.

@Peter_P

Thanks for the nudge. I looked at Options / Preferences / File I/O and found Intel QSV enabled instead of AMD UVD. My processor doesn't have QSV.

Perhaps, the state of the setting is left over from this debacle:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/qsv-on-an-i7-6850--119174/

Changing the setting produced much more GPU decode help at the expense of having the CPU loaf:

At any rate, I'll make sure the preferred setting of the GPU decode switch is embedded in my gold system image. Thank you.

You're welcome.

OT : Did you ever try to record the GPS data with your RX10 IV (via bluetooth + mobile)?

john_dennis wrote on 6/22/2020, 9:54 AM

@Peter_P

No. I use a flip phone because I can't see the screen of a smart phone particularly in the blazing sun where I usually shoot. As an aside, I thought the EVF was a complete waste of time until I began using this camera and realized that I can't see the rear display, either. Now, my eye is glued to the view finder. I removed the handle from my video pan head.

Is that intel gpu activity also related to vegaspro, what is it doing?

Peter_P wrote on 6/22/2020, 10:31 AM

Yes, it is :

I have set up my AMD GPU for video acceleration and the Intel GPU active for File I/O.

That is true for me since quite a while. Using GPS from the mobile would not require to look at that screen. It could be carried in a pocket and communicate withe the RX10 IV.

Thanks John. I am using a sony a7III camera which uses XAVC and had a lot of problems with play back in vegas. I will give a second try at a trial.
