HEVC hvc1 Main 10@L5.2@High "Not Responding" all the time

Andrew-Stevenson wrote on 11/12/2023, 9:29 AM

Editing a small project containing hvc1 footage from a Panasonic HC-X2 and Vegas is giving "Not Responding" on average every 10 minutes. I am using proxies with the Preview window set to Draft (Full). Just moving the playback indicator to another point on the timeline can be enough to trigger it. Another time, returning the Windows focus to Vegas by clicking in the title bar was enough set it off.

Vegas 21 never recovers from "Not responding" so I have to kill it in Task Manager. I seem to remember earlier versions of Vegas would open an error report dialog when killed in Task Manager. This does not seem to happen with Vegas 21 Build 187. Has this function been removed?

Any suggestions how to workaround this, other than converting all the footage to H264?

You might learn more about the underlying cause(s) by looking at the Windows Reliability History.

Hold shift while pressing Options menu. At the bottom, select Internal. In there, search for the keyword " hang". Change to TRUE.

Next time Vegas hang, a watchdog will appear asking to terminate. Do so and send the problem report when prompted.

If you enable hang detection, just be aware it might kick in on operations that take a long time to process but are not actually hug and that the Windows "Not Responding" warning might clear if you wait long enough. I get that opening large projects with certain footage. In which case Vegas rises from the grave after some minutes have passed.

mark-y wrote on 11/12/2023, 1:09 PM

If you can change your Panasonic to record those files at ≤100Mbps, you should experience some relief. 192Mbps at 50fps 10 bit 4:2:0 is near the point of diminishing returns for your bitwise investment.

Also, those files should work fine repurposed as AVC.

Andrew-Stevenson wrote on 11/12/2023, 1:51 PM

I enabled the hang option from the Tools menu. I have tried hitting 'Ignore' 3 or 4 times when the "Operation is taking longer than expected. Do you want to terminate VEGAS?" message comes up, but it never recovers. CPU is at 3%, GPU at 1%.

I killed it in the Task Manager and sent a report to Magix with a link to this thread. All I had to do was load the project, wait for it to settle and then move the playback indicator to another place on the timeline. In fact, even just clicking on a clip in the Project Media tab will kill it too.

I suspect it is the editing on the timeline that has done for this (small project). The video from this camera plays OK on the PC (and in Vegas) before I start editing it.

@mark-y

I will give 100Mbps a try - the camera won't go any lower than that for 4K 50fps. I am also experimenting with getting Vegas to render all the clips out to AVC.

I've noticed some new options in the File I/O preferences:

Log Reads & Log Renders

I have set these to 'Detailed' now to see if anything interesting turns up.

Andrew-Stevenson wrote on 11/12/2023, 2:19 PM

I looked in the filio_x64.log and found that it is using the proxies:

But then it goes onto also decode the original source file too:

Strange. Nvidia should be able to decode hevc 4:2:0. The bitrate and framerate must be too much for it.

I have another project I was working on in Vegas 21 Build 108 which is now showing the 'not responding' problem in Build 187. It's now completely unusable in Build 187.

I downgraded Vegas back to build 108 and both projects are working fine again - quick and snappy and no hint of 'not responding'.

This is obviously a new defect Magix have introduced between Builds 108 & 187.

Unfortunately build 108 has the audio noise burst problem which looks to be fixed in 187!

@Andrew-Stevenson I strongly suspect that you tried to do "something" on the timeline during the time while the Proxy File, svp0, was still being built. It takes a good deal of time to build that file, as indicated by the progress indicator in the lower left of your screen.

One can do basically "nothing" in the project while the proxy is being built, and some people find this process to be painfully slow. However, once the proxy file has been built without user intervention, the XDCAM-EX proxy is automatic, lightweight, and downright spiffy during your editing experience. They'll work on even many i5 machines.

Instructions for creation, auto-creation, and rendering by bypassing the Preview Proxy are in your Vegas Help, and further discussed on this forum using the Search feature.

I cannot comment on application hangs and stallouts on the Vegas software versions you mentioned.

Best of luck with your project.

Andrew-Stevenson wrote on 11/12/2023, 5:26 PM

@mark-y

I am aware of the need to wait for proxies. The other test project which exhibits the same issues does not use proxies and is using a different codec (AVC) and it still shows the same issues. I think its clear where the responsibility lies for these projects functioning worse in the latest build.

RogerS wrote on 11/12/2023, 7:15 PM

I haven't seen any reports of worse AVC performance in 187. What type of AVC is it? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

@Andrew-Stevenson Are you able to upload a short camera file to a file sharing site so others can try your HEVC 420 10bit. You could also use shutter encoder to cut a section of video from an existing longer camera file using 'cut without re-encoding' function

@Andrew-Stevenson Is the project that works well with build 108 using hevc too? If the footage is something else, a sample or MediaInfo of that would also help.

Andrew-Stevenson wrote on 11/13/2023, 12:15 PM

Many thanks to everyone replying to this thread, I greatly appreciate your contributions.

@Former user

I will find some HEVC 420 10bit to upload. Just a reminder that the 'not responding' issue seemed to begin to be a problem when I started editing it up. It generally plays OK in Vegas 21 Build 187 as straight unedited clips.

I'm not sure I can share the original project with the same footage but I will see if I can reproduce this issue with media I can upload.

@Howard-Vigorita

Build 108 is running both projects OK - the first project using HEVC from the HC-X2 (media info at top of thread), the second project using AVC from the HC-VXF990 (media info below). The two formats differ a lot in terms of bitrate - the HEVC being much higher and using proxies. I didn't create proxies for the AVC (I'm not suggesting proxies are relevant to the problem, just explaining that's how I mitigated for the huge bitrate for the HEVC project).

Build 187 has been 'not responding' on both of them.

@RogerS

The second project I mentioned that was having problems is using footage from a Panasonic HC-VXF990. I have been using this camera & format for 5+ years in all versions of Vegas over those years and never had this issue before build 187. I think the 'Not responding' on this could be something about the project it doesn't like rather than the media.

Here is the the Media info anyway.

From the Vegas fileio_x64.log, it is complaining about blacklisting. Is HEVC-mgx-mp4 a problem?

@Andrew-Stevenson The avc MediaInfo above looks pretty innocuous. Any chance of a sample?

You're welcome to try a sample benchmark in my signature if you want a known good project. The media with them is AVC.

i'M seeing the usual problem with this new HEVC decoder of it only being able to play 1 file at a time, if you blend it with it'self it dies. Could others comment if they see the same behavior?
