How to render using MOV wrapper?

alifftudm95 wrote on 11/25/2021, 1:43 AM

MOV container or Wrapper is actually better than standard MP4 wrapper. Mainly because of the capabilities of MOV to contain Timecode data which is extremely helpful when working with XML/EDL.

I always export my videos using Magix AVC (H264) or HEVC (H265) codecs. However It only output MP4.

At least Voukoder plugin allow users to pick their preferred container, regardless the codec, which is great.

I hope VEGAS current AVC/HEVC codec allow users to export in MOV.

...but Vegas won't write timecode on render anyway, so what's the benefit? Now, better READ support for timecode, that would be very welcome :)

Even reading the timecode/stamp is very poor in VEGAS.

Or it never happened: e.g. DV-AVI in the past.

At least the program should be able to wrap in MOV, cuz most of my work involved with Sony camera. Sony is known for their non-working metadata which make it horrible to work with if you're sending it to Colorist.

It's perhaps a matter of license - not allowed!

We as customer think in simple way, but VEGAS is a commercial product.

PS: my knowledge is, Sony always has the saying in metadata and media exchange. Why horrible?

Most post production here in my local area will avoid using Pro level Sony cam (A7III below) (Not sure if A7SIII have same prob) if possible mainly due to repetitive file naming (Multiple C001 when card is cleared) and usage of MP4 wrapper instead of MOV which does not save any TC info which can be problematic when working with XML between NLE (VEGAS/Premiere etc) and Davinci Resolves.

BMD Trainer told me MOV is just better than MP4, useful for Post work related and can be also used as end product delivery.

"...repetitive file naming (Multiple C001 when card is cleared)"

When I bought my first Sony camera, I found that the third most annoying characteristic of the camera. I use four SD cards in a rotation and format them before I shoot. I have folder after folder of C0001, C0002, C0003 files ad nausea.

Ditto with my Sony AX100 camera. JPG numbering is sequential after swapping memory cards, but video numbering starts at 1 after swapping memory cards. After copy/pasting the video media to the editing computer's D drive (using different folders of course), I use the Bulk Rename Utility ( https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/ ) to rename all the video media into a fully sequential order.
