MOV Preview Not Working Vegas 20

Patrick-Hess wrote on 4/25/2023, 1:25 PM
  • Updated to the most recent Vegas 20 update
  • Mov files import fine. No problem
  • Mov files play in Windows Media Player or Quicktime Video player just fine and look crystal clear
  • The editor timeline shows thumbnail preview and the audio layer looks fine
  • I click play and the preview window has the initial thumbnail but never plays the video part. I hear the audio just fine.
  • I last had Vegas 18 Pro and the exact same camera source of the MOV files worked just fine in the timeline and preview. (Canon 5D Mark IV DSLR)
  • System Specs
  • Processor    AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor               3.49 GHz
    Installed RAM    63.9 GB
    Edition    Windows 11 Pro
    Version    22H2
    OS build    22621.1344
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22639.1000.0
  • MOV Video File Information:
    • Length: 3:37
    • Bitrate: 9.147MB
    • Size: 1920x1080
    • Frame: 23.97fps
  • I've changed Dynamic Ram from 75% down to 0 and back and no difference
  • I've turned on/off HEVC Decoding no difference
  • I've turned on Legacy QUICK TIME

It may have something to do with Windows 11 because Vegas 18 was on Windows 10 and it worked there.

@Patrick-Hess If you turn on legacy-quicktime in Vegas, you also have to install obsolete Quicktime software from Apple which Apple no longer supports. I leave legacy-quicktime disabled in Vegas and have no trouble using mov files in Vegas just like mp4 clips, so long as they are encoded with Avc (h.264) or hevc (h.265) codecs. One exception I've run into are mov clips made with special codecs like DNxHD... those require install of a codec pack from Avid plus the obsolete Apple Quicktime software in order to work with Vegas. Also ProRes-Raw encoded MOV is still awaiting Apple's blessing before it'll work with Vegas. But when that comes you won't need the obsolete Apple software. However, regular ProRes mov clips work fine right now without legacy or obsolete support.

It may be that I enabled the AVC instead of the HEVC and now it is showing in the preview. Thank you for your feedback.
