Multi-Band Compressor

Widetrack wrote on 5/6/2023, 7:27 PM

I've been AWOL for a while, But I fire up Vegas once in a while for fun and it's still fun to use.Mostly. Today I needed a multi-band compressor and began struggling with the same old Vegas model. Keeping it short, does anyone know of a third-party multi-band compressor that works in VP 16 or 17? I see a few out there, but they don't seem to mention Vegas.Any help appreciated.

iZotope have multi-band compressors in their Neutron and Ozone (though I'm not which versions of each have it) - but they're ruled out because as plugins they are only VST3 and VST3 wasn't introduced in to Vegas Pro 20 - the current release. Likewise, iZotope's RX10 now only comes with a VST3 plugin package.

Waves offers a range of audio plugins but you'd need to look for old versions (9.6 or earlier I think) because Waves long ago dropped compatibility support for Vegas Pro and Sound Forge Pro - but 9.6 had official support for Vegas Pro 12-14 - https://www.waves.com/support/tech-specs/supported-hosts#version-9.6

Whatever plugins you look at, make sure that it is or includes VST2 in order for it to work in Vegas Pro 16/17. If trial versions are offered, then that's a good way to find out how those plugins work in Vegas Pro.

Thanks, Dex.That's about what I feared. I'll look for the versions you mentioned.

I use iZotope Nectar and Neutron 3 as VST2.

TDR has some free ones that might be of interest.

That's a good point because Nectar 3 Plus still has VST2, but the current release of Neutron - Neutron 4 - is VST3 only.

The iZ multi-band comp that was included with Sound Forge Pro 9 and 10 was nice it terms of the GUI and sound.. unfortunately it will not run on 64 bit host, The Sonitus Ultrafunk multi-band comp was another .. but good luck finding a valid serial code. Waves has a nice one, but it will not run on many versions of VP and SF. As was stated, check out what TDR (Tokyo Dawn Records) has to offer. If you have the Sound Forge Pro Suite, the dynamic EQ works, but is time consuming to adjust, unlike the Waves, iZotope and Ultrafunk which have the traditional threshold faders and GR metering.

Ugly, clean and fast. Reaper VST2 ReaXComp is a good free choice.

Or, better, the Vega's Multi-Band Dynamics:

Multi-band compression is easy enough to whip up. Just replicate the audio track of an intermediate mixdown and throw low-pass, band-pass, or high-pass filters followed by your favorite broad-band compressor onto each track... I like wave-hammer. Dropping markers helps align the -6db response points. Keep the original uncompressed track active at a lower level for NY-style.

Widetrack wrote on 5/7/2023, 11:58 AM

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.

Juan_rios: I'm DLing that Reaper package as I write. I used Their DAW for a while and liked it quite a bit. Looking forward to trying their plugs. Do you really use the Vegas model? I've never been comfortable with it. Compression is such a simple idea, but in that GUI, I never know what I'm doing.

I'll try the iZotope and Ultrafunk models as well. appreciate the help.

BTW, having been away for a bit, I just saw that Magix has split Vegas off in some way. Are they still developing it in a healthy way? Being a Vegas fan has always been a wild ride, right from the start.

Best wishes to one and all!

Of course. I don't use external plugins, except for a few cases and I almost always use the internal ones from VEGAS, Reaper or Audition. It's just acquiring the habit.

I just saw that Magix has split Vegas off in some way.

Vegas is still developed by Vegas Creative Software (Magix Software GmbH) If that is what you ask. Otherwise, Vegas, Sound Forge and other SCS titles were acquired from Sony in 2016.

Are they still developing it in a healthy way?

Opinions differ, depends on who you ask.

@rraud Any chance someone could send @NickHope a direct download link for the SFv16 .71 update so he can add it to his direct-download link list? His list only has up to .57. I finally got it through my Magix account but that link is not direct and the DLM hide's the ball, making it difficult to download once, archive it, and then use it to update multiple machines.

Peterson wrote on 5/8/2023, 3:58 PM

Not quite multi-band but also a very comprehensive compressor : mCompressor.

There's a free version (only show a "warning message" in the GUI) and part of the cheap basic-bundle.

Be aware : Vegas V20 build 360 is quite buggy with all Melda plugins and build 403 totally destroys those VST plugins.

@Howard-Vigorita 16.1.2.57 is a SOUND FORGE Audio Studio release, and is the latest update of version 16 of that application. That's the application bundled with VP20. I don't include SOUND FORGE Pro 16 in the downloads post as it has never been bundled with VEGAS, as far as I know.

FYI, the 'dlm' download managers put installers in Documents\MAGIX Downloads\Installationsmanager\ so you can find them there.

I had a quick hunt for a SOUND FORGE Pro 16.1.4.71 download link but couldn't find one. It *might* be the following, followed by the name of the installer .exe file (which I don't know):

https://dl04.magix.net/2023/SOUNDFORGEPro16/

If someone gave me a link to download the SOUND FORGE Pro 16 'dlm' download manager, I could find the link using URLSnooper 2.

It is on Filehorse - this is a legit site, isn't it?

If not please, remove it (or mention me so I can remove it).

I got it, using Fiddler (network inspector).

I used the DLM linked in my Magix account which wasn't as slow as updating from the app notification. Hard part was finding the actual exe on my hard disk so I didn't have to download again on every machine. Found it here:

C:\Users\<my login identity>\AppData\Local\Temp\MAGIX\UPS\27B21638-40DE-44E3-8E4C-C2F9E4EDC4A0

filename was: forge161_x64_build71_uni.exe

Here's one way to check the hash of a downloaded version compared to the one I got from Magix:

PS> certutil -hashfile "forge161_x64_build71_uni.exe" MD5
MD5 hash of forge161_x64_build71_uni.exe:
c7f955db2b5ca955edf7414fc04b0ce2
NickHope wrote on 5/11/2023, 9:40 PM

@Peterson That's an older build.

@Howard-Vigorita Thanks. I still can't find it using that filename. I'd expect the path and filename to be something like this one (for an old build) that @rraud posted on the MAGIX forum.
