Rather than turning Vegas into a one stop shop for every task I'd prefer more integration with other products. Adobe has multiple apps for different tasks in one suite and this seems to be where Catalyst is heading. When I composite I need particular tools so rather than using Vegas which specialises in being an NLE I'll use Hitfilm or After Effects. I'd like Vegas to integrate with other tools but I don't want an NLE to be a Swiss army knife because the more added features the more diluted its main purpose becomes and the greater the risk of introducing further unnecessary bugs.

I realize the angst of being a fan of a product that is apparently going to be discontinued. But why is that the end of the world for most of us? Vegas already has the reputation of being wonderfully intuitive and efficient as an NLE. We also know that other NLEs have advantages that have given them dominance in the marketplace. But for my projects, what could happen in the future that would make me stop using it?

riredale,

'...what could happen in the future that would make me stop using it?'

If Vegas wouldn't be compatible with the next OS.
I already have this issue with Acid Pro, which never got an update for 64 bit support.

Windows 11 might come out next year, who knows it might be 128 bit software ;-).

Exabyte addressability is something I need.

Sad news to be sure but however much we love the application (and I've been using since VV3.0) it is a bit long in the tooth. Catalyst isn't ready for prime time and based on my trial it looks more like a consumer product but maybe there's more there than initially meets the eye. I've been through 10 new releases and only a couple have been out and out dogs. I'll have to say it's been a pretty good ride on the Vegas train.
VMP wrote on 9/22/2015, 6:46 PM
Indeed NormanPCN,

Couple the Exabyte addressability with a Flux Capacitor and run it through 1.21 gigawatts of power and you'll never have Vegas preview frame drops again!

Now lets ask a more important question: who is going to post the 180th comment?
And what does that person get?

11 Things That Can Actually Make 1.21 Gigawatts Of Power

Yeah. I think even thinking a year or two out I might switch editing software might be a little exaggerated.

I was looking at Avid's own Avid Media Composer 7 tutorials on YouTube, and I feel stunned like I just got concussed. I don't know if the host is either incredibly scatterbrained and incapable of putting together a semi-useful, coherent tutorial, or if AMC really is that complicated to use, but watching a good amount of the first 4 videos that are about 20 minutes long and I have yet to hear three words on how to edit on the timeline. It's just tedium after tedium of doing trimmer edits and pulling up all kinds of arcane menus for sound editing.

I mean, that description doesn't even do it justice. Try watching them.

@Vegas Filmmaker:
Felt more difficult learning other apps than learning Vegas Pro previously, isn't it?
Well, you are not alone on those feeling...

Probably so many similar question and challenges will come after free version of Avid released later this year.

avid free, resolve free, lightworks free - so much freedom that we're blinded to the fact that there's actually only so much a 'basic' editing progam can do. and of course all that glitters isn't necessarily gold; is it 4k, subscription based, locked in the cloud, expandable with paid for plugins, crippled so as to necessitate buying the full version, etc., etc., etc.,

i'm not sure whether i would have ever of had the energy to try and learn so many different apps to get the same end result ;-)

as it is, 13's going along fine. i've paid a fair amount for various plugins, etc., and i really don't see myself paying for them all over again. nor do i see any user input into any of the alternative nle's such as scripting or home grown plugins.

IF i ever need 4k then by that time i'm sure the marketplace will have sorted itself out and they'll be clear winners and losers to choose from.

i can help but remember using wordperfect to write my first script, i could easily still use it.

plus ça change, plus c'est la même

>>>>Deusx, I don't know where you got your info from, but generation is only included with the paid version of Fusion (Fusion Studio...999.00)<<<

My fault maybe. I'm an old Eyeon customer, so when Black magic bought them they just mailed me Fusion Studio and a new dongle. That also installed Generation on my PC. I figured that would come with the free version of Fusion too.

In any case. I'm still using Vegas and probably will for a long time, but for those who are looking for alternatives AVID MC + Fusion, even if Generation doesn't come with the free version, I think is still the best combo at any price. If one is really serious aboout all this Fusion studio $1000 + Avid $700, still not a bad deal at all. It is far better than Premiere and After Effects. Should we use a car analogy? It's like a Porsche 911 vs Hyundai. You also get to own the Porsche, Hyundai you can only rent and they take it back as soon as you stop paying.

"IF i ever need 4k then by that time i'm sure the marketplace will have sorted itself out and they'll be clear winners and losers to choose from."

Not a serious problem with 4K. Vegas Pro 12 accepts 4K inputs. Vegas Pro 13 has render templates for 4K output.

I did frameserving from Vegas Pro 13 to Handbrake for youtube upload. I don't have a 4K camera, but I may be real close so I'm testing the workflow.

I actually have made it through DaVinci Resolve 12 with even though I'm not nearly finished reading the 1096 page manual.

I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ 1000 and record all video in 4K.

Absolutely no problem at all importing the media into VP12. No problem editing and finalising a video, and I chose to output in 1080p (the 4K gives great cropping possibilities). By adjusting a template it can render in 4K, but of course it is slow......

I'm not understanding why people think VP12, and presumably VP13, cannot handle 4K?
Chienworks wrote on 9/23/2015, 7:30 AM
Vegas 9 handles 4K. 8 might have as well, but i don't currently have it installed to check.

Now, mind you, it handles 4K resolution formats, but it may not have all the newer codec support that current 4K cameras use. That's easily taken care of though by installing the necessary codecs.

Call me delusional, but I’m not giving in to the doom and gloom yet. We’ve been asking for a total rewrite of the code for years, and also denounced the name “Vegas” as not befitting a pro editing application.

Is there a possibility that energy has been going in this direction behind the scenes at SCS for a few years, and this is the reason for slowing of development and bug fixing over the last few versions? I personally don’t believe that Catalyst itself is the next generation Sony editor, although it may share some of the same code as what’s coming.

There could be many reasons for the “secrecy” and lack of communication from SCS. Plans to discontinue Vegas and leave us hanging could be one, but development of a totally new and innovative app to seamlessly replace it could be another. So far the only “fact” I’ve seen driving this thread is a second hand account of an SCS employee saying something similar to: There will be no Vegas 14. Even if accurate, that could mean so many things.

Breathe.

Anyone buying the brand new plug in for Vegas Mercalli V4 now there wont be a Vegas 14. I bet some of these developers are scratching their heads now.
jwcarney wrote on 9/23/2015, 11:36 AM
deusx, I guess it's a matter of perspective. AE is hugely popular in the motion graphics and broadcast markets. Fusion and Nuke are more difficult to learn and many can't justify the time and expense when they already know AE. Adobe just passed 5 million subscribers. Must be doing something right.
If I end up purchasing the Ursa Mini, at least I'll get full version of Resolve included. That's a great deal.
Since I'm expanding into web/social media in addition to making independent movies, Adobe CC is the right answer at the right time for me. They even have a pretty good javascript editor (for free, as in beer) that can import photoshop files to HTML. (It's called brackets). They aren't just about video editing anymore.
Before the CC model, upgrades cost me more than the subscription. Before 2014 you couldn't pay me to use Premier and while I have it, I still use Vegas for most video/audio related tasks.
Tech Diver wrote on 9/23/2015, 11:38 AM
sging1's post is exactly the point I was trying to get across. Namely, if Vegas goes into maintenance mode, then why should any plugin producing company invest resources into a Vegas version of their product when the potential sales are highly limited? Sure you can continue to use VegasPro v13 ad infinitum, but it is often the plugins that really make a product powerful. With Boris FX's acquisition of the Mocha Tracker, It is pretty likely that we might see a close integration of it with the BCC plugin. But I have seen in the past how plugin developers has dropped platforms for which they do not get a good return on investment such as Red Giant, Boris FX plus a few others that I cannot immediately recall. Since none of the current bugs/shortcomings of Vegas interfere with my workflow, I consider the continued improvements in plugins of far greater importance than the NLE itself.

In light of this I decided to take a look at a few other NLEs over the weekend:
Lightworks
Catalyst
Prem CC

None of them handle cutting with group clips like Vegas does, i.e. common sense. You end of ungrouping/regrouping . ect. at least Catalyst does the audio cross fades like Vegas, prem and LW don't.

Catalyst
Not a big fan of the simpleton/Appletard interface. At least they already have the interfaces to Vegas and Resolve EDLs. So much functionality missing it isn't even funny. It feels like movie maker with multiple tracks.

it does not recognize cineform.avi - complete deal breaker for me.
It also does not run on my laptop due to the older card in it.
Catalyst has a loooooong way to go.

If I had to pick another now I would go with Prem, but so for Vegas still runs circles around it. So I'll stay with it as long as I can. I'm sure the situation felt similar for FC7 users. Light works seemed ok, but I would want to find a vegas EDL script for it. It may have had an issue with cineform also.

No one talks about audio when they compare NLEs, and it's roughly 75% of the work

videoITguy wrote on 9/23/2015, 3:09 PM
The Catalyst suite has not been designed to be an NLE, and it is unlikely that it will graduate to one. What Catalyst is designed for - it does quite well. Whether Sony can reap any longterm benefit of it remains to be seen. But they have interjected the company in to the pro workflows so that they NOW have name recognition with Avid, FCPX, and Premiere all cross platform. That is quite an achievement.

Nothing to do with VegasPro market!
