I know that there is a large group of Vegas users out there.
Even here in Europe I know many TV broadcasting production houses that use Vegas.
They had 20 + PC's all running Vegas on them.
I am more suprised about Avid being the least on the chart.
It may be industry standard and a traditional thing, but common and new users might find it too cumbersome to use?
Not too scientific of a poll, but there are a lot of Vegas users out there, and will continue to be with or without updates...till technology cripples it. My unscientific poll has final cut way higher than he did. Every kid that edits at all uses it ,,well maybe not every, helps that they teach it in many schools, public and private.
Both of the schools i work in are Windows-only, and both have Vegas Movie Studio and a few Vegas 5 installs scattered about. However, ask anyone there under the age of 20 about video and they all think that iMovie or FinalCut are the only way to do it. The seriously believe that there is no way to do video, music, or graphics under Windows. Sadly quite a few of the teachers seem to share that misconception.
<4th in that poll. 4TH!! I don't think they'll close it down.>
I hope that proves to be true! The biggest barrier to improved market share is Sony itself. The solution isn't rocket surgery, it's really pretty simple:
1. Improve support. Many have complained about slow support. I once had an occasion to reach out to the support team – I waited TWO WEEKS to receive a canned response that was entirely unhelpful. After a month I gave up. My issue was solved via this forum, not by Sony support.
2. Product stability. Publish a CURRENT list of known good hardware configurations and maintain an updated troubleshooting page. Many here (myself included) claim problem-free editing; with better communication others may achieve the same results.
3. Titler. This has been covered in many posts; an update is long overdue. ProType lacks the user friendliness and Vegas-like interface than many desire.
4. Media management. Not an issue for me, but others have expressed a desire for more robust media management and I can certainly see their point.
5. Marketing. The shotgun approach doesn't work. Vegas isn't for everyone, pick the groups it's well suited for and focus on what makes Vegas the best solution for them. As an example, I use Regions extensively, and when I demonstrate their use to other editors that work with long clips that may have multiple In/Out points the concept instantly makes sense to them - you can see the light bulb go off when they realize how powerful this features is.
Finally, take an active interest in your product. Participate in this forum. Publish a tip of the week. Spotlight a user. Do something. DO ANYTHING. Connect with users and let folks know the product is alive and vital.
Vegas does so many things so quickly that I got overwhelmed. I learned about maybe 2% of what it could do by just doing what I needed to do. I would probably be astounded by the other 98% of stuff. Remember when the timeline was playing with other apps it would go to the end and disappear? Not in Vegas because it reset the timeline automatically. Same with the red out of sync sound. The blue snaps.
Dual monitor operation? 16 meg pictures? Fade in/out 200 photos on the timeline in one click? Select Forge/Cinescore/Acid and others with one click? Render a quickey DVD from the timeline?

Reaper has introduced video editing features with v5. The loop editing and audio features of Vegas are what drew me to it and are the main reasons why I hope it continues.
The part that says it is better to apply FX before you chop up the events is a good tip for new editors.
I have always doen that, unless each event requires other FX.
Don't get too excited guys. I am 99% certain that the update referred to in Michael Bryant's email was build 453. videoITguy reported a nearly identical email in his post of 5/16/2015 2:03:12 AM on this thread.
I'm not having any of those problem you guys are talking about. Since moving to a Mac(Bootcamp) in 2002, we have produced over 76 episodes for syndication distribution to a overseas TV market.
Also, I do have Final Cut Pro X. However, like the man said" Vegas is the fastest NLE out here.
Interesting thread. One item discussed here was about Vegas Pro (VP) being based on old technologies and thus needing a re-write. Another point made here and elsewhere is that Catalyst Edit (CE) is written for the newer technologies, but is NOT in any way an editor comparable to VP.
Therefore, one of two things needs to happen for SonyCS to keep editors buying their products: either develop CE into a VP-level editor, or do the kinds of necessary re-writes to bring VP up to date.
Communication is valuable for companies trying to keep their customers. SonyCS fails in this area more than they need to. Vegas Pro customers are understandably wary of SCS and their potential abandonment of VP because of how SCS has behaved with Acid Pro. I don't use Acid Pro, but am well aware of the fact that SCS dropped it half a decade ago, yet I STILL receive from SCS emails urging me to by that abandoned software.
