@rtbond to clarify, the default has always been to close the files when not the active application. This is important, for example, if you need to say send an audio file to an audio editor to make an adjustment or a picture to a image editor to make some changes. The other program can just save the file and VEGAS will pick up the changes when you return to VEGAS. But, VEGAS has to close all files on losing focus and the reopen all of those files when it gains focus.

With that option unchecked, VEGAS will return faster because it has not closed and does not need to reopen all of the files. However, you can't go to another application, make some changes, and then save those changes as the file will be "locked." So it's a trade-off.

Thanks for that clarification. Curious why these defaults have recently become a noticeably performance impact on my 3-year old desktop. (rhetorical)
