You have to have a PCIE4 motherboard and compatible CPU to use PCIE4.0 features.

I don't have a pcie4 motherboard and am only addressing bare compatibility of newer boards with older pcie3 bus motherboards. For the most part, they're backward compatible meaning they'll work. But my 980x system has an Asus Rampage3 pcie3 motherboard with the latest bios and refused to boot into Win10 with a pcie4 5700xt. A Vega64 worked fine in that system but I had to upgrade the power supply. The 5700xt works fine in my other pcie3 systems so I was able to find an alternate home for it. Just something to consider for anyone hoping to turbocharge an older system with one of these newer video boards.
