Occasional tears suddenly appearing on timeline and output

shadyparadox wrote on 10/11/2019, 11:59 AM

Until recently, I've been recording screen/game capture footage using this method without any problems for quite a while. But for unrelated reasons I had to reinstall Windows, and so perhaps I'm now missing a codec or something. But since it still seems to work for the most part, and I didn't encounter this problem at any point during my previous installation of Windows, it's hard to tell.

Whatever the case, now occasionally I'm getting these disturbing tearing artifacts: at random parts of the footage. It appears consistently in both Vegas 16 and 17, in both the timelines and the rendered files, and the tears always look the same. However, the tears do NOT appear when I play the source files using MPC-HC, so I do not suspect corrupt source files.

The YouTube sample shows the most egregious tear, but that source file is large, so here's another smaller one with the same issue. About 28 seconds in, this happens:

Here's the background information:

Thanks for the link, Sylk.

Since their issue was how YouTube decoded the rendered file, it seems they had a lot more options than I do. What options do I have for Vegas to decode my original source file though?

Bandicam has plenty of history of not working well with VEGAS.

I would advise against capturing AVI with x264vfw. Will it allow you to capture x264 MP4?

Here are some OBS Studio settings that work well with VEGAS.

shadyparadox wrote on 10/12/2019, 3:33 PM

Sylk, I can switch those settings on and off all day, and no combination fixes the problem, unfortunately. The D drive is... NTFS? Is there more information I can give?

Nick, I have several hours of footage already captured for two projects that are 90% done, and have never encountered this problem until now. I'll switch to MP4 in the future, but is there any workaround or conversion I can try to get past the current obstacle? I can't exactly recapture all the footage.

I still suspect Vegas just isn't decoding since the reinstall like it used to.

NickHope wrote on 10/12/2019, 11:53 PM

Section 9 of this post lists some converters.

You should be able to do a lossless rewrap from avi to mp4. Try the ffmpeg command line in section 10 of that post, but changing "mkv" to "avi" (more detail about ffmpeg rewrapping in this post). Xmedia Recode is a GUI for ffmpeg that may make that easier for you. Happy Otter Scripts Import Assist might be able to do it, but your x264vfw format isn't specifically listed.

Can't test any of that for you I'm afraid, as my PC tells me it will take 1 day to download your file.
