Pro 16 won't load 24-bit audio from AVI file

jason-duncan wrote on 4/11/2024, 8:23 PM

Hello,

I have Pro 16 build 424. I'm capturing vhs via Black Magic, and their capture program is Media Express. Unfortunately their program doesn't allow for adjustments to audio quantization. Any capture file format option I select ends up with PCM audio of 24-bit 48k. When I load the AVI in the timeline, there is no audio. I can hear audio when I play the raw AVI in Windows Media.

I assume the problem is that it's 24-bit and not 16-bit? Even when I open a new project and select 24-bit, still doesn't load audio. Is Pro 16 not capable of recognizing 24-bit audio? I even tried to convert the AVI in VirtualDub to 16-bit to see if Vegas would then play audio, but was unsuccesful at converting.

Please don't say I'm stuck with Black Magic/Media Express with 24-bit audio which Vegas can't play? I'm getting emails everyday to upgrade to 21. Would this play PCM 24b 48k (or 96k) files?

Yep, upgrading to the most recent or latest version, should solve your 24bit audio playback issue.... Although, your description could also mean that Vegas is unable to fully decode that file format...... Give us full info and spec about these problematic files.

Can it export a 24-bit wav instead? That might load in 16.

Not sure what the AVI is, feel free to share MediaInfo or upload a sample and one of us could test it with 21.

Black Magic's Media Express has the option for various capture formats (AVI 8 & 10-bit YUV, AVI Motion JPEG, QuickTime Uncompressed 8/10-bit YUV & RGB etc). I did a 5 second cap test with all nine options. When I open MediaInfo, no matter which capture option I selected, all files contain the same audio (PCM 24b 48k).

I'll attach MediaInfo from the 10-bit YUV option (since I thought Vegas recognizes the v210 codec). The other codecs are: UYVY, r210, MJPEG, 2vuy, DVCPRO 50.

Just to recap; the AVI files load in the timeline (the QuickTime MOV's do not) but there is no audio track along with the video. I have other test AVI's that were captured via Osprey 827/e (which has the option the adjust audio quantization) and those do have an audio track when I drop in the timeline.

It seems the AVI's captured with BlackMagic are the problem, and I'm guessing it has something to do with the audio bit depth of 24.

***OK, I can't seem to attach a .txt file. Maybe my version my MediaInfo is older?

For MediaInfo please just copy all the text and paste it right into the box here.

Also, happy to test a sample of it with a newer version of VEGAS if you could prepare one for this purpose and host it on Google Drive, etc.

Thanks for the MediaInfo! I'm surprised PCM doesn't work.

For the video to be testable by us it needs to be uploaded somewhere, not to the forum which is just for viewing.

Oh, sorry (didn't realize the file wasn't downloadable). I uploaded to my Dropbox account. File name is "Untitled 02 AVI". My username is: clashradio@hotmail.com. I'm not really familiar with DB but I think I gave permission to all. Please let me know if you can access the file. This link might help as well.

Seems then that there is some form of limitation in Vegas Pro 16 regarding certain 24bits audio file.... So the bottom line is to then just upgrade to the latest Vegas version to put an end to such worries.

jason-duncan wrote on 4/12/2024, 1:47 PM

You're saying you were able to drop the AVI in your Pro 21 and it opened the audio track?

john_dennis wrote on 4/12/2024, 1:59 PM

Rewrap instantly to 16 bit PCM in Shutter Encoder and move on with your life.

I am. I have lawns to mow.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 4/12/2024, 2:05 PM

@jason-duncan Yep, drop it on my Vegas Pro 21 timeline with no issues whatsoever. Played and edit smoothly with audio track ok.

Former user wrote on 4/12/2024, 2:14 PM

@jason-duncan Just to confirm @Steve_Rhoden comment it loads perfectly fine with audio.

DMT3 wrote on 4/12/2024, 2:19 PM

Earlier versions of Vegas were not able to use 24bit wavs. I believe this was fixed with either v18 or 19. I always used an audio editor to convert.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 4/12/2024, 2:29 PM

@jason-duncan I'm away from home with only my laptop which does not have vp16 on it. But the clip loads fine on vp19, 20, and 21 which I travel with. Here's with vp21:

Notice that although it's 24-bit, that the recording level is pretty weak. Might want to recreate it anyway.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 4/12/2024, 3:14 PM

@Howard-Vigorita Yeah, the audio level is very weak, but Normalizing it on the timeline, brings it up to acceptable levels.

jason-duncan wrote on 4/12/2024, 3:54 PM

Thanks everyone for your help. I took john_dennis' advice and downloaded Shuttle Encoder and it worked! Sorry, didn't know about that program. I'll try this for now but definitely will upgrade to 21 later this year. Again, I appreciate all of your help.

No audio in Vegas Pro 18.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 4/12/2024, 5:29 PM

@mark-y That means 24bit Audio support was implemented from in Version 19.
