Senior moment. Project not reopening at last saved/closing position

diverG wrote on 2/29/2020, 1:08 PM

Project correctly opening at the start of the the last used project as per preference set up. Is it possible to open the project so that the timeline is expanded and the cursor set to the position at the time of save. Ie opening ready to continue editing. Have not used VP regularly of late and have got used to reopening an Edius project at the point of closing. I'm pretty sure Vegas behaved this way as well. Just not ticked the correct boxes.

VP14,16 & 17 currently all behaving the same way

Put a marker on the timeline "ctrl-m" at the point you want to start before closing the project.

Thanks, that's an improvement. It would be nice to open the project ready to contine working. ie expanded timeline & cursor in last used positition.

Can see why I took to Edius.

I'm able to open every project where I was working on, even if I deleted the projectfiles, because I use the "Advanced Save" option. I set these so that every 3 minutes an update of the current project is made.

@j-vThanks, that looks promising. Manual not too helpfull and does not mention 'Advanced Save' is under the Tool tab. Looks too useful to be hidden away.

"Options> Preferences> General> Automatically open last project on start-up"

diverG wrote on 3/1/2020, 4:54 AM

@rraud That is the default starting point. The last used project opens with all clips showing on the timeline and the cursor at the start. That is not what I require.

If my last working position was say half way down the timeline and the timeline expanded at that point then on closing the program via 'save changes' I would expect the program to reopen in that state.

The suggestion by 'j-v' above meets this requirement.

Maybe 'Happy Otter' could add this opening requirement to their scripts.

I've noticed that if a project has regions in it, the region I was around when I saved and closed is selected when I reopen it. Another trick I sometimes do instead of dropping a marker, if I just want to make a quick exit and reopen (to rid Vegas of occasional squirrely behavior), is to copy the cursor-position timecode before exit and paste it back on reopen. I agree it would be nice if Vegas had an option to just do that automatically.

My Vegas Edit 15 and 17 does this - see the event marked in yellow - or do I not fully understand the requirement?

diverG wrote on 3/1/2020, 4:35 PM

@walter-i. I presume you are showing a re-opened project. If so that is what I require.

In my case the cursor is always positioned at the start of the timeline t=0 and the timeline itself compressed. It would appear from the offered solutions that other users also have this as an on going problem. To date I have not found a satisfactory solution.

Vegas itself is stable and on saving work in progress it is reasonable to expect on reopening a Vegas project to replicate the exact state of closure. Is the marked event significant in the saving process or just showing how Vegas behaves with your setup? Thanks for your interest. I look forward to finding a solution.

I save and close a project, and the next time I open it (even if I have switched off the PC in between) it looks like the screenshot above: The last event that I edited is highlighted in yellow and the cursor is exactly positioned thereon.
But I don't know what exactly leads to it, or what it could prevent (except, of course, the setting that the previous project is automatically opened when it starts).
I think that this is a basic function of Vegas (I think it was introduced with Vegas 15), which cannot be changed by a setting, but only by a malfunction of a software on the PC - possibly graphics card driver?
I have GTX 1660 Super, driver 442.19 Studio

diverG wrote on 3/2/2020, 4:44 AM

Using GTX1060 with 442.19. I have tried various drivers in case that was the issue. The best solution to date is to apply a marker prior to closing and on reopening hit the keyboard '1' which takes the cursor to the marker. Not ideal but better than nothing. If this is a general problem maybe HOS can supply a solution.

I think: "If this is a general problem maybe MAGIX can supply a solution."
I appreciate HOS fully, but this seems to be a problem from some Soft- or Hardware, and should not be repaired by a plugin.

Not a hardware problem. It is simply a feature that was never implemented in VEGAS. We have had this on our list of things to implement for ages, but the priority has never risen high enough to actually get it implemented. The proper solution is for us to save the last cursor location on the timeline as part of the project file.

The good news is we are (finally) working on this and we very much hope to have a solution to this in the future. I am not promising it will be part of an update for any of the current versions, but we very much hope that we can have this done in future versions of the VEGAS products.
