Small Project Failing To Render Past 26% Bug Report/Project Included

LongIslander wrote on 11/13/2021, 12:02 PM

This small project I have put together is failing to render past 26% using Apple ProRes 4k Proxy at 59.94 FPS (best preset). I have tried unchecking hevc legacy on/off and well as dynamic ram set to 0/other values.

The workaround for me was to shut off hardware decoding on my Nvidia Card.

Hopefully this bug report will help the Magix Team isolate this issue for future users.

Additionally the software render is barely using any of my CPU. 30%. Something wonky is happening.

Thanks All.

Latest build vegas 19 👍

On my laptop I saw not your problem at 26%, but with me the project rendering tooks a lot of time. That's the reason I cannot show the whole render, but your crucial parts I show you with the latest part of my screengrab a little accelarated. Because there were a lot of Windows backgrond processes running I could at the end not normally end the project but had to end Vegas through the taskmanager

@LongIslander

Went to lunch at 65% on my machine from About Me. I replaced the .m4a audio with a .WAV file because I didn't want to mess with Quicktime at the moment.

Edit: But it did finish much later.

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 4:00 PM

Confirmed frozen, but for me it was at 21%, also confirmed turning GPU decode off allows video to render to completion

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 4:09 PM

Hi, i'm curious about this so if you don't mind i want to try it but downloading i get a RAR file

Do i need to sign in, to get the project?

LongIslander wrote on 11/13/2021, 4:46 PM

A .rar is like a .zip. Download winrar (free download) to extract the project.

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 4:48 PM

@LongIslander 👍 had that on my old PC but never used it so didn't put it on this one, i'll get back to you.

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 5:04 PM

It's building Video Proxies, 😂 don't think i've ever loaded anything that makes it do that, i normally work in 4k 3840 x2160 😮

LongIslander wrote on 11/13/2021, 5:14 PM

Lol yes. You can turn that off in preferences before opening the project to cancel the "auto proxies". This footage is 5k 60p 👍

glad we have other people here confirming the render failure. Vegas team should be able to isolate it.

john_dennis wrote on 11/13/2021, 5:36 PM

@Former user

If the option is turned on, the threshold for triggering auto proxy creation is controlled by an Internal setting:

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 5:38 PM

@LongIslander Is it only 2.30mins long?

I left it doing the Proxies, it would only play full fps speed at Preview Full

Is this the render template you used?

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 6:01 PM

I haven't rendered yet because i'm not sure which format you used but

the project is 9036 frames long, 2259 is roughly 26% into the project, your media changes through a crossfade from Landscape to portrait, i wonder if rendering just that event at 16:9 would help the transition, it'd have black bars down either side but..

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 6:33 PM

Yeah it really slowed during that portrait clip, 26% - 28%,

@Former user that clip you showed has it rendering @ 35fps ? Avg on mine is 14fps-ish, the Current is 45-55fps-ish tho, 🤷‍♂️

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 6:53 PM

@Former user I never got to most of the long transitions to cause the slow down, stopped at 21% which is the start of one of them , you can see the decoder spike when it begins to process the 2 clips, then it looks to stop decoding. Also his project is in regular 16:9 not DCI, so I suspect he encoded in 3840x2160

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 6:53 PM

crashed at 65% Chrome & everything else was turned off, there were some more portrait clips from about 50% & it slowed down a little but seemed to handle them ok,

@Former user Ah, i was at 4096x2160, i couldn't see on your vid the 3840 bit, gonna try again

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 7:19 PM

It crashed at this point if my maths is correct, 9036 frames ÷ 20 = 451.8, that's 1/20th of the timeline, 451.8 x 13 to get 65% = 5873.4, in the pic of the crash above & where 5873.4 lands on the timeline the media transitions but it is very similar to the previous clip (dark in the church) 🤫, When i've rendered pics inc in my project that are very similar Vegas gets messed up, the final export has them flickering or totally in the wrong place, I've also stopped using HEVC files, i haven't had much luck with those so i stick to AVC.

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 7:58 PM

Tried it at Apple ProRes 3840x2160 59.94 FPS (best), similar performance, stalled 26%-28%, then crashed at 35% 🤷‍♂️

LongIslander wrote on 11/13/2021, 8:01 PM

Thanks Gid. Clear now this is not a hardware issue.

Glad you got a kick out my niece in the church. 😂🤫

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 8:30 PM

👍 cute little monkey 👍

No prob, for me it's a learning exercise, comparing to others results & maybe finding a solution, for me & you.

I tried this a few times, not much luck,

I had this project on my C drive, it just happened to be an empty folder on my desktop, i just moved it to my other drive where i normally keep my media (software only on my C drive normally)

This may be 5k but it's a fairly simple short project, no special fx, one sound track, but Vegas won't even play it at a decent resolution without creating proxies, i get very frustrated with that, esp with the specs & price of my PC,

Creating proxies at the moment so i can just get it to play, 🤦‍♂️😒

you say 'barely using any of my CPU. 30%', I agree, in anything Vegas does it rarely gets above that,

this is it right now creating proxies & some of that CPU & RAM will be Chrome being open

Former user wrote on 11/13/2021, 9:57 PM

Hi, had to play, so i selected the area at 26%, the two portrait clips, Vegas really struggled just to export that little bit selected.

so i dragged them apart & rendered them individually at Apple ProRes 3840x2160 59.94 FPS (best),

It took a little thinking but it did it, I then re-imported those clips & put the project back together (i made a note of the crossfade before 😁)

It then rendered that whole selection at a steady constant rate.

I don't have a media player that will play 5k, both VLC Player & Windows says no 🤷‍♂️😂

I've inc the short clip below but don't know if it will load,

I think what you'll have to do, what i've read on here a 1000 times, is export/render/convert each clip before creating your project, or do as i've done, render individually & rebuild your project.

Former user wrote on 11/14/2021, 2:04 AM

@LongIslander just reading this, don't know if it's any use to you with 5k.

Can you post the MediaInfo for the media causing the problem? I'm seeing other reports of issues with media NVIDIA cards don't seem to like. Is it variable frame rate?

It's not the media it's another Vegas HEVC decoder bug, The problem file at 26% is GX010087.MP4 It is HEVC rotated -90 degrees in media properties, it is the combination of those 2 factors causing failure, The same file not rotated does not fail. When this file is re-encoded to HEVC (not re-wrapped) with ShutterEncoder Vegas fails also. If I re-encode file to H.264 and rotate Vegas does not fail. Decoder off causes no failure @RogerS
