[SOLVED] V17 not loading video track of .mov file

MikeLV wrote on 2/3/2024, 4:10 PM

I tried to open this file on the timeline, and the audio is there, but the video is just black. Did some searches and seems others had trouble with this kind of file, but not sure of the fix? Thank you

Ok so that's the problem, it won't open the video because of DolbyVision? Is there a solution so that I can open the video in Vegas?

I took a chance on this site https://www.online-convert.com/ and converted the mov to mp4. The resultant MP4 is about half the size of the original mov file, and the quality appears to be the same, and it opens fine in Vegas now.

@MikeLV It's probably as @mark-y explains but I recall seeing the behavior you describe with Win10 versions needing an install of the Microsoft Hevc Oem-codec extensions. I have 2 different versions of the extension in this folder that you can try depending on how old your win10 is; v40614 is for 20h2 or later:

Getting OT, but @mark-y could you please clarify. My understanding is that Vegas uses Windows components to handle AC3 2 channel but cannot handle 5 channel? My AVCHD 50i camera shoots mts files with Dolby AC3 as below:

These mts files open without problem with VMS17 Platinum but you have me worried that when I update to VP21 they may not open. I'm unable to check myself with a download trial as my current pc, overdue for replacement, hasn't high enough specs for VP21.

The video format here is newer than your editing software (HEVC with HLG).

It should open as regular HLG in newer versions of VEGAS (believe 19+) but won't look the same as it did on the phone/Mac as VEGAS doesn't read DolbyVision metadata. I'd recommend not recording as DolbyVision HDR or using Apple software that is fully compatible with it instead of VEGAS if you really want this type of file.

Custom PC (2022) Intel i5-13600K with UHD 770 iGPU with latest driver, MSI z690 Tomahawk motherboard, 64GB Corsair DDR5 5200 ram, NVIDIA 2080 Super (8GB) with latest studio driver, 2TB Hynix P41 SSD, Windows 11 Pro 64 bit

Dell XPS 15 laptop (2017) 32GB ram, NVIDIA 1050 (4GB) with latest studio driver, Intel i7-7700HQ with Intel 630 iGPU (latest available driver), dual internal SSD (1TB; 1TB), Windows 10 64 bit

VEGAS Pro 20.411
VEGAS Pro 21.208

Try the
VEGAS 4K "sample project" benchmark (works with VP 16+): https://forms.gle/ypyrrbUghEiaf2aC7
VEGAS Pro 20 "Ad" benchmark (works with VP 20+): https://forms.gle/eErJTR87K2bbJc4Q7

@EricLNZ

Dolby and Vegas / Magix are not on such good terms any more.

Dolby AC3 Pro and Studio versions were licensed in Sony Vegas, but that agreement ended with VP14 I think. Vegas was diverted to other solutions for AC3 encoding / decoding.

DolbyVision, a proprietary HDR video format with dynamic chroma metadata, has never been supported in Vegas, but as of a few years ago, would open in Vegas, but with absolutely horrid yellow biases because the metadata doesn't have a licensed decoder.

That's about all I know, really, I haven't read anything definitive since @VEGASDerek's comment here:
