DVCPRO-HD, I posted this in the wrong place... woops. Like I said outside. DVCPRO-HD, without it I want to go broke just to own MAC and FCP. I won't update vegas without this, it just doesn't make sense to.

Here's a couple of tiny little features that would be nice.

1 Right clicking the Solo or Mute button gives you options of Solo ALL and Solo None

2 An option to be able to scroll through Active compositing modes either with the arrow keys or the mouse wheel. So if I want to see what the composite looks like in Darken or Difference, I can easily switch between them.
BrianStanding wrote on 11/7/2005, 12:06 PM
Oh, yeah almost forgot...

Both of these are features that have been in Sound Forge for a long time. I'd love to see them ported to Vegas as well

1. A more interactive "Edit Details" window that allows you to select regions, markers, etc. in addition to just "events." Click on the window and the region is automatically selected on the timeline.

2. A "cut-list" that would allow you to preview cuts out of the timeline without actually deleting anything. Later, you can batch delete (and ripple, if set to do so) all cuts at once. Also a keyboard shortcut that does the equivalent of "ctrl-k" in Sound Forge, allowing you to preview a cut as if the cut had already happened.

Ulead Smart Compositor ???

Vegas 6 and VASST = more superior than Ulead SMART COMPOSITOR.

There are many free project files created by Vegas professionals all over the world on the VASST website ( www.vasst.com) and Vegas 6 project nesting feature. Vegas has the "ADD AS TAKE" function.

Please fix the basic editor this time Sony. I haven't "upgraded" since Vegas 4 because of this. No more bells and whistles please. Fix the basic editor.

I second this comment/observation whole-heartedly. I don't know how many of these kinds of threads I've read (I usually don't get involved). Earlier in this thread, Winrock asked for "stable editing." Craftech has reiterated the plea. That--stability--should be at the foundation of this application! Regardless of all the "bells and whistles," stability should be the NUMBER ONE PRIORITY for guys and gals in Madison.

The vast majority of these "wishes" are just that. They have little to do with real editing. Out of all these "wishes" how many of them actually make the final edited piece any better? How many was that...? Easier, maybe. Better? I seriously doubt it. How many of them have made Vegas a better editor? (uh-huh)

For some unknown reason we have become a generation that is stupidly enamored with "bells and whistles"--all glitz and little or no substance--and to what end? Does Vegas 6 have more "bells and whistles" than Version 3 (where I came in)? Most definitely! Does Vegas 6 work better than Version 3? No, not really, not from my experience.

For example, let's look at the history of physical film editing (where I started). "In the beginning" there were scissors and glue. That was it! Then, in mid-1920s, the Moviola was invented. What a revolution--an improvment! Yes, there were refinements along the way, but for the most part the upright Moviola was the same machine for decades.

The next big change came in the way of the flatbed editor. In the early 1970s the Steenbeck and KEM flatbed editors began to creep into the editing suites in Hollywood. The flatbed editor offered the introduction of multiple sound tracks (up to three) and multiple picture heads (up to three). Where the older upright Moviola could only show one ten-minute picture reel with ten minutes of mag tape for sound, the new flatbeds could show twenty minutes of film and sound at a time and many times faster! Most of all, these new systems were just as stable and dependable as the original Moviola workhorse!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against progress. Progress is good. However, the introduction of "bells and whistles" that diminish the stability and dependability of the system are, in my opinion, worthless.

Any "change" or addition that is introduced to Vegas should make it better, not just different. Second, any change or addition that is introduced certainly should not make it less stable, as we have seen. And third, and perhaps most importantly, the powers that be should go back and FIX the bugs that have been there version after version after version! For that to continue is simply inexcusable.

Ever since 6.0c and the installation of 4 gig of Kingston memory and not using the media manager and using standalone Cineform I have been running kind of like a Sherman tank, blasting through everything. I love the way the ripple edit works, the out of sync operation, some of the Wax stuff, some of the Ultimate S stuff, simultaneous LCD & TV feed from the firewire operation of the Canopus 300, the lock & unlock sync icon. never ever having a sound sync problem, Forge access for major corrections, normalization in the switches, burning dual layer & 5.1, and with the default settings can play all day with a complex project without the low on memory dingus flashing. I don't like the quantize to frames thing which I have to use sometimes to get a good clip connection. Haven't had any black frames or blank frames. Some of that occurrs when you accidentally squeeze a clip down to nothing. The residue is always one frame lurking about. Easy to do in ripple edit. Should be something blinking on the timeline saying you squashed a clip with a marker pointing to same and saying do you want to observe this expanded on another track before you eliminate it? I have noticed on capture that if your camera sound heads are dirty you will get the dreaded blanks in the sound and this is the only time I have ever seen them. I am happy with the rendering speed with DV since adding the AMD 4600+. The HDV rendering is slower but it's not busting my lower anatomy. It would be nice if they built in the Ulead Cool 3d thing or something similar. The credit roll has always been pretty clunky which was never as good even as the old Premier 5.0.
I really didn't want to learn a new app like Boris but then again maybe I should. I like the idea of the eyedropper white color selection of one clip applied to other clips or a switch saying to set all colors to clip white and/or true white correction. It would be also nice to have the ripple edit indicate if a small sound or video clip would light up if it would not be included in the movement as soon as you would left click the segment you are going to move then without moving you could ctrl the ones you desire to move with the main bang.

johnmeyer,

Very well thought out suggestions... I especially identify with your photo rendering and video cleanup suggestions.

I would really like to photo rendering taken to the next level, and include the ability to create the "kid stays in the picture" technique that is now showing up in lots of commercials. Currently, this would require lots of tedious keyframing and masking in Vegas.

I would like the ability to set up a queue of 'vegs' and have them rendered one after the other, say overnight or while I'm off doing something else.

This would require the user to set up some parameters at the start eg directory to render to, output file type, quality etc.

I know there are scripts out there to do this, but it would be nice if it was part of Vegas itself.

Can't we have "Bells 'n Whistles" and stability? Are these things so mutually exclusive? - For this not to be I guess that would demand much of Madison and its Beta testers. Now that's something to ponder over.

I like being part of a product that is always got its eye on the future and responds to Users wishes. That is ONE of the reasons I'm here. I got hooked/converted to VF years back - now I'm a complete Vegas VegHead! Hey, I've said it - When do I get the T shirt?

However, I really want my Media Manager back - Vegas Explorer just doesn't cut it anymore! Having heard the "Bells" I'm blowing my "Whistle" and wanting it - Media Manager - back, please Madison . . . ?

A bit of an odd request, but something that Propellerhead Reason does very well:

Hold SHIFT while moving knobs / sliders, to move in slow small tiny detail.
BrianStanding wrote on 11/9/2005, 8:18 AM
Try using the "Ctrl" key instead of the "Shift" key....

Hey Grazie, what was the main differences between Media Manager and VegExplorer? Just so I know a little about it... 0_0
Do you think they could easily implement a storyboard option, linked to the Timeline so when we move scenes, the same happens on the Timeline? Could be so much quicker than moving events as I do now...
Grazie wrote on 11/9/2005, 10:32 AM
FuTZ:

" . .Media Manager and VegExplorer?" MM shows Thumbnails of Video . VegExp don't. You can visually search and group those searches as a tag bunch of stuff .. er . . oh yeah ,. . you can Scrub an event within MM .. to do this from VegExp you have to peview the whole clip OR send to t/l OR Trimmer. It is now a MONTH since I've been able to use MM that my memory is going .. . "Hello Dave! You don't want to do that Dave. I'm HAL 2000 - Mary had a little lamb .. "

"Do you think they could easily implement a storyboard option, . . " hmmm... now that WOULD be neat! I was using INSPIRATIONS to drag thumbbies from MM to INsp. that was real neat!

Grazie

Thanks Grazie for precisions.
I'll cross my fingers. Don't use 3D options, basically fades and cuts. Titles (flat ones) on the image (most of these done in PhotoShop and dropped on timeline (more fonts this way). The only thing I've been missing is this storyboard thingy. So I'd be seconding on these preceding posts about "rock solid" editing soft rather than bells'n'whistles.
That would be the third time I wish for this s/board with V7... and know I'm not alone (remember a lady asking for this on this forum).

Time will tell... until then, still using V5

"Try using the CTRL key..."

I see why I never noticed it... I use a Wacom tablet with absolute positioning, holding CTRL has no effect on the tablet, but it does slow down the mouse. Hmmm...

You know what I'd like to see? Something that really doesn't have anything to do with any extra damn editing features that I'm not going to use anyway... a clock! When I say clock, I mean a running-time counter of hours worked on a project. I'd like to be able to check the properties of a project at see a little counter that indicates how much of my life I've wasted away on it, in hours. I'm sure it would be a piece of cake to implement, and would provide valuable info.

I'm not sure of the best way to "trigger" the clock though. Should it count:
1) when the project is open
2) when the project is open and vegas is the active application
3) when the project is open, vegas is active app, and up until a default inactivity timer, say 5 minutes of no mouse movement, so you could walk away and get some coffee and the timer would still be accurate?
4) other

I guess I'd vote for option 3.

You know that little box that you now get in the middle of a transition that tells you how long the transition is?

Well I would like a similar little box to pop up in the middle of an event while I am dragging either end of it so I immediately know how long it is.
