time for those Vegas 7 wishes...

I have just 2:

1) Make the nested VEG files more stable. I crash when rendering a long 1 1/2 hour program consisting of several complex nested VEG files. Either that, or ditch the whole idea of nesting VEG files and make tabed timelines.

2) A button on the track header to change each tracks view style independantly. I'd like to turn some thumnails off on some tracks and leave them on others. Also add another option to show thumbnail of first and last frame a'la FCP.

The 2nd one seems simple enough to implement. Is there really a Vegas 7 around the corner.

EDIT and oh one more: The "new" rendering engine that utilizes 99% of the cpu process doesn't have a proportioinate amount of performance gain. Not enough to cripple my computer while a render is occuring. I used to be able to render a piec in one instance of Vegas and open up a second instance and continue editing. Now it's crawls due to the fact the CPU is being stressed very hard.

GmElliot: Thumbnails: I'm totally with you and, on top of the "first" and "last" frame option, I'd say we could be able to drag where we want and chose the exact pic we want for that tumbnail (ie the most "relevant" to us).
... which could be the same thumbnail used in the "storyboard function"...

And NickHope: how many times I've wanted this too !!!
: )

:) "Shotdown computer when Render finished" option!!!
Better - choose between shotdown and hibernate.

Ability to set the screen position of Vegas-related popup windows so they don't appear across the join in a dual-screen environment.

- Mixer: add VU meters to go with the peak meters on the Mixer, as in Sound Forge.

- Volume plug-in: Improve the Volume plug-in by allowing up to +25dB gain, and make the slider work like other Vegas sliders (double-click reset, mouse wheel click = 1dB, etc)

- provide a keyboard-assignable commands (and keyboard shortcuts) for 1) Zoom Selection, 2) Set selection to view, 3) Select Region (the region the cursor is currently in), and 4) Zoom Region.

- ability to adjust marker position from keyboard, such as with arrow keys.

- Media Manager: add a check-box for "Show all matching items" under the Search Results list, so we don't have to re-click it after every action.

- Media Manager: provide a quicker method to update media paths when media files are moved or renamed, such as a dialog to replace path x with path y, or a specific "move media" function that would allow media and/or folders to be moved or renamed within Media Manager.

- Command and Short-cut key to open still image event in external image editor...such as Photoshop. This would be just like ctrl-E opens an audio event in external sound editor...Sound Forge.

- Allow bus tracks and assignable-effects tracks to be freely positioned among the regular tracks in track view (rather than only appearing in the bus tracks sub-window). This would also allow needed flexibility when using the Mackie Controller--bus faders could be positioned among regular track faders.

- Mackie Controller support: allow Flip button in Inserts/Plug-in control "PE" mode, so faders can be used to adjust plug-in parameters. (The v-pots are not effective for some types of plug-in parameters)

- Normalize switch: allow an event to be normalized to a reference RMS level, as in Sound Forge. The reference RMS level could be specified in preferences, if not possible to specify it individually on each event. Include option to limit peaks the way Sound Forge normalize does.

- Add an "opacity" control on audio events, to enable an event which lies on top of another event to be "mixed" with the underlying event, rather than only replacing the underlying event.

- Preferences>Keyboard: allow Current key bindings list to be sorted by command, as well as by key-name.

Normally your graphics driver has settings to try to control this but you're right that Vegas and all other apps should be a bit more aware of dual screen setups. It's not very well handled by most of the applications I use, not just Vegas. (in fact, Vegas does a much better job than most but I dont use it spanning both screens. maybe my dual screen drivers are doing their job...)

Good stable editing .no 3d stuff AE stuff.
I think i am in the minority on this one,, so how about splitting Vegas to an editing program, then add an after effects sort of deal. So for those who dont want the 3d stuff have a good ,solid, fast app.
One program CANT do it all, what happens is they end up doing many things half a@@
Just a thought.

You just reminded me of a feature I like in Media100. You can set a zoom-in and zoom-out level and then use keyboard shortcuts to toggle between the two. This way you have two zoom levels that are always consistant.

If not this exact feature then how about some feedback about your zoom level somewhere in the interface. Maybe just a sense of scale like "x seconds/ 100 pixels". Not worded like that but probably more like "x seconds" or "x frames" with the rest being assumed.

I totally agree. It's just hard to sell an application when your only claim is that it now works perfectly.

There are other programs I rely on that really do get worse every rev. Vegas isn't really one of them.

Does anybody else miss the paths and user-selectable backgrounds in Track Motion?
I really miss being able to have a dark black background in Track Motion like we had in earlier revs. As I'm working with small areas, it's often hard to see which is in and which is out of safe area in the TM dialog.

That's the timeline isn't it - showing time increments above the track view?
rmack350 wrote on 11/13/2005, 12:03 PM
Yes and no. The amount of thinking you have to do to look at two readings on the timeline and judge the level of zoom you're at based on the difference between the two makes the process kind of slow. I know that a lot of editors have trained themselves to do this over the course of a few years of experience but this isn't very good for new users.

But the point is a good one and perhaps the info should be a calculation of the space between time readings, just to connect the idea to the timeline ruler and help guide people to watching the ruler.

I'd just like to see it summarized in the status bar in 16 characters or less.

Oh, yeah... here's another one:

The ability to import delimited text files into the batch capture list of the Video Capture applet. This would make it easier to import batchlists created in Scenalyzer, Premiere or other video capture applications.

1. More than 99 numbered Markers.

2. Automatic audio leveler - something that will smooth out those occasional clips without having to lower the entire track or add an envelope.

Already built in. Called a compressor, and is found on every audio track in Vegas by default.

-Text (Med Gen): check box to give option of ditching "sample text" text forever.
Memory on settings (check box too?): if I have size 26/verdana, it stays this way 'til I change it. Instead of giving me this size 72 every time.
-Media Gen window: being able to put the order we want with the items. I'd put Text first, Test Pattern second, etc... Plus: if we modify in workspace 1, it will stay as is without affecting workspace 2-3-etc so every workspace is personnalized for every kind of job each worspace was assigned in workflow.
-Metronome: ON TOP of GUI, with slider for tempo plus box if we prefer typing numbers. There's already a Preview slider, why not put it on top of meters?

Ability to increase audio gain using the envelope at event level as well as track level.

My feature requests:

-Stability! :)

-Similar to what John Meyer is saying, it would be nice to see Vegas win in the marketplace, because it has a lot of nice things over the other editing programs.

- Capture: It would be nice for a capture utility to speed up the capturing and logging process. Less button pushing, less jogging/shuttling, help me take my notes.

For DV workflows (where you just capture the whole tape in one shot and it breaks scenes up for you), there should be a clear indicator of the current shot # to facilitate taking paper notes. I want my notes' shots to correspond to the shots in Vegas.
Better yet, there should be a way to log the shots on the fly on computer instead of on paper.

For log and capture workflows, I would like some way that minimizes jogging/shuttling. Ideally you want to sit there watching the tape in real-time and entering in notes (and markers). If I miss something (i.e. distracted while typing a note), there should be a button to go back in ~5s increments to catch what you missed while you were busy taking notes (hit the button multiple times to go back a greater length of time).
i.e. Have the tape play back in real-time.
You hit enter to set in point (as the tape is playing), you type in your notes, hit some key to set a marker, hit enter to set out point.
Be able to delete logged clips on the fly (as the utility is capturing), for all the shots you realize are not useful.

- Everyone needs to do titles. An easy way to generate good-looking titles would be nice.
A quick easy way to add in cool backgrounds (i.e. Jumpbacks) would be nice. Ideally it takes minimal effort to get a nice looking title.

The titler in Vegas is just ok.

- Intuitiveness / Education
Knowing how to use the program is a big asset. Useful tools like split and slip edit should be more obvious.

Maybe tutorials on common things would be nice. i.e. a tutorial or suggested workflow for cutting a project together.
How to adjust levels and adding a compressor/limiter to mix your audio nice and quick.
How to use takes for editing drama and music videos.

Those who have learned Final Cut or Avid first may have a really hard time getting into Vegas because it's quite different and some of the tools and features aren't obvious.

ie. if i enter 12515 on the number pad it turns into 1:25:15, not bloody frames!!!!
Typing in a period at the end will make Vegas enter in seconds.
12515.
-2. will subtract 2 seconds.
It would be cool if this were documented better... lots of useful things in Vegas isn't documented well, especially split and slip editing.

This should be the first step in making Vegas more popular, and it would reduce support calls, and generate better Word Of Mouth, all for a very modest investment comparatively.

The Vegas manuals are worthless!!!

1) Nonlinear audio waveforms.
2) Audio 'scope'
3) One-click white balance
4) Track groups. (I understand that there's something like this in Sound Forge or Acid?
