V16 crashes at use of 4K video footage in Trimmer

walter-born wrote on 10/31/2018, 12:01 PM

I knew my Win10 Pc was not the fastest, so I bought new one based on, for me, highend stuff:
Ryzen 2950X 16 core
32Gb fast memory
GTX1080 video
2TB SSD
4K Monitor
Clean install of Win10
Moved the license on the new computer in the hope that finally the Trimmer would be capable of handling 4K video enabling me to cut 4K.
No way! Moving the trimmer cursor result in the same "rattling" images as before and on top Vegas freezes almost every time. Only way is a hard reset of the computer.... then restart, retry, same result again and again.
Do I need to mention that I am more than angry after spending almost 1000EUR on the software plus upgrades and another almost 4000 on a new computer?
So am I just stupid or are these known issues to convince people to move away from Vegas?

Never heard of this before. Been able to use trimmer with 4k material since Vegas 14 (at least.)

Go to the FAQ page and then report ALL your details as specified (especially you footage details.) Likely this can be fixed.

Never heard? Maybe use search function of this forum. It is full of complaints about this and no reactions or solutions. Will collect more data tommorrow. Meanwhile attached a screenshot of mainly the same problem described...

+1 @Kinvermark

Well, I have almost the same "type" of setup, and don't see the issue.

1. Specs in my signature

2. My 4K footage comes from GoPro Hero(s) 5 & 6 Black. They play on the timeline, but trying to scrub, not so much. If I "transcode" them in DaVinci Resolve 15 Basic to DNxHR, then bring that to the timeline, Awesome!

3. Seeing the comment post from "ion-marin", he is asking about using "PROXIES" in the trimmer, which you did not.

So, as kinvermark, and others who may "chime-in", there is a FAQ page that tells you what to post within the forum for the "UNPAID VOLUNTEERS" to assist in possible solutions for your issue. Oh, and just since it seems that "a lot of people that visit here" can complain and do not seem to "have the time" to do any searching, here's a quick brief on my computer:

1950x, MSI Gaming Pro Carbon AC, 64GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666 MHz, Gigabyte GTX 1080, OS/Apps on Intel 750 PCI-e 800GB, Source media Samsung 960 EVO 1TB PCI-e, two Samsung 850 EVO SSD 500 GB for LR/PS and Media Assets, 1 WD Red 2TB for renders, 1 WD Red 2TB for various, 1 WD Black 4TB for backups and other uses, home-built server using old Microsoft Home Server 2011 on X99 platform with over 32TB total.

Oh, and if BruceUSA happens to "Drop In", he's got about the same type of setup, though he's got that cool AMD Radeon Founder's Edition card (wish I could find one cheap!). He doesn't seem to have any problems. So if you search for him and his posts, he actually shows "RESULTS".

Wow, tough crowd. :)

I did do a quick search before posting... the one you are referencing says "smoothly" not CRASHES. To me, that is not the same.

So, as I said Go to the FAQ page and then report ALL your details as specified (especially your footage details.) if you are serious about getting this solved.

FYI, been testing trimmer scrubbing with gh5 UHD footage and cineform transcodes... all works totally fine with Vegas 16.

walter-born wrote on 10/31/2018, 11:44 PM

So here the probably complete information.
Hope I didn´t forget something from the FAQ List :)
PC details you have in the signature.
Rest here as screenshots. Sorry for being german language.
Footage is Mavic Air standard automatic settings.
I also started a comparison on both machines with the same footage.
Scrubbing in Trimmer is slightly better on the new machine, compared to the old one which is i7-3770, 3,4Mhz 4core but far from being as fluid as preview window even without proxy in original size.
Rendering though is much faster. Almost 3 minutes on the old machine and under 10 seconds on the new.
This morning no freezing, no idea why...

Will post screenshots in separate message.

In the meantime is it any better if you disable so4compoundplug?

OK, so re-enable So4.

I have a variety of DJI footage for testing but none quite like your format. So the next thing would be to please share one or more sample files (on a cloud service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, mega.nz, wetransfer.com or mediafire.com) for users here to test on their systems and to link the Vegas developers to.

Or you could find some sample Mavic Air sample footage that is already online that has this problem and share the links.

I got it 3rd time from WeTransfer. I guess the guys at True Internet here in Bangkok soldered a wire back together.

Firstly the file plays smoothly for me at 29.97 at "Best (full)". It can take a couple of seconds for the reading below the preview window to reach a stable 29.97.

In the trimmer the playback is also smooth but the trimming operations are quite "clunky". I didn't get any freezes or crashes. I never use the trimmer personally but I messed about with your file quite a lot and I think it's useable.

My full system specs are in my profile and I have GPU acceleration turned off in my Video Preferences.

I'm guessing your NVIDIA card might be the problem. Try turning GPU acceleration off, if not already.
