Switched GPU off, put a file in the trimmer and freeze...hard reset...

What does "freeze...hard reset..." mean exactly?

walter-born wrote on 11/1/2018, 6:07 AM

It means that I put the file in the trimmer, move the mouse just a few mm trying to press start, and the system freezes. No reaction whatsoever, not even taskmanager comes up. So hard reset computer by switching it off by hardware switch.

This is what I mean:

This?

Well I compare this with what I have tried on an iMac with only 8core procesor and apple soft. As well even on my Ipad Pro V1 with imovie scrubbing through any movie file is smooth. So I thought that buying a machine with the given data and even better would make Vegas perfom the same way, which it doesn´t.

There's an FAQ post on stability here. It's worth looking through. A lot of it won't affect your case but a few points might.

Ultimately you might need to transcode your footage to an all-intra more editing-friendly format like XAVC Intra. You could do that in Vegas, either manually one-by-one or using a script or Vegasaur, or you might be able to do it in the free Sony Catalyst Browse software (I'm very slowly downloading the current version to try it)

Another option would be to use proxies, which are mentioned in point #9 of this post. The whole post is worth reading through, to check you're getting the most out of your system.

Unfortunately decoding performance of long-GOP formats is generally not Vegas' strong point these days.

I'm guessing your NVIDIA card might be the problem. Try turning GPU acceleration off, if not already.

@ Nick
What might be the reason to advice this?
The video's I showed in this topic were made by
1. Starting VPro 16 with my NVidia
2. Using the NVidia for hardware acceleration

3. Rendering with good help of the NVidia

and 4. Using the NVENC option of the NVidia to screencapture all with OBS

What could be wrong with a new Nvidia using in Vpro 16?

Things are getting worse, now Vegas crashed several times in a row.
After downloading and installing a 2 weeks newer Graphics driver
After trying to set some of Nicks proposed links.
Now Vegas won´t even start and says I have no license.

Ok then, what software is the alternative? I am not really willing to fiddle around in a clean and new installation for days just to be able to use a paid software that on a slower/older machine seemingly did not work as bad as on this new one. I guess we all have some work to do as well, not just trying to conquer not uptodate pieces of software. And buying addons on top that make footage "edible" for Vegas. Every crash of this reminds me of a video package from I guess almost 20 years ago, wasn´t that Pinnacle, that didn´t work on most computers?

@j-v Walter has a different model of NVIDIA GPU to yours, and his driver version may well be different too. Something is causing his system to freeze when he uses the trimmer. The GPU might be the problem. It often is. But I'm glad yours is working for you. You have any other suggestions for the cause?

This is one

It seems lie, but here the Vegas Pro 16 build 307 reproduced the file seamlessly on an old Core i5 with 8gb of RAM and only with the integrated graphics card using the so4compoundplug encoder.

Both Timeline and Trimmer playback was normal.

I believe that this time the problem is not Vegas.

I would try disabling the GPU in preferences to see how the performance gets.

Yes Nick, I download Resolve already, installed and guess what, shows the same habits except crashing. I am now installing a different Magix trial, before I completely erase everything and setup the pc from zero, means WIn10 installation anew. Must be something wrong with this computer

Newest hint from a computer dealer is that the components I bought (especially mainboard and procesor)are so new, that there might be still problems with windows integration. Actually within the last hour I had multiple crashes with other software as well. So I am now reinstalling windows...

I would also check the hardware. I am building PCs for almost 30 years and this may well be a hardware issue. I would check the CPU socket, make sure no bend pins and that the CPU side is clean too, check for thermal paste. Re-seat the RAM modules and GPU. It may also be good to check the RAM speed you set in the bios. I believe the 2xxx is limited to DDR4-2933 and you shouldn't go over it.

Will check those in the morning. Only the cpu has no pins, just flat contact surfaces, no idea how those are called. Ryzen2950X. You think the sniper RAM does not fit?

yes, CPU doesn't have pins like in the old days but the socket has. I would have to check on the ram chip but it's always good to check the bios and see if the settings match the CPU and the ram chips.

So far everything is on this one SSD or on my NAS. Once the system is running I will move more HD´s in that machine. I am still working on the old one meanwhile.

Walter,

Based on your UEFI screenshot for the memory placement, according to your manual, move the DRAM in slot DIMMA2 to DIMMD2. Here's a capture from the manual.

Also, as "OldSmoke" has pointed out, need to get a source media drive. You may be using an SSD for everything, and even with Windows 10 allocating resources, memory, disk I/O operations, virtual memory, etc.; you are really pushing the limits of that SSD, even if it is a 2TB model. But first, move that DIMM before you start doing any other "tinkering".
