Vegas 18 keeps Crashing on me. Please help.

I upgraded to Vegas Pro 18 Suite from Sony Vegas Pro 9. V18 looks awesome and I am loving the new dark interface. But I am very disappointed that it crashes every few minutes when I playback the timeline! I am running Sony Vegas Pro 9 on the same computer and it doesn't crash at all. Does anyone know why V18 crashes a lot and is it fixable?

My computer is brand new from MainGear:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X - 32 Cores
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
  • Motherboard: ASUS TRX40 ROG Zenith II Extreme Alpha
  • RAM: 64GB HyperX Predator DDR4 3600MHz
  • Drive C: 1TB WD_Black SN850 Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD
  • Drive D: 1TB WD_Black SN850 Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD
  • Drive E: 4TB SAMSUNG 860 PRO Series SSD
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro

Others on the forum have noted recently that the RTX 3080 isn't fully supported as yet in Vegas Pro 18, so try turning off GPU in Options/Preferences/GPU Acceleration ...... not great but it might help.

I was using standard MP4 video files that run fine in V9. Thank you for your time but I don't have time for troubleshooting and I went back to Sony Vegas 9.

@True-H
What a pity

For your information:
There is no standard MP4 - MP4 is a wrapper, and it can contain many different codecs.
MediaInfo would provide good information to help you out

Hi walter-i

If the video file works fine with older version of Vegas then this by default means that it will work with newer version of Vegas. This is the case with any software.

@True-H That actually isn't necessarily the case. Over the years licenses Vegas has to use third-party codecs have lapsed, Apple dropped support for Quicktime on Windows, Vegas has moved to new decoders that leverage modern GPUs for performance increases, certain codecs were never updated for 64-bit architectures and abandoned, etc. The world does move on.

You can restore previous Vegas functionality by enabling legacy AVC decoding in some cases and enabled Quicktime in deprecated features. Update your GPU to the latest NVIDIA Studio drivers for compatibility.

Standard AVC/h.264 media continues to function normally in Vegas.

If you want specific advice, give the details J-v asked for.
