VEGAS Pro 18 Update 4 (Build 482) - General Discussion

Comments

AlanH wrote on 3/17/2021, 6:10 PM

Following up on the earlier comments on AMD GPU...

What has happened? My rig with 8GB AMD WX5100 was flying along, rendering MP4s at 80-100fps.

Since installing Build 482 this evening:

  • AMD VCE no longer appears as an option in any render template
  • GPU processing option says: Optimal-Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (Ellesmere) ???
  • The Magix render templates show only MainConcept rendering mode
  • Rendering has gone down to 48fps from 80-100fps.
  • Rendering seems to be only using CPU (no GPU load shown on render tote)

See screenshots below.

Yes, I have:

  • The latest AMD video card drivers.
  • Tried allowing legacy GPU option and it makes no difference either way.
  • Tried the Ctrl-Shift startup - makes no difference.

This is unusable - looks like I urgently need to reinstall the previous Build - but where do I get it?

Thanks - I will reinstall and check all is still well, then await news on 482 AMD compatibility!

Optimal-Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (Ellesmere) sounds right for this generation GPU link

Minimum specs for Vegas is AMD/ATI® Radeon with 4GB and VCE 3.0 or higher (Radeon Pro series with 8GB for HDR and 32 bit projects)

This should be adequate as it is Video Compression Engine: 3.4 and has 8GB of ram.

When you did control-shift on startup did it prompt you to clear the cache? Did you check that box and clear it? If not, please try the reset again.

Disable legacy GPU support and make sure the file i/o tab has legacy AVC decoding unchecked. I'd reduce dynamic ram preview to 200MB before renders.

Dell XPS 15 laptop (2017) 32GB ram, NVIDIA 1050 (4GB) with latest studio driver, Intel i7-7700HQ with Intel 630 iGPU (latest available driver), dual internal SSD (1TB; 1TB), Windows 10 64 bit

Hi Roger - many thanks for that.

I did not see a prompt to clear the cache when I tried the reset before, so have just done it again (maybe I held the control-shift keys down a litlle longer this time), and I was prompted and did clear the cache.

As a result, I have got AMD VCE options back again - phew!

I notice dynamic RAM preview has reverted to 200MB as a result of the reset. I have 32GB on the PC, and had set it to 4GB, but maybe that's not necessary now that I have the 8GB video card - would that be doing all the heavy lifting instead of the CPU? I don't use complex transitions, so maybe it doesn't matter anyway.

Still a little surprised that the render tote does not indicate GPU usage as well as CPU usage.

These are the options panel and render tote now - going a bit quicker (56fps), so I'll retain the latest build.

ProRes support is super fast, it decodes way faster than I remember Magix Intermediate doing, I'm getting real time in 4k without any stutters.

@fr0sty

Can you check if the new Apple Prores support handles clip SOURCE TIMECODE? (I don't have access to V18 to test) Thanks!

Hi Alan, I did the same thing before- I thought it reset but actually the cache prompt hadn't come up, so in fact I had not held long enough to actually reset Vegas. Great news!

You want to keep dynamic ram preview at 200MB unless there is a reason to increase it (do you highlight a section on the timeline and press shift + b to create a dynamic ram preview? If not, you aren't really using it). At least with NVIDIA, it can seriously interfere with renders and needs to be set to 0 if it is causing glitching or out of memory errors.

All of the settings you shared look good to me. What render template are you using? Is it a VCE one? If not you won't see GPU usage. You can watch what the GPU is doing in Windows task manager/performance.

I see my render options. Yesterday I did a test render and it worked fine. Today I try to render a clip of 4k video in reverse and Vegas locked up. I tried several times with the same results. It will render 19% of the clip and then crash. Any ideas?

David-Jodon wrote on 3/18/2021, 1:33 PM

When playing video my screen turned red or black. Vegas plays a few frames and then the screen turns black or bright red. I want my old version back. Is there somewhere I can get the old version again?

fr0sty wrote on 3/18/2021, 1:39 PM

Red screen means it's having a problem with your GPU. See if a driver update using the driver tool in the VEGAS help menu helps your problem.

If this fails to fix the problem, please share the clip you are trying to render that is locking up, so we can try to reproduce the error. If we can repro it, the team can figure out how to fix it.

There are links for the older versions, I don't know exactly where, though, search the forums. Mean time, let's try to get this one working for you. Please make a new thread about it if you still have issues so we can try to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks Frosty. I will try that & let you know.

David-Jodon wrote on 3/18/2021, 2:31 PM

Vegas 18 Build 482 installed. Video plays on the timeline for about 2 or 3 seconds before I get a red screen. Frosty suggested I check for driver updates using Vegas help/check for driver updates. I did and a new Nvidia driver was found and installed. The problem remains.

This started when I was rendering a clip in reverse at 2x speed and Vegas would crash, but yesterday I was creating a multi-track edit for 3 synchronized cameras and ran into a similar problem. The screen would turn black (instead of red).

So now I load the program and try simply playing back on the timeline. I get a red screen after about 3 seconds of playback on any part of my timeline (I do weddings and long versions are usually about 90 minutes..

The clip I am working on can be downloaded here: https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/a/#/s/A13E6195EFBA4E70B520490B13DFF915Y

I tried loading this clip in a new Vegas project with this being the only clip. It loads and plays fine forward (normal playback) I right-click the clip & select "reverse" and (immediately) the monitor screen goes black and at the same time Vegas crashes.

Please help.

That clip has no audio and it is pretty heavy so maybe it is better to use a proxyfile.
On my laptop from signature it plays without problems but not fluently.

@David-Jodon I reported the same issue on this page. It only happens for me with the high data rate 4k dci clips. My other clips play ok.

The black screen occurs when proxies are not being played. The red screen occurs when the proxies are being played.

A common fix for this is adding VP into the Nvidia Control Panel, may work for you, didn’t help me.

I found VP16 plays the files aok.

@David-Jodan

I have no problems with the clip David, forward or reverse. Great shot, really clear. What camera, drone in use? Ok I see it's a DJI, which model?

I rendered out to FHD in reverse, using Nvenc, 29 seconds. All tested on my laptop, see my signature.

Build 482 just blew away my GPU render engine. I can go to Options/ Preferences/ Video and select Nvidia Corporation (GeForce RTX 2070 Super) as my render engine, BUT when I go to render the only Option I have is either Intel QSV or Mainconcept AVC.

BeanFarmGaming wrote on 3/18/2021, 4:08 PM

-Same as above post. When rendering using build 482 - the option for NVIDIA rendering seems to have disappeared. Only option is to CPU render which is running at a time of 2:26:46 for a 7 minute clip. 😱

j-v wrote on 3/18/2021, 4:12 PM

That is not the option for rendering with Nvidia.
This option helps only the preview of some effects.
For rendering you have to download the latest Studio drivers for a Nvidia GPU by downloading that driver trough the menu Help/Check for Driver Update

Itis no longer just this clip. It's timeline playback with any video.

GPU is also using over 8600 mb of ram. It (my GPU) used to use about 4600 mb for the same clip.

Thanks for sharing the clip, we'll see if we can find a way to reproduce it, if anyone else can make this problem happen, it'll help isolate the cause. Here's where you can download older builds.

Hi Roger - my fault - should have shown the render options (see pic below)

Since getting my WX5100, I have always selected the AMD VCE encoding mode.

From the help file, I think the render tote only displays CPU load, so I was looking for something that didn't exist.

Just for completeness, here are the Task Manager - Performance screens for GPU and CPU while idling in Vegas and while rendering. Surprised that such a low percentage of the GPU core and memory are being used.

IDLE RENDER

I'll call it quits now - need to get on with life :-) Thanks again, Roger!
