Vegas Pro 21 build 315 unresponsive, white glitching menus & unusable

Allise wrote on 1/12/2025, 9:08 AM

Vegas Pro 21 that I just bought from Humble Bundle has some issues. The drop down menus are glitching and flashing white, they sometimes do not open.

The video feed is laggy and moving a region takes forever. Rendering a 50 MB clip can take 15 minutes.

Done so far:
- Reinstalled Vegas

- Resetted all settings

- Watched some optimization videos on YouTube

- Tried with different number of videos in timeline/no videos

- Updated GPU drivers

- Closed all applications that I think can affect Vegas in Task manager

64GB RAM, RTX 3080, 5950x so the hardware is fine... running Windows 11 Pro.

When you reset Vegas, how did you do it? I have VP21 installed and have never had that particular issue. Did you reset according to THIS procedure?

This is very puzzling.

Are there any Fx applied to the project anywhere (media or track level)? The video makes the project just look like 1 video with audio and no Fx- is that the case?

Is there anything noteworthy about the media in use? Can you share MediaInfo for it?

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Have you ever used VEGAS in the past and did an older version have similar issues?

VEGASDerek wrote on 1/17/2025, 12:43 PM

I saw this post already on Reddit and responded there. This issue in not a GPU issue...but it appears to be a GDI resource leak in the VEGAS code. It is puzzling because we never saw any issues like this reported back when VEGAS Pro 21 was still actively being updated. What else is puzzling is the fact that the project displayed in the screen capture does not appear to be very complicated to the point that is resource leak would seem pretty rare.

Could you elaborate on the things you are doing prior to the UI going "bad"?

Absolutely nothing. The UI goes bad without any video files in the software at all. Right after startup it acts like this.

I have used Vegas prior, both 16 and 18. 21 worked fine for a year until it randomly started to behave like this.

It acts like this without any media. But the media isn’t special, avchd h264 50 mbit 50p

No FX.

I used that procedure. I also uninstalled Vegas and removed any folder named ”Vegas” I could find when resetting didn’t work.

Windows 11 Pro v. 24H2

I am still on 23H2 Win11 Pro with latest updates and see no issues. I know that doesn't help, so maybe a 24H2 problem?

So I tried installing Vegas on another computer... it works fine. But now there's no audio.

The audio track is visible, but no audio waveforms or audio output..

Dolby AC-3 on mts container.

Dexcon wrote on 1/24/2025, 3:48 AM

Others on the forum have advised of problems with media containing Dolby AC-3 audio, and the cause seems to be that many programs including Vegas Pro no longer include the Dolby codec due to licensing issues and relied on the Dolby AC-3 codec in the OS.but from Windows 24H2 the Dolby AC-3 codec is no longer included in the OS- please see https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/missing-audio-in-m2ts-vegas-22--147988/#ca930716 and https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/no-audio-and-no-rendering-possible-with-m2ts-files-in-win11-24h2--147963/#ca930579.

A workaround is to transcode the audio to another codec useable in Vegas Pro (i.e. AIFF, AAC, MP2, MP3, M4A, OGG Vorbis, WAV, WMA, FLAC) in a free transcoder such as Shutter Encoder or HandBrake.

I installed AC3 codec from somewhere linked on this forum.

But to no avail.

What worked tho, was installing Vegas Pro 21 on yet another PC, now it works.

It just took three different PCs to get it working... really... frustrating...

Just as a matter of interest, was the successful computer installed with Windows 10 or Windows 11 pre-build 24H2 (e.g. build 23H2)? This info might be helpful for others with a similar Dolby AC-3 problem.

ASUS NUC 13 Pro Barebone i5 1340P bought in august 2024, Windows 11 Pro 23H2 is installed, I won't be updating that one to 24H2... that's for sure.

Is that the issue that 24H2 clean installs lack the Windows Dolby decoder?

@Allise You won't lose AC3 if you update your 23H2 to 24H2 but you will lose it if you do a fresh install of 24H2.

I figured. My laptop came with 24H2, so that's probably why the Audio didn't work.

I still haven't got my original issue solved. The software still does not work on my main computer.

Yes, the MS item explains

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/codecs-in-media-player-d5c2cdcd-83a2-4805-abb0-c6888138e456

Dexcon wrote on 1/24/2025, 5:33 AM

Thank you @EricLNZ for that MS find / link ... that explains the situation perfectly.

Perhaps this could be added to https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-faqs-and-troubleshooting-guides--104787/ for future reference for Mods and some of us forum long termers because chances are the issue is going to arise again as more new computer purchases are likely going to be fresh W11 24H2 builds and then later W12 which probably won't have the Dolby codec if 24H2 is anything to go by.

@Dexcon That link was in one of the other threads on the AC3 problem.

In this thread https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/no-audio-and-no-rendering-possible-with-m2ts-files-in-win11-24h2--147963/ VEGASDerek stated "We are working on a solution to this and hope to have an option for AC-3 decoding in place in an update soon. Many other commercial NLEs are having to deal with this same problem now." So hopefully Vegas will have a fix for the problem.
